I've got my books pretty much in random order, and I'm trying to think of a good way to arrange them. Any ideas?

Half-organized, half random.

I gather all the books of an author I have in the library, and arrange them chronologically.
Besides this, the authors aren't arrange in any specific way. Yet there is an outlined "section" of literature, philosophy, physics compendium (my parents are physicists), "children's corner", art and so.

I do the random thing, but they do tend to end up in height order by some magical process I've yet to determine.

However, the arrangement by colour looks interesting - I did that with my CD's for a while until shuffling them along to make way for a new one became tedious. I think I might try that for books so I can have a rainbow of colour across my bookshelves.

Unless they are Mr. Men books of course, then you have to arrange them in the correct order to get the big picture across the spines.

What?

You're lying, Lee!  I saw a book on your coffee table, as well as another out of order in your bookshelf!

As for me... not very well... I still can't find two of my Borges' editions!

You saw one bookshelf. Our bedroom has a couple of bookshelves too. I probably only have a 10th of my books on display. The rest are in boxes in the loft.

Mrs Erg (Evelyn) has been using a lot of my books for research into Society in 17th and 18th Century England.

I have thousands of books, which is a constant source of irritation to my wife.I like mine to be arranged by genre, then alphabetically withing the genre itself.

I do too!

and it looks more like this:

Music
Geography/geopolotics/History
Pleasures of the earth (other than music that is) >> food and stuff
Bego-French Bande Dessinées (this could be called hard cover comics)
Fiction
Travel/Economy/Discovery/Science

------------------------------------------------

But I supposed the original question was that he talked of fictions (at least I suppose)

As with Cds and Vinyls, I generally avoid the alphabetical orders and it next to impossible anyway due to the incredible change of format. So it mostly random, and I don't even bother with languages.

But when possible I will separate by genres, then chronology, then authors, then chronology inside an author's oeuvre.

But it's safer to answer Random.

Alphabetical order of writer's names, and if I have more than one book by the same author, I place them in chronological order of release.

Same thing with my albums.

I combine the criteria, so I'd better name the shelves. The most important is the shelf with my essential Romanian authors, the books I can be defined by (poetry, prose, essay). Then there's a shelf for philosophy; another one for aesthetics; one for the literature of the Renaissance (all countries), one for 19th century literature (mostly French), and another one for the literature of the Greek and Roman antiquity. One growing corner is that for classical era literature (centuries 17&18). One more shelf is for Romanian prose - the left half for the pre-war era and the right half for the post-war era. The "professional" shelves count one shelf for Romanian literature on art and a several other with art history & theory books from other cultures. And finally, there's the shelf for art albums.

Unfortunately, now I live far away from the place I lived before and where my library still is.  Here's a picture of me in front of a slice of my bookshelves:

Yes, I was mainly talking about fictions. My non-fiction books are in an order similar to yours:
Music, movies, literature, philosophy, religion, sciences, computers, etc.

Mine are arranged by how I put them on the shelf when I took them out of the box, after I moved.

So basically it is random, but all the works by the author are together. Or by Genre. Or subject. Or color.  Anyway it is a random set of random groups.
