I start this month's additions with a couple of new DVDs. Here is the first one:

EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER ~ LIVE AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL
SANCTUARY 0351 (Barcode: 5050749503510) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1992 Released: 2007
The Emerson, Lake & Palmer reunions have been quite a regular event since the group broke up originally in 1979 (or perhaps they never did?), meeting with various degrees of success. The first reunion (in 1991) resulted in recording of the "Black Moon" album and a tour. They were all in top form, as can be witnessed by this concert at London's famous Royal Albert Hall. The concert includes just a couple of tracks from the a.m. new album and most of the material is a selection of their previous material, which is what the crowd was really looking for. Slightly rearranged, classic ELP (and a bit of Nice) material sounds as good as ever and any ELP fan will surely find this DVD a pleasure to watch. Emerson (as usual) performs some of his stage theatrics, which are always fun to watch and Palmer's virtuoso drumming is a revelation. This is classic Prog stuff and perhaps the best live ELP material available on film. 88 minutes.

Here is the next new DVD, added today:

CLARKE, STANLEY ~ NIGHT SCHOOL
HEADS UP 7118 (Barcode: 053361711894) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 2002 Released: 2007
It's no secret that Stanley Clarke is one of my favorite bass players ever. His amazing sensitivity, complete control of both the acoustic and electric versions of the instrument and his innovative approach to music are his trademarks for the last 40 years, rivaled only by Jaco Pastorius, whom he preceded as one of the forefathers of Fusion, when he was a member of Chick Corea's Return To Forever. Unfortunately Clarke's recorded legacy as a leader is not really reflective of his true abilities and he has been largely absent from the scene in the last two decades. Therefore having a new document of his amazing talents handy is a joyous occasion. The concert presented here documents Clarke leading a group of over 30 musicians (a list of which reads like a who's who of jazz and Fusion) in various formations, from solo performances to quartets, quintets and a big band, all fronted by Clarke himself. The concert culminates with a band, including no less than eleven bass players (all taking a solo in turn), jamming over Clarke's "School Days". This "bass orgy" is one of the most incredible performances I've ever watched / listened to and the entire DVD is an absolute must to any serious Fusion fan anywhere on this planet. The DVD also includes bonus material and interviews. Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, 120 minutes.

Today's addition is the last Al Di Meola Telarc release missing on my site (except his Christmas album, which I'll leave out):

DI MEOLA, AL ~ THE GRANDE PASSION
TELARC 83481 (Barcode: 089408348129) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion
Recorded: 2000 Released: 2000
This magnificent album by Al Di Meola was his 3rd release on the prestigious Telarc label. It is certainly one of the highest achievements in his illustrious musical career and a masterpiece of rare beauty. Accompanied by his World Sinfonia group and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Di Meola presents a beautiful suite, which mixes jazz, fusion, Latin, Tango, Middle-Eastern and classical influences together, creating a whole new genre by itself. The music was mostly composed by Di Meola, but he includes three compositions by his Mentor Astor Piazzolla as part of his uninterrupted (since the early 1990s) commitment to pay tribute to his music. The orchestral arrangements are one of the most organic and suitable attempts to combine classical orchestra with a jazz ensemble ever attempted. In short the album is an one hour long uninterrupted musical ecstasy, which should leave nobody cold. This music is beyond genres and is truly suitable for any music lover on this planet. Essential!

Today's addition is the new fantastic album by the Japanese prodigy Hiromi Uehara:

UEHARA, HIROMI ~ TIME CONTROL
TELARC 83655 (Barcode: 089408365522) ~ JAPAN ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007
4th album by Japanese keyboards player Hiromi Uehara firmly establishes her position as one of the brightest stars of contemporary jazz. Her amazing compositions and breathtaking virtuosity are constant factors present on all of hers albums so far, which of course makes it really easy to decide if one should get anything she puts her name to. Although deeply rooted in jazz, on this album Hiromi takes a step towards Fusion by expanding her regular trio into a quartet with the addition of superb guitarist David Fiuczynski. Being a strong soloist, Fiuczynski adds another dimension to the music and the fiery exchanges between his guitar and Hiromi's keyboards bring back fond memories of similar exchanges between Chick Corea and Al Di Meola in Return To Forever. But there is plenty of Hiromi playing the acoustic piano here to satisfy the more jazz oriented folks as well, so whichever way you look at this album it's a gem. Anybody who already owns the previous Hiromi's album will get this for sure but I urge people who are not familiar with her art to try her out - most of the people who listened to my (wholehearted) recommendations got hooked helplessly. Brilliant!

As promised, I'm working very hard on turning the Jazzis Web Shop database into a musical encyclopedia by cross-referencing all the albums between each other (using links and keywords). This is a gargantuan task, but some results are already showing. If you're interested, just click on the "Artist Of The Month - Al Di Meola" link on the Home Page and follow any of the hundreds of links available on Al's album descriptions. Another possibility is to follow the link above and take it from there. This is all quite amazing, so enjoy!

Today's addition is the new edition of a Folk-Rock classic album with a surprising new treatment:

TREES ~ ON THE SHORE (EXPANDED EDITION)
SONY BMG 705765 (Barcode: 886970576529) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock
Recorded: 1970 Released: 2007
2nd and final album by UK Folk-Rock group Trees. Although Trees existed for just a brief period of time - formed in 1969 and disbanded in early 1972 - they managed to release two seminal albums, which are considered classics of the genre. Trees had some similarities with other contemporary Folk-Rock ensembles (Pentangle, Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, etc.): they were fronted by an exceptional female vocalist (Celia Humphris) and they played arrangements of traditional British folk tunes in addition to their self-penned material. But there were also important differences, which made them unique: they were strongly influenced by the Psychedelic movement and they used a strong lead electric guitar (Barry Clarke) rather than acoustic instruments. In retrospect both of their albums kept formidably the original magic over the years and are worthy of a special place in any serious Folk-Rock album collection. The bonus disc added to this beautiful edition is also quite unique and interesting: Following a sampling of one of the album's songs by a contemporary pop group in 2006, the album returned to public attention with a bang. The original group members decided to remix most of the original album, adding (mostly) keyboards (Bias Boshell) and some guitar to bring the album up to contemporary sound. The result is quite brilliant and surprising. Although touching original material can be considered sacrilegious, in this case it works wonderfully. An early demo track and a BBC recording are also added. Definitely a treasure!

Today's addition is the newly reissued Hugh Hopper extremely rare 2nd album:

HOPPER, HUGH ~ HOPPER TRINITY BOX
CUNEIFORM 240 (Barcode: 045775024028) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1976 Released: 2007
2nd album by Hugh Hopper (and the first release after he left Soft Machine), released originally on the tiny Norwegian Compendium label (same label that originally released Henry Cow's Concerts and other weird but wonderful music). Musically the album belongs very strongly to the Soft Machine experimental Jazz-Rock of the Third, Fourth, Five & Six period (when Hopper was still a member of the group). Hopper enlisted eight great musicians (Mark Charig, Elton Dean, Dave Stewart, Gary Windo and others), all members of the flourishing Canterbury scene and UK Jazz circles (members in groups like Brotherhood Of Breath, Gilgamesh, Hatfield And The North, Isotope, Keith Tippett Sextet, etc), who make up the duos, trios, quartets and quintets that play on this album. He wrote all the music, except one track, which was composed by Ornette Coleman. This album is considered Hopper's most consistent release ever and sounds as fresh today as when it was first recorded. For all Canterbury scene and SM fans this is an absolute must and it's a great joy to see this album available again. Brilliant stuff!

Today's addition is a fantastic new album by British Jazz Giant Graham Collier:

COLLIER, GRAHAM ~ HOARDED DREAMS
CUNEIFORM 252 (Barcode: 045775025223) ~ UK ~ Jazz
Recorded: 1983 Released: 2007
This extraordinary album contains a previously unreleased recording of Graham Collier's Big Band performance of his suite "Hoarded Dreams". The music was commissioned by the Arts Council of Great Britain (UK Government body that over the years faithfully supported UK Jazz scene and provided endless opportunities for UK musicians to compose and record) for the 1983 edition of the Bracknell Jazz Festival. For the occasion Collier assembled a spectacular Big Band (including 19 musicians), which he conducted. The players are a multi-national creme de la creme of European Jazz, with such distinguished names as Tomasz Stanko (Poland), Juhani Aaltonen (Finland), John Surman, Kenny Wheeler (UK), Manfred Schoof (Germany), etc. This awesome personnel ensures that the performance is truly stellar, with soaring solos and endless display of virtuosity and collective interplay. The brilliant music, suiting elegantly and perfectly the purpose of providing solo space for such a broad group of instrumentalist proves again that Collier is undoubtedly one of the true Giants composers of Modern Jazz of the caliber of Charles Mingus. Absolutely stunning!

Today's addition is the last missing album on my site by the fantastic Polish Prog band Quidam:

QUIDAM ~ SURREVIVAL
ROCK SERWIS 063 (Barcode: 5907729906321) ~ POLAND ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2005 Released: 2005
5th album by the phenomenal Polish Prog group Quidam. It took them 3 years to recover from the sudden blow inflicted on them when their lead singer / lyricist Emila Derkowska unexpectedly left them. Since Quidam were essentially built around Emila's central role, this entire concept was now gone and the remaining core band members had to redesign and rethink their new direction. Slowly they developed new material and after enlisting a new (male this time) lead singer and lyricist Bartek Kossowicz they were finally ready to record a new album. As the album's title reveals, they eventually managed both to survive and to revive their group. But the new Quidam, which emerges here, is very different from the previous incarnation. The sound is much harder, similar at times to Steve Hogarth's era Marillion and Arena. The early soft Genesis influences and folksy instrumentation is gone, replaced by strong guitar and keyboards lines. The only resemblance remains in the beautiful flute parts. The new singer is truly excellent, singing only in English with no foreign accent whatsoever. This switch from Polish to English is one more difference in the band's approach, surely influenced by their worldwide success. One thing is quite obvious: with all the changes and transformations they remain to be one of the best and strongest contemporary Prog bands, with very limited competition. The album includes excellent music from start to finish, brilliantly played and sung - one can ask nothing more than that. Definitely a worthy addition to the band's excellent musical legacy and a must for every serious Symphonic Prog fan.

Today's addition is the first of a series of new South American arrivals. Chile and Brazil seem to have an endless supply of superb music these days and I'm always happy to include these on my site:

ERGO SUM ~ ERGO SUM
ROCK SYMPHONY 042 (Barcode: 7898217280420) ~ CHILE ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1997 Released: 2001
1st album by the great Chilean Prog group Ergo Sum. On this album the band continues the legacy of the so-called first generation of South American Prog, modeled after European groups of the early 1970s (mostly UK and Italian ones). At first the group sounds very much like an instrumental version of Jethro Tull or the Hungarian group Solaris, mostly due to the fact that the flute is the leading solo instrument. The folksy JT approach is also present, changing only when the heavy lead guitar licks take the stage occasionally. The music is excellent all the way with constantly changing rhythmic patterns and imaginative melodies. Both main soloists (flute and guitar) play some blistering solos and the rhythm section provides an excellent backing. The percussion player adds some nice touches using exotic percussion instruments. All in all an excellent Prog album, perhaps not very innovative (their next release will be much more daring), but perfect in every sense. Considering how good this stuff is, it's not wonder that the second generation of Chilean Prog bands (Tryo, Akinetón Retard) were to conquer the top of the Prog scene. This is a reissue of the original LP, with 2 added tracks recorded especially for this CD edition. Highly recommended!

Today's addition is the second album by the Chilean Prog Masters Ergo Sum:

ERGO SUM ~ MIXOLIDIO
ROCK SYMPHONY 045 (Barcode: 7898217280451) ~ CHILE ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1999 - 2001 Released: 2001
2nd album by the great Chilean Prog group Ergo Sum. Following their excellent eponymous debut album, the band went through a personnel change (a new bassist and drummer) with the original drummer switching to vibraphone, which enhanced their sound considerably. The also updated their musical approach considerably, switching from symphonic Prog to a much more ambitious material, jazzier and more improvised them before. Late King Crimson and Scandinavian groups like Anglagard could serve as reference points, but the music is quite unique and original. The album consists of several studio tracks and a long suite called "Trilogia" performed live. This is a very strong album in every respect, which puts the group in the same category with other excellent Chilean groups like Tryo and Akinetón Retard. This is a reissue of the original LP, with 2 added tracks recorded especially for this CD edition. Wholeheartedly recommended!

Today's addition is a fantastic album by the Brazilian group Armazém Abaporu:

ARMAZÉM ABAPORU ~ PEDRA GRANDE
EDITIO PRINCEPS 11 (Barcode: 7898901556114) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-World Fusion
Recorded: 2001 - 2005 Released: 2007
1st album by the excellent Brazilian group Armazém Abaporu, which continues the work of distinguished Brazilian Masters as Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti. Their music is a wonderful amalgam of traditional Brazilian music with Jazz and Prog. All six members of the group are excellent instrumentalists and the compositions are truly outstanding - complex both rhythmically and melodically, yet enormously enjoyable. This is one of the cleverest Jazz and World Music combinations I've ever heard and repeated listening reveals new aspects of the music every time. This new edition includes their debut album recorded in 2001 (and released privately) and live material recorded in France during their 2005 tour. This is essential listening for anybody who wished to expand his or her musical education beyond the trivial and a truly intelligent music.

Today's addition is an excellent jazz album from Chile:

LA PICHANGA ~ ARRIBA DE LA PELOTA
PRIVATE EDITION ~ CHILE ~ Jazz
Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006
La Pichanga are a Chilean trio (sax / bass / drums) playing some amazing modern / free Jazz in the best tradition of Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy. Two of the members (Edén Carrasco - alto sax and Christian Bidárt - drums) are also members in the amazing Akinetón Retard ensemble, Chilean most interesting Prog / RIO act. Although Chilean Prog has been making big waves in the last decade, there is very little output from the local Jazz scene and this is a most welcome release. The trio plays all original compositions by the band members and this live recording allows them to stretch out and play their hearts out. The music is quite fascinating, well based in the highly improvised free jazz tradition but also mixing at times rockier rhythms and ethnic themes. Although complex and demanding, this music should be very appealing to a wide array of listeners between pure jazz buffs to RIO enthusiasts. Highly recommended.

Today's addition is the last of the new arrivals from Chile. Two more Brazilian new arrivals will follow shortly:

OPUS 3 ~ OPUS 3
MYLODON 039 / MUSEA 4676 (Barcode: 3426300046765) ~ CHILE ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006
1st album by Chilean power trio (guitar / bass / drums) Opus 3. They play a highly energetic music, which is very difficult to categorize with traces of Heavy Metal and RIO, all mixed together into a completely unique musical approach. The bass player Francisco de Borja, who seems to be the driving force behind the group, composed all the music. His excellent bass lines provide the vehicle for the manic guitar frontline. This is obviously a kind of music that is supposed to be played loud (to hell with the neighbors) and enjoyed to the max. My first impression was "The Shadows on speed", but of course that only means something to people who know who The Shadows were. Very strong debut and these young musicians might surprise us all again with their next album.

Today's addition is a beautiful new Prog album from Brazil:

SÉRGIO BENCHIMOL ~ A DROP IN THE OCEAN - AN OCEAN IN A DROP
PRIVATE EDITION ~ BRAZIL ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2004 Released: 2004
Once in a blue moon a completely anonymous album drops in my lap, leaving me completely awestruck. This is one of those rare and absolutely wonderful albums that renew my inspiration and my eternal quest for that kind of music. Brazilian multi-instrumentalist and composer Sérgio Benchimol (obviously Jewish with a Jarmulka on his head) presents here a suite of outrageous beauty, which mixes Prog, Jazz, World Music and Classical motifs, fascinating and uplifting from the first note played to the very last. The music is melodic and moves smoothly between one theme to another, with frequent rhythm changes and wonderful instrumental arrangements. Benchimol collected a great cast of musicians to play with him on the album, each and every one contributing their magic to the total result. Anything else I could say is in fact superfluous, as it will never come close to the experience of listening to this masterpiece. Any person with musical sensitivity should find this album a blessing. Absolutely essential!

Today's addition is another classic Prog album from Brazil, which is the last of the new South American additions:

ARAÚJO, MARCO ANTÔNIO ~ INFLUĘNCIAS
SONHOS E SONS 059 (Barcode: 7897999300999) ~ BRAZIL ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1980 Released: 2000
1st album by one of the most important and influential Brazilian Prog Masters - Marco Antônio Araújo. As a classically trained musician, Araújo was able to compose complex musical suites based on the classical tradition and then orchestrate them utilizing rocky instrumentation and rhythmic patterns. His pioneering work in this field makes him one of the forefathers of Brazilian Prog and his well-deserved reputation is legendary. Unfortunately he died untimely in 1986 (he was only 36 years old) after suffering a brain aneurysm, leaving a limited recorded legacy of four albums. Before recording his first solo album he played (guitar) with several Brazilian Rock and Prog groups as well as with a Symphony Orchestra as a violoncellist. He also composed music for cinema, theatre and ballet - a true Renaissance musician. The music on this album is an extended orchestral suite in 8 parts, played by a large orchestra (with brass and strings) and soloist: Araújo on guitar and Eduardo Delgado on flute (the leading solo instrument on this album). This is not easy music, profound and complex with multi-layered textures, but extremely rewarding. Recommended to serious Prog listeners, who also like classical music.

Today's addition is the first item in a series of classic (but lesser known) Jazz albums I planned to add a while ago but somehow never got to it. As the saying goes, better late than never:

ZAWINUL, JOE ~ ZAWINUL
ATLANTIC 81375 (Barcode: 075678137525) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1970 Released: 1994
This sadly overlooked and almost forgotten masterpiece by Joe Zawinul is one of the most pivotal recordings of the emerging Jazz-Rock Fusion movement. Following Zawinul's stint with Miles Davis (with whom he recorded the timeless masterpiece In A Silent Way), he was looking for a new environment to express his unique music vision, which combined his European classical music heritage and the American jazz tradition, spiced by the funky and rock rhythmic patterns. His vision was to be realized soon, when the greatest Fusion group of all times - Weather Report - was formed just weeks after this album was recorded. In fact this album could (or rather should) be considered the first Weather Report album for several reasons: two soon to be Weather Report founding members - Miroslav Vitous (bass) and Wayne Shorter (saxophone) take part in these sessions and the musical direction of the future group is basically all present here already. The main difference is that Zawinul decided to invite his ex-Davis partner Herbie Hancock to play along with him on this album, making it a double keyboards affair. The effect of two exceptional keyboards players soloing in tandem and in parallel creates a magic atmosphere, reminiscent of course of the Davis recordings. Other prominent musicians taking part in these sessions include the great Wood Shaw on trumpet, Walter Booker on bass, Joe Chambers and Billy Hart on drums, etc. All the performances are of course absolutely brilliant, with Vitous contributing some superb bow solos, which compliment the music perfectly. I have no idea why this album is not given its proper importance as a true classic, but in my book this is an absolutely essential piece of music.

Today's addition is the next item in a series of classic (but lesser known) Jazz albums I planned to add a while ago but somehow never got to it. As the saying goes, better late than never:

HANCOCK, HERBIE ~ FAT ALBERT ROTUNDA
WARNER BROS. 47540 (Barcode: 093624754022) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1969 Released: 2001
Herbie Hancock's solo career (apart from his work done with his Mentor Miles Davis, with whom he stayed for over five years as the member of the legendary second quintet) produced an overwhelmingly diverse body of work which positions him as one of the Giants of 20th music. After recording a series of excellent and immensely influential albums on the Blue Note label in the 1960's, Hancock switched to Warner Bros. where he recorded just three albums, this one being the first of these. Recorded shortly after Hancock left the Miles Davis group, it contains music he wrote for a TV series, rearranged for a jazz sextet. The funky approach was Hancock's first attempt to play around with funk (influenced among others by the revolutionary work done with the genre at that time by Sly & Family Stone). This started a love affair that would be extensively developed a few years later after Hancock switched labels again, this time to Columbia. He plays the Fender Rhodes electric piano exclusively leaving the acoustic piano aside for a few years until the formation of the VSOP quintet. The funky arrangements are extremely clever and exquisitely performed by the sextet, which includes Joe Henderson on flute and sax, Johnny Coles on trumpet, Garnet Brown on trombone, Buster Williams on bass and Albert Heath on drums. The music sounds beautifully fresh and vibrant today, loosing nothing of its original charm and magic. A timeless classic!

Today's addition is the next item in a series of classic (but lesser known) Jazz and Fusion albums I planned to add a while ago but somehow never got to it. As the saying goes, better late than never:

HANCOCK, HERBIE ~ MWANDISHI
WARNER BROS. 47541 (Barcode: 093624754121) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1971 Released: 2001
Following his departure from the Miles Davis quintet, Herbie Hancock established his own sextet, which would serve as his musical vehicle in the next step of his explorations. The sextet included Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Benny Maupin on bass clarinet and flute, Julian Priester on trombone, Buster Williams on bass and Billy Hart on drums. Hancock recorded three revolutionary and visionary albums with this group, before changing his chameleon-like path again, this time into funk. These three albums were Mwandishi and Crossings released on Warner Bros. and his Columbia debut Sextant. The extraordinary music present on these albums is the next step in the future of Jazz, the creation of a multi-genre Fusion, which "genetically spliced" Jazz with Rock, Funk and World Music, creating a new musical universe. In fact one should see these recordings in the right perspective, comparing it to the music Miles Davis was creating (from Bitches Brew onward) and his disciples: John McLaughlin with Mahavishnu Orchestra, Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter with Weather Report and Herbie Hancock with his sextet. All this music (created roughly at the same time) falls beautifully into place supplementing the big picture. Of course one should always credit it as much to its wonderfully talented creators as to their Mentor Miles Davis. The music on Mwandishi is beautifully atmospheric. The unusually (for Jazz) long tracks (one over 21 minutes and the two others over 10 minutes long) leave plenty of space for group improvisation and generous solo space for all the musicians. Hancock sticks to the electric piano, by now mastering the instrument to perfection. He composed two of the tracks and Priester the remaining one. A few guest musicians, including Santana's percussionist Jose Areas and drummer Leon Chancler contribute their input. This music can be heard time after time, revealing new emotions and hidden treasures every time. An essential classic!

HANCOCK, HERBIE ~ CROSSINGS
WARNER BROS. 47542 (Barcode: 093624754220) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1972 Released: 2001
Crossings was Herbie Hancock's last album for Warner Bros. and the 2nd part of his sextet album trilogy, which started with Mwandishi and continued with Sextant after Hancock switched labels to Columbia. The sextet's lineup (Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Benny Maupin on bass clarinet and flute, Julian Priester on trombone, Buster Williams on bass and Billy Hart on drums) remained steady for all three albums, which of course contributed to the phenomenal level of interplay they were able to achieve. Musically the album continues the path set by its predecessor, with long (this time the longest track is almost 25 minutes long) atmospheric compositions which allow a lot of space for collective and individual improvisations. Hancock composed the central piece and Maupin the two additional tunes. Hancock, who was always extremely aware of the latest developments on the music scene as well as open-minded, invited the electronic music pioneer Patrick Gleason to play the Moog synthesizer on this album, which added a new dimension to the music, which sounds even more contemplative and spiritual. The resulting sound vistas are truly amazing. This is visionary music in every respect, touching the listener on every plane of awareness - esthetic, emotional and intellectual. Another essential classic!

Today's addition is the first item in a series of classic (but lesser known) Prog albums I planned to add a while ago but somehow never got to it. As the saying goes, better late than never:

AKKERMAN, JAN / LUX, KAZ ~ ELI
WEA 242361 (Barcode: 022924236129) ~ NETHERLANDS ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1976 Released: 2000
4th album by the eclectic Dutch guitar genius Jan Akkerman recorded shortly after he left Focus in early 1976. For this album Akkerman teamed up with his old friends from Brainbox (his pre-Focus band) singer Kaz Lux (Kaz was the shorter and easier to pronounce version of his full Polish name Kazimierz) and drummer Pierre van der Linden (who was also a member of Focus). He also invited two prominent Dutch keyboards players Jasper van`t Hof (from the Jazz circles) and Rick van der Linden (from the Prog circles, founder and leader of the Dutch Prog bands Ekseption and Trace - the Dutch answer to Nice and Emerson, Lake & Palmer - and not relater to Pierre). The result of these sessions produced a great Prog concept album based on a story by Lux. The stellar personnel and the superb vocal performance make it as strong as any parallel Prog concept album, but unfortunately it received very little attention at the time and remains mostly forgotten. For the followers of Akkerman's work over the years this is quite a revelation and his exceptional work as a composer and guitarists are fully featured here. Essential for Akkerman and Focus fans.
