On my "to suggest" list is a pile of Post-Rock bands. Not everyone's cup of tea, but there are some REALLY nice ones.
Almost forgot - KOSTAREV GROUP, symphonic fusion, pretty interesting...I'll make a proposition with links soon Another proposition - ESTHETIC EDUCATION. Not that much Porg, just an unconventional band for mainstream rock. Deeply inspired by DOORS and modern New Prog a-la DREDG, but not that dark Here's a link on ESTHETICs LastFM page. There you can experience their best tracks - catchy "Beautiful" (the first I heard from them and immediately fell in love with a band), complex "War"(3-parts mini-epic), mainstreamy "Machine" (yes, kinda disco song, but enjoyable as hell ) and romantic "Love" Edited by Prog-jester - May 15 2007 at 15:37 |

A new band on PA horizon...led by Russian prog-veteran Alexander Kostarev (plays Prog since 1978!!!), KOSTAREV GROUP plays high-class instrumental fusion both with symphonic and avant influences. Let the music speak - guys have their albums free to download via their site.
Live @ InProg (2003) Works 78-06 (begins with Eddie Jobson's cover) Oddly enough, they have no studio album yet - only live album from Moscow InProg fest recorded in 2003 and a compilation of different miscellaneous records. Recommended!!! Enjoy! |

I'd forgotten that I have them on the shelf, but thanks to this thread, I'll have to give them a spin today. They really throw the listener a curve with that little opening of chamber music. This is a great thread, guys! So many bands that are unknown in the West.

I listened to part of the album today, but remembered what is was that I didn't care for. They lean toward the acid side of fusion and it's just a bit harsh for my taste, though they are talented.

Apple Pie. Has anyone mentioned Apple Pie? I've not listened to more than a few seconds, but I'd received an email from a friend today recommending them. They're on the MALS label, out of Moscow. (also on MALS is Jeremy & Progressor's "Pearl of Great Price" and 33 [Gruppa 33 - Group 33]) Here's the link for some Apple Pie samples:

Eto shutko. We have a saying in the US, "as American as apple pie." or were you speaking of the music? Edited by artguyken - May 27 2007 at 11:37 |

"Eto shutka" means "It's a joke" in Russian
and Apple Pie has nothing Russian and nothing unique in their music, sadly...

The guy who recommended them to me said: My friend Dan and his friend Denny both bought copies of their debut album "Crossroad" from Greg Walker's booth at ROSfest last month, apparently there's a buzz going about it. Denny played some for us in his rental car, and it was very impressive, so I then went to all the vendors there to find one for myself, but all had sold out, or hadn't gotten it yet. It's VERY Spock's Beard like, though not entirely, and very melodic. Edited by artguyken - May 27 2007 at 16:41 |

I just found a video posted online of Fromuz at Baja Prog. The sound is pretty horrible, but all the same, it gives a little taste: http://www.vimeo.com/clip:193870/context/tag:music

Yes, it's somewhat SPOCKS BEARD like ...
Well - it's a matter of taste of course. Apple Pies Crossroad is nothing exciting for me. Check it out and maybe you'll have another opinion like other reviewers here. There are russian bands which are more interesting for me - The Gourishankar - Disen Gage - Infront - Autograph |
