I actually like some songs by Tavares (It only takes a minute
girl,Heaven must be missing an angel) nice vocal harmonies, very greasy
though, and some other disco tunes (Disco Inferno) not to mention the
scissor sisters. do i feel guilty? absolutely not!

I am the kind of person that think that every type of music deserves to be listened, it also depends on the listener's tastes and that's what makes us all different. When you are growing up, your musical taste goes through a "journey" that ends with the choice of staying with prog as your first listening option...however, there are some bands/singers that still you like, no matter what...
I am not guilty at all for the bands i'm going to list because, as i said before, the music experience relies heavily on the listener and his perpspectives...
* The Cure (does anybody hate their "goth" era, 80-83?)
* Bauhaus (Masters of Goth)
* The Smiths/Morrissey (Finest brit pop at its best!)
* Nick Cave & the bad seeds
* Metallica (81-90 era)

Well, after some reactions to a modest proposal to introduce some of their albums in PA, I'd say the Italian melodic pop band Pooh. On the contrary, my passion for ABBA is not a mystery at all!

Triumvirate: so cheesy and EL&Pish but so beautiful (Illusions... and Spartacus, of course).
EL&P itself: bombastic and overrrrrrr. But it was my introduction to the prog world. But I can't hear to Works anymore; only Palmer's side and the last side. Emerson's Concerto is one of the greatest pioece of cr%p from the sevenies.
Uriah Heep: in some circles I never mention the great love I have for this band (Byron & Lawton era, specially the first one). Wonderworld was my first Heep experience and still is so emotional for me.
ABBA: God, these guys make me remember my childhood! And I love their melodies and the gorgeous voices of Fritha and Agnetha. And they were so beautiful...
Wakeman: so hyperbolic. In my defense, I really apreciate only his first album, The Wives.
The Monkees: I don't care if they were just funny guys without a drop of talent; their music was good pop-rock in the sixties way.
Helloween: The second Keeper is the only power/melodic metal someone really need to have. But it's wonderful!
Mercyful Fate: I know that King Diamond is creepy - in a way he certainly wouldn't like to know. But I really love their first couple of albums.
There is more, but I can't remember now. Shame on me!

I never played it in high school actually. Anyways, it just seems really dumb that people will admit to liking something they obviously do not feel guilty about. Especially when the artists aren't even considered guilty pleasures. I mean people are just listing whatever they hell they want. Its more like "name the band you like to listen to but don't listen to that much". Come on, since when are Metallica, Faith No More, the Who, Bob Dylan, etc guilty pleasures? Since when is listening to good music considered a guilty pleasure? Oh my gosh I listen to f**king Beethoven, I'm so guilty. Please arrest me, because no one should know I like the 5th symphony. BLASPhEMY. Seems a little ridiculous, almost like my sarcasm.

Being a teenager in the 80's meant I was exposed to Duran Duran, Tears For Fears, Teardrop Explodes and my favourite band from that era was Simple Minds.
Also have a soft spot for many 70's glam rock bands, The Sweet, Slade & David Bowie.

My guilty pleasure bands : Alice Cooper , Black Sabbath and America ( I've got a soft spot for well done harmonies I also like CSNY but I don't feel guilty about that ).

at the moment mine is Genesis, I don't like them a lot, but I'm ashamed that I like their Nursery Cryme as much as I do...    (that about summarizes my range of emotion at the moment)

After a couple of beers I may put on some of the waltzes and polkas of Johann Strauss II. I love classical music and opera, but Strauss is considered "classical light" by some and therefore not appreciated the same way as say Johannes Brahms or Richard Wagner; which is rather sad.

um, i would say my guilty pleasure in music would be either euro dance music or 80s pop. After playing hours of ddr i really grew to love the music, and bands like tears for fears i still think are cool. They made high quality pop music, and some of those bands could actually play. Um, also i would say level 42. Mark King is a great bassist even though he is in an uber cheesy group (who can all play fairly well). I also really like some bluegrass every once in a while.

I don't think liking anything outside prog is a reason to feel guilt. The way I see it, geting to know and enjoy different genres makes you a better listener. I congratulate myself for having such a big disposition to know about any kind of music. Regardless I find out I like it or not. I've heard from Classical to Jazz (old and fusion), Oldies (50's, 60's), classic rock, 80's pop (love it to death), 80's heavy metal (blond long hair guys type), dark, thrash metal, speed metal, death metal, pop and rock in my language, very old music from my country (stuff very few people under 60 listen to, I'm 32). I enjoy all kinds of prog, from the very light to the most complex and inaccesible.
When I was around 18 I really thought anything that wasn't prog, was crap. I started listening to 80's pop actually, and never stoped liking it. But I would take advantage of any situation to bash "inferior" genres to prog. After a few years I learned that there is more than complexity to music to make it good. Like diversity, passion, inspiration, feeling. And that was when I found out there are tons of crap in prog. I used to like Le Orme, but from a few years to date, I can't help finding it cheesier every day. Has anyone ever listened to "I heard it through the grape vine", by Marvin Gaye?, a 60's oldie?. I contains more passion and conviction than all Relayer together.
Feel guilty of disregarding thousands of great songs out there, just to be able to say Prog is the ultimate genre. ...It is not. Don't get me wrong, I love it. But not taking a chance to enjoy the rest of the music in the world is a huge mistake.

Is this the same band that used to be called (with much more subtlety) "I Pooh"?
