Topic: Yes vs. Genesis: The 80's! (11th ROUND) Posted: May 04 2007 at 21:03 |
Maybe this will be unnecessary but... I strated this and I have ti finish it... Anyway I think this gonna be very funny. I'm not a huge fan of the 80's period in the careers of Yes and Genesis but I will always be surprised by the extreme opinions of my fellow progheads about this "obscure" years... So, let's play!
As you know you have to choose your favourite album between Yes and Genesis. The tourney started with their debut albums and will stop with their 80's albums. Every round will face the next studio album of both discographies and you have to choose your favourite...
So let's vote. I don't know what I'll do at the end of the 80's but let's enjoy this musical battle...
Best regards from Chile... (This round will close next tuesday)
History of Elimination:
YES Yes vs. GENESIS From Genesis to Revelation

YES Tales from Topographic Oceans vs. GENESIS The Lamb lies down on Broadway

I don't care much for Abacab, but 90125 is a good album.

Maybe not intended, but yet another thread paving the way for more bashing against 80's era Yes and Genesis. Not sure what's more irritating: this or Rosie O'Donnell on The View.
Voted for 90125. Would've possibly voted for Abacab were it not for "Whodunnit?"
OK, commence bashing. Trying to stop such pettiness is about as futile as trying to stop a freight train with surgical gauze.

Even though Abacab is not as good as most records that preceded it, it is a good album with solid compositions (at least, most are). A progressive move for the band. I keep defending the album. It's certainly no "Abacrap"!
90125 is brilliant. I'm sure a lot of Yes fans don't agree with me, but I think it's one of the best albums Yes ever did. I listened to it many, many times.
I choose 90125.

I envy people like you like albums many hold in disdain, because it means you're difficult to dissapoint; and it also means you get to enjoy more music, I wish I was like that.

E... When I started this series of polls my intention was never to turn them into bashing polls. That's the reason why in first place I think to finish the polls with Drama vs. Duke but the opinions (most of them really serious and sincere) were very interesting so I decide to continue with the 80's albums even when I'm not a big fan of that period... So, now I really expect that the replays to this and the next polls will be serious and sincere as before...
Peace

Well, I wished that that was true . No, in fact, most albums I bought last year I found very disappointing. Even that much, that I'm planning on taking a break in buying prog albums. I see a lot of raving reviews on the site, and then I buy an album, and then I think: what on earth do people see in it? Happened to me several times last year. Actually, I'm quite a critical listener.
Maybe Genesis is just an exception to the rule. I prefer Gabriel era Genesis in general, just like most people on the site, but I happen to be a big fan of And Then There Were Three, and Duke to a lesser extent, and I think Abacab has some solid compositions as well. Genesis just changed their sound drastically. It's not only epics that make good music, and in terms of compositions, I think Abacab still has a lot to offer. That is my honest opinion, and I'm not the only one, because my Abacab thread had a lot of positive responses.
