Rostropovich was an amazing cellist. I read about his death this morning and told a whole lot of people, though most didn't know the name. Poor b*****ds and their Linkin Park will never know what they're missing.

Sad news.
For Russia, he was more than a great musician, he was also a significiant person in political aspect, one of the symbols of democracy.
Too many sad news these days: the death of Boris Eltsin, Rostropovich and, today, the actor Kirill Lavrov (aged 81; he is not known outside former USSR, but here, in Russia, everyone knows him). Edited by NotAProghead - April 27 2007 at 17:19 |

As always, my usual comment of "Death is not a tragedy, just a part of life". 80 years is indeed a long life, and he's to be remembered as a masterful player.

This is indeed sad news.
I don't know his work, alas, but I am aware of his friendship with Shostakovich and that he was a wonderful 'cellist. In pace requiescat Mstislav Rostropovich. |

This is a real tragedy to the world of music, although more fuzz would be made if EMINEM died....I own a few recording with the master in the cello position (Dvorak's concerto, magnificent) but also one with the old master in the director's place: the entire version of Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov (the original score by the composer) with the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington)... Great version though not as superb as one with the Moscow Orchestra by Yevgeni Svetlanov with Ivan Petrov as Boris.... This is a tragedy... Mstislav Rostropovich was one of the last monsters of classical music still alive, in this era when they are less known and when music is synonym with EMINEM for the masses..... His versions of Bach's Cello suites, outstanding. He was the greatest cello player ever, maybe even better than Pau Casals... It's a tragedy....

I think I know that CD your are referring to TR - released by CBS/Columbia - a wonderful compilation of Shostakovich's concertos, with Bernstein as the commonality. Have to thank Andrew Lloyd Weber to introducing me to Cello Conc 1 - a Desert Island Discs choice a couple of decades ago - with AL-W claiming it to be "the first rock concerto"!!!!

=====================================================================
Great Cellist.
I was only listening to a wonderful Shostakovich CD I have:Bernstein - Previn - Rostropovich yesterday and in particular the Cello Concerto in E Flat that I so love and my wife hates. Probably the last of his kind.
