They way drums sound affects the music... They are very diverse, just like any instrument's sound... I want to dedicate this thread for appreciation of your favorite drummer(s) sound (rather than technical ability and such...) in specific albums or songs...
Here's a a short list of mine, if the thread catches on i'll give more:

Bill Bruford - We all know and love him but I think he sound is at it's best in the album Red, speciically One More Red Nightmare... His drums sound so amazing, ofcourse the musicianship is perfect, but Bruford's musicianship is always exceptional... But the sound is simply Godly on this track... Just so, so beautiful... I could just cry... Really...

Andy Ward - Is one of the coolest drummer... You gotta admit it, If you get a chance to see him drumming from Camel in the 70s... He is so cool with those long arms and legs, funny body language and those sunglasses... besides I love the way it seems he does all those technical stuff with great ease, he dosen't seem like someone that practiced technique all day, he has so much soul... I think his sound is at its best in Rhayader and Rhayader Goes to Town... Again, it's just such beautiful drumming.... Love it!

Carl Palmer - Completly amazing drummer, no need to talk so much... I love his sound on Tarkus. So Inventive, So artistic... and most relevant for this thread because the sound is just great...

The opening of 'When The Levee Breaks' has an amazing drum sound. Indeed all of Bonham's drum sounds on Led Zep IV are fantastic.

'One more Red Nightmare' is an excellent choice. The drumming and drum sound on that track is fantastic.

Bonham of course, all the time!

Phil Collins has one my favourite drum sounds and playing styles. I love the sound on Trick of Tail, and Duke more than any other Gensis album, but the combined sound of Collins and Chester Thompson on Seconds Out is mindblowing, especially on Firth of Fifth. He's playing alongside Bruford on Cinema Show and that also sounds brilliant.

Neil Peart sounds superb on Moving Pictures too.

Gavin Harrison on "The Sound Of Muzak" is pretty awesome. I love how he uses the cymbals. He doesn't punish and beat the crap out of them, and when he does that soft double hit of the cymbals it sends shivers down my spin.

I've also loved Fudge Smith's work on "As Good As Gold"--especially during the '...world on it's own' section.

I've always loved the drumming by both Manu Katché and Jerry Marotta on Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" during the chorus sections. Adds a soft but turbulent feeling to an otherwise beautiful song.

Phil Collins on "One For The Vine" was always a favorite of mine from the older Genesis material; however, nobody can deny the intensity from "In The Air Tonight". I absolutely love how there's no percussion (except for the drum machine) throughout, until the fury of Collins on that unforgettable section. For a bit of whimsy, I also like his drumming on "Thunder and Lightning". Especially his hi-hat work.

I could go on and on about Peart, but I've always loved "Subdivisions." Especially during the opening section where he's playing the ride and the hi-hat at the same time.

I've always enjoyed "The Camera Eye", too. Maybe not Peart's flashiest, but shows some odd time signatures on the ride at times.

Lastly, one of my favorites is Paul Wertico from Pat Metheny's Group. Very subtle style and he doesn't blaze all over the kit; but, the guy has such a nice touch. Antonio Sanchez is a great replacement, but I do miss Wertico. One of my favorites is "First Circle". Absolutely brilliant drumming throughout.

Phil Collins, great effect on "Squonk".

Alan White, the same, on "Release, release".

And now that Split Enz are on the archives: I like the drum sound on "Log Cabin Fever" a lot (album: Time and Tide)

For some reason, I really like the sound of the snare drum in Änglagård's ''Jordrök''. Sounds so crisp.

Yes, very definitely.  He won an award from a Percussionist's association for his inventive drum work on the title song, Aja.  Does some amazing drumming on Al DiMeola's Casino album too.

Have to agree also with everyone who mentioned Phil Collins, Bill Bruford, Carl Palmer, and Neil Peart.  Also Chester Thompson.  Not yet mentioned is Terry Bozzio, most recently with Black Light Syndrome.  With the kit to match, that man is a drummer's drummer (in my humble drummer opinion, anyway...)

I like it when Peart plays on his very small/high/tightly-tuned timbale/tom drums.  Not exactly sure what they are, but the sound is awesome, especially on YYZ (live) from Exit...stage left.

Pearl`s kit on moving pictures YYZ I thought sounded fantastic tuning and production wise as others have already said but I am going to go for another drummer Mr BarrieMore Barlow on Jethro Tull"s  bursting out  con on drum  Clap  bravo bravo   and a nod goes to Bil Bruford on Starless  Clap  bravo   and my young achiever award is given to Mr Mike Portnoy on Metropolis Clap bravo   ... all use the brilliant sounding kits to perfection and the recording standards are faithful to the artist.

When we measure the audio performance of a drum sound we must remember the date it was recorded. Recordings have come a long way so I tend to base my judgment on that period in which I`m listing to that particular artist,  if you catch my drift Wink

Danney Carey on Lateralus.  The cymbals are so nice and crispy and the drums so clear and delicious.
