I did the similar poll less than the two months ago.
Oh, and BTW i'm left-handed. I'm glad that PA is not sharing the same ratio as the rest of the world. |

Sorry folks , I normally search but didn't this time. Was in a bit of a hurry and was overwhelmed by some of these polls we get subjected to time and time again - and here I'm guilty of the same thing to some extent.
In the meantime, my right hand is trying it's best to reject the rest of my body after hearing that I went for 'Lefty'. I must have muttered something in my sleep about it - Lefty looks like its swallowed the canary and is even contributing more than normal to the typing of this post. Mr.Right is not happy!! |

Ah, now fellow proggers, I am going to propose that this Poll is different to that of our clarke2001 which seems to be more interested in the statistical side of handedness.
This Poll invites you to make a choice- you may well be right handed, but is it your favourite hand? Indeed, are there dark forces at work involved in pitting one hand against the other. Consider this . Are you dextrous? Are you ambidextrous? What does it all mean? The derivation of the word 'dextrous' seems to be in heraldry. [Please correct me if I'm wrong. I am no scholar in this area]. 'Dexter'= the right hand side of a shield. Now here's the rub . The left hand side of a shield is 'Sinister.'.......What the.....What is sinister about being on the left. Why is someone gifted enough to use both hands effectively, said to be ambidextrous? Why not ambisinistrous. Is this all some kind of discrimination against the lefties from the dark side? Is this where the stigma of being left handed emanates from ? Why do I even care when I'm right handed? Well, it's the whole point of the Poll! My dear wife [bless her left handed heart] regularly points out that lefties are more talented, more artistic. Are they? Who says? Like me , do you sympathise with all that is your left hand and what it does ? Is there some kind of sinister manipulation going on ? It's almost as if right hands know all this , sitting so dextrously pretty! Right hands can be so smug sometimes. now press..........teh key proply yo..u evil ha..n......ahg!... ahghhh...let ....gooooo............ |

hmm... I like the sound of the sinister left. But I use my right for my favourite things
Wait if I only had my left I could still play guitar If I learned tap, who needs picking! Wait I could tap with my right.
this is too hard I love them both

They say left-handed people are often more artsy - that might just be why. |

Dear mrgd, I was often asking the same questions myself. And you seem to be a prime time candidate to read the book A Left-hand Turn Around The World: Chasing The Mystery And Meaning Of All Things Southpaw written by David Wolman, published by Da Capo Press. You won't be any smarter -- it's unfocused pop-science book - but it's a nice food for a hungry lefty brain. Cheerio! www.alefthandturn.com Edited by clarke2001 - May 02 2007 at 10:28 |

TO CLARKE2001:
Thanks for the recommendation - I am not aware of it. Certainly sounds interesting though. I'll hunt it down . My wife will love it no doubt - could be an ideal present. It sounds as if she would be considerably bouyed by it's contents. [When we get it , I'll let my left hand turn the pages while righty sits and sulks. He won't be happy just holding it . I could use a book rest though which would stuff him right up . He'll no doubt sit there plotting his next move the vengeful SOB - I sincerely hope it won't send me to sleep. I am becoming increasingly woried about the psychotic behaviour of ....you know who.....but I will battle on]. |

I'm right handed.. so since I write with it and is the source of my own
version of 'thunder fingers' I guess I'll vote tor the
right.
Not sure the point though... it's not like I prefer it.. it is the way we are born I guess |

I bet you've tried cutting off the circulation so one or other hand goes numb, therefore making it feel as if somebody else is... ...no? Just me, then? |

Born righty, but been using my left hand more than ever. Am I allowed to reinvent myself as an ambidextrous?

I'm right handed, but my dad was left-handed and since he showed me how to do many things, (behave at the back, and stop sniggering), I am partially ambidextrous.
I think most people are capable of being ambidextrous. I know quite a few lefties who were forced to write right-handed (it was an archaic school-thing back in the 50's & 60's) and you can teach yourself to do most things equally as well with either hand (I said stop sniggering!)
It's always puzzled me why for right-handed guitarists the left-hand is use to do the complicated fret-board stuff where as keyboard players use the right-hand for the twiddley bits.
Can you get left-handed flutes? If so do they have to sit at the end of the row in an orchestra so they don't end up having sword fights with their neighbour?
/edti: sheesh, I must be bored to even consider posting in this thread - hasn't anyone got a more interesting topic to discuss? Edited by darqdean - September 12 2007 at 16:37 |
