 Topic: The Crimson Idol

I'm probably gonna get killed for this....
But this topic is about an 80's hair metal band: W.A.S.P.
well granted they're not prog but they have one amazing concept album; which is the crimson idol... & actually this album has more prog elements than some of the bands listed here.
i think that this album is well written, well performed & excellently produced....
1- What do you ppl think about this particular album? (if you've not heard it yet it's highly recommended  ).
2- What other non-prog concept albums that you like?

Sounds fascinating! I'm not particularly fond of metal, but when I was in the Belgian army (as I had to be!) in the 1980s, one of my roommates (then a sixteen-year old) was crazy about W.A.S.P., Venom, early Metallica and... Jethro Tull. (He himself was a first rate metal guitar player.) In other words, your description of THE CRIMSON IDEAL doesn't surprise me. And maybe it does belong on Prog Archives.

I also love Sabbat's "Dreamweaver", and most of the King Diamond concept albums.

Not sure if I'd like it as much now, but I used to have this one a few years ago and it wasn't bad at all- certainly far removed from rubbish like 'Animal'. They have recorded a few concept albums over the years, AFAIK.

yea they have one more concept album; "the neon god"
well the thing with W.A.S.P. is that they can't seem to be able to decide between being a serious band or circus act...
but regardless of their other crappy productions... i think the crimson idol is a brilliant effort that deserves a better recognition  |

 true... true... He's got an awesome voice though not to mention a great lyricist

I have the album that was released before it - The Headless Children, which has some good stuff on it. Chris Holmes and Blackie Lawless worked quite well together, and Johnny Rod too. The Crimson Idol I had on tape. Yes, it was a concept album, and not a bad one at that. Well done for mentioning it. Funny to think Lawless was once a member of The New York Dolls!
By the way, for those who don't know, the name W.A.S.P actually stands for:
We Are Sexual Perverts. Not very edifying, is it?

I thought The Headless Children was a concept album too, thinking back it probably wasn't...I remember Ken Hensley of Uriah Heep played on it too.

i agree with you 100% regarding the 80s but you can really find some pretty good stuff in there...
& you have to check out the crimson idol (released in 92)...
& i would recommend listening to the song "the idol" just to encourage you or give you an idea about the whole album...

The Crimson Idol is one of my favourite albums; IMHO it's WASP's best work.
I also agree with King Diamond's concept albums, they're great indeed. ( Abigail, Them and Conspiracy are my favourite)
"Tommy" - The Who is one of my favourite albums as well.
I can't think or mention (M)any non-prog concept albums for now, at least.  |
