 Topic: I just can't "get into" Anglagard-Epilo

I simply can not "get into" Anglagard-Epilog
... and that makes me sad
because I feel like I've been left out of all the fun. 
After reading many rave reviews about Anglagard,
I was looking forward to getting one of their albums.
Finally, a couple months ago, I got a copy of Epilog
and was sooooo excited to check it out. 
Even though I enjoy the band's influences and can recognize their ablities,
there is something that just doesn't work for me -- despite numerous listens.
Actually, it kinda makes me feel like I'm listening to instrumental backing tracks
to Wind & Wuthering-era Genesis outtakes ... or something like that.
Not that THAT is altogether bad -- It's just unfulfilling.  Darnit !
Sorry ... I just felt the need to share this.

Thank you. I thought I was the only person in the prog world who doesn't get the appeal of that band. Prepare for some invective, though.

Hmm.... maybe you shold try Hybris instead? I generally prefer that to Epilog, and I personally find it a slightly better album. Also, it does contain some vocals, which might make it more interesting than Epilog. Or maybe Änglagård just isn't your cup of tea

Hybris is a totally different album to Epilog - having been absolutely blown away by Hybris i bought Epilog, but missed half the cd by falling asleep - it's booooring!
buy Hybris - no prog collection is complete without it!

I remember vividly that I got Hybris by Anglagard as a promo while working for Dutch SI Magazine in the early Nineties. I got it because I was infamous for my Mellotron-mania and indeed, this is one of the most beautiful Mellotron drenched symphonic prog albums, especially Kung Bore Then I also received their new CD Epilog (nowadays not easy to purchase) and already during the first listening session I was very disappointed because the music is so quirky, from very melodic too complex and even experimental, the music doesn't carry me away like on Hybris and I still don't like Epilog although it contains some awesome Mellotron parts.

Honestly, I have had Hybris for quite some time now, and have given it repeated listens and I just can't get into it. (Someone should tell that album that "He's just not that into you!")  I'm not really sure why; I enjoy mellotron and the musicianship is definitely up there. I think that it may be the compositions themselves that don't click with me.

Anglagard is a special band that appeals only to us chosen ones. Don't
fret that you were not chosen - I wasn't chosen for Mars Volta.
In all honesty, it's sort of a mature album that requires patience,
meditation, and the channelling of invisible forces to appreciate.
As long as you tried, you shouldn't feel bad - as long as you listened
to it with unprejudiced ears and tried your best to enjoy it regardless
of expectations.

I've never heard Epilog (though I'd very much like to). Hybris, however, is an excellent album.

I love Änglagård, and find Epilog to be a more mature album than Hybris, though both are excellent. How can anyone with their senses working claim that "Sista somrar" is boring? Beyond my comprehension...

Its good but it does loose focus, its not as tight as Hybris, certanily more experimental and darker too

I never enjoyed Epilog. Its too complex for its own good. It looked as if they tried too much. Hybris, one the other hand, is a good album. You should at least try listening to Hybris before calling it quits.

Hybris is wonderful. I also enjoy Epilog, but I agree, it's not as great as Hybris.

Lack of focus? Not as tight.? Too complex for its own good? Tries too hard?
Maybe the last couple of minutes of "Höstsejd" can be a bit repetitive, but apart from that: A true masterpiece of prog imo.

I listened to "Epilog" about 10 times before I started enjoying it. It was interesting and I don't know why I still kept trying but eventually you learn the odd rhythms and can rock out to them with much joy. Absolutly fantastic music once it clicks!
