Once I responded to a question like this one. Once another PAer retorted that this was a prog site & to basically bugger off to prog-related. SO i now know better than to post my fave bands as they include non-prog acts.

Off the top of my head Caravan, Zappa, Porcupine Tree, Renaissance, Gentle Giant, Echolyn, Transatlantic, King Crimson, Yes. Among others.
Though there were plenty of other amazing bands that only got to release an album or two.

Changes very, very often. For Prog, my favourite band is Van der Graaf Generator, closely followed by Gentle Giant. Univers Zéro and Etron Fou Leloublan are competing for third place.
My favourite non-Prog band is probably At the Drive-In.

As of right now they are:
Mr. Bungle, Estradasphere, Secret Cheifs 3, Manticora, 5uu´s, Henry Cow, Battles, Yellowjackets, The Flaming Lips, Skank, Dave Brubeck, Ni Hao, O Rappa, Le Orme, and Lightning Bolt.
Each day i´m on here a new band will probably become my favorite. But thats how it is right now.

I thought it was odd you didn't mention Kingston Wall due to the Von Hertzen Brothers. I actually prefer Kingston Wall...very amazing.
