Topic: Your Last 3 Prog concerts and your pendin Posted: April 25 2007 at 16:12 |
In Le Voir or Hour, you should be able to find good shows happening in Mtl and around, and it's not hippie crap at all.

I know what you mean vibrationbaby, but I don't necessary agree with you on all this. If you take the time to read Le Voir magasine ( Hour), you will see that some great shows happened and some others are to come.
Since june 2004, I attended several shows from my favorites; Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues, Carl Palmer Band, Ian Gillan, Roger Hodgson, Roger Waters ( it's a real show and many on this site saw this one...), Chris De Burg, Al Stewart last week -end, Hartfield and The North at the Prog.Fest, Mr. Bill Bruford at the drumfest, Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree at the DrumFest, Steve Howe with Martin Taylor at 5 minutes from home by car), Jérôme Langlois from Maneige at the Prog.Fest, Pat Metheney at the Jazz Festival, Chick Corea at the Jazz Festival, Al Dimeola at the Jazz Festival, and many more. So, I saw many great musicians and singers since three years.
Porcupine Tree is coming next month and it's not expensive at all. Loreena McKennit was at La Place Des Arts last week. ( we were too late to have tickets for this show of world beat music...).
I know that if you only read La Presse, and the big newspapers, it's seems that nothing interesting is happening here, (e xcept maybe about Arcade Fire). Journalists around the city seems to know nothing about music, and they just go to concerts that are for 12 to 15 years old children ( Madonna, Fall Out Boys, etc...). Nothing to read about the concerts that I attended so far in these news papers.
There is certainly something for you, but you have to search for them.

I guess what I sort of meant that back in the late seventies and early eighties there were better bands ( for me that is ) and they were always coming here and being promoted by the media. I never pick up the Mirror or Hour because I guess I`m just not into that hippie crap ( no offense intended). Ronnie James Dio said the same thing as you in an interview about the media having minds like adolescents as far as music is concerned.

You guys in Europe are lucky lucky lucky lucky lucky lucky ducks. Guru Guru has to be one of my all time favourite bands and have NEVER got to see them. I was lucky enough to see Grobschnitt, though. I didn`t even know that Hoelderlin was still going. Here in Montreal the music scene has gone to the dogs since the seventies and even our jazz festival sucks. Back in the seventies we had homegrown Quebec bands like Octobre, Harmonium and Maniege . We also had UZEB & Le Band later on in the 80`s & 90s which fortunately I have seen a number of times although they were more popular in Europe. The last show I saw was Black Sabbath , oh sorry, Heaven & Hell with Dio and even though it was a great show with a very enthusiastic audience the Bell Canada Centre was only partially filled. People are just not enthusiastic about class acts anymore and all we get are the heavy hitters Roger Waters, Madonna, Rush etc. Birelli Lagrene is probably the only "real" show I`ll see this year. I stopped going to the Montréal Communist Jazz Festival two summers ago because the ticket prices are through the roof and they almost strip search you before getting to see the supposed "free" shows. Have fun at Guru Guru & Hoelderlin .

Maybe Canadians had somekind of complex for their music and their groups, but now we realize that our groups were good enough and even better to what was going on around the planet rock.
I am amazed to find that many people likes Rush or even Harmonium, and those people are coming from many countries, in South America, USA, Australia, or Nordic Countries. It's very flattering, because I always tought that Harmonium was somekind of a local group, and not at all an international one.
We also had UZEB ( Jazz fusion band from Quebec...) who was very popular in Europe.

It's all a question of taste, I suppose. |
Canadians and Belgians share the same kind of complex. They always believe that elsewhere things are better, so they forget to look at the local stuff.
I lived in TO in 70's and 80's, and always thought that the local bands did not deserve the international recognition some of them got. (like Saga, Coney Hatch, Honeymoon Suite , Strange Advance etc...) , but on the other hands, some bands were not getting enough of it: Maneige, Max Webster etc...
But I understand that Post rock has now been worn to the threads. After all, it has been ten years since the first GYBE! and DMST albums, and there hasn't been much new under the sun since.

Oh I forgot, I also saw The Mars Volta opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They were ok, but Volta was astounding in every sense! I actually went to teh show for the opening band and that my friends were going.

Last was the BajaProg festival. 20 bands in 4 days and absolutely amazing! What a great experience. I wish I could go every year, but I must take vacation time to do it and my non-prog-loving wife doesn't see it as a priority. Before that, it was a Genesis tribute band and the Flower Kings in Whittier.
Next three: Glenn Hughes at the Whiskey. Porcupine Tree at the Avalon, and possibly CalProg.

We seem to be in the same area Terry. I was at the Musical Box show in Whittier in 2004 (only time they came out west) although I missed TFK because I had seen them at Calprog 05.

But, prog shows on the horizon, I don't know. At the date I only know DT is coming.

You are a lucky man chopper seeing Greg Lake live. How did you like the show ? Did you have his autograph ? Did you have the chance to talk to him ? Do you have some pictures ? |
I saw Greg Lake twice on his last tour. Hung around afterwards to my Works album signed [the inner cover pic], only need Emerson now and it's complete. Greg came across as a nice guy and I never realised how tall he was, must be over six foot. He told me he is a fan of Andreas Broccoli [i think thst's his name?]

It's been a while, but my last three were Peter gabriel in 1993, Genesis in 1986, and Marillion in 1985.
My next one will be Nearfest this June.

Mahogany Frog, Chris Cutler and Do Make Say Think play the same week in Toronto and you find you don't get many prog concerts.
Wow, I know places where they'd sign up with both hands to get that in one year.
