May the prayers of all be directed to the families who tragically lost their loved ones today.  It's the very least we can do for them...

Leave the finger-pointing for another day.

Has anyone seen the Porcupine Tree video released today?  The message in the movie IS that stuff like this is happening.  In the video even, the kids are holding guns, pointing at each other.

The shooting was a horrible thing.  I do not understand why people could feel as though they need to do something like that.

Everyone please go watch the Porcupine Tree video.  It was released on the same day as this tragedy, and I think that everyone should see it.

I forgot to say why I believe that stuff like this happens.  I am a teenager, a sophomore in high school.  All I really ever see is people who don't care.  People who hate their teachers for trying to give them an education.  People who do drugs cause they saw someone else do it.  People who drink cause they think it's fun.

I very much dislike this society that I am growing up in.  As for myself, I avoid everything that I can.  No drugs, no drinking, I try in my classes, yet I also have many friends and I do not wish to seem "odd" or like a "loser".  That's one of the major problems I see.  Many people are viewed as odd, out of place.  They are the people who try, they are the people who care.

Many times I hear the statement "Why do you try so hard?".  My only response is that "I care".  I believe that our youth are growing up not caring enough.  That not caring enough can lead to people not caring enough about life, which can lead to these mass murders.

I'm a bit surprised at the death toll, but surprised at a shooting? No, it's nearly commonplace.

It's messed up, man. Your immediate reaction is to make gun laws more restricted to try and curb violence like this, but that won't really do much. There's something about America. Something that makes us so f**king inconsiderate to blow 31 people away. We need to have a major sociological survey on this, because this country is going to sh*t and I hope it's not to late to pull it out of the toilet.

This event really just fueled my long lasting disgust and anguish on this whole issue.

Ever since I was old enough to realise to "trust no one"...I have been a bit careful in my life.  I always sit in the back corner of class, near the back door (double doored classrooms)...I have heavy classroom anxieties, ever since about 9th grade...I really cant stand what I have fallen into.  I find peace and tranquility in soolitude, small town and country.

This event is truly awful, there was a man being interviewed who is a specialist on school shootings and things like this, and he really said things straight.  This society is not a pool but a sewage drain, there are so many elements adding to the already disturbed, and we just can not feel safe.

Why must I go to school for so long?  Even my professors agree 4 years of college education is overkill, with 15 classes per week...get us out as soon as possible so as we are not fallen victim to our fellow ignorant classmates.

I really hope I make it through my senior year, and this year as well...I pray for those killed and injured, a truly awful aspect of an exceedingly disturbing, cruel society.

what do you mean "going to sh*t"? It's been there for years.....though the rest of the world seems that way as well. People are trying to sell images to the youth, and have found that (sadly) the ones that are most detrimental to society and to people's morals as a whole are the ones that sell the best, and people continue to bank off of that. We also are deluded as a society, believing that if you don't undergo the rigid schooling that you're supposed to that you're a failure to society. Dead (sorry if I got a bit off topic)

Update:

Apparently my friend who was in class where the shootings happened is in the ICU at a local hospital.  We don't know any details besides that he's doing OK and that we're not allowed to visit.

Between the greed and the never ending pursuit of materialism and social status that drives America, it is no wonder that today's youth are numb or are trying to make themselves numb.  Expansion of knowledge is seen by many as a waste because Big Brother is going to dictate your life anyway and without a high level of drive you can't get ahead.   There is a lot of money in this country and a lot of people have it who haven't earned it.  They have inherited it from hard working parents and grandparents and their right of entitlement is scary.

The outrage of this Don Imus thing is all just political correctness run amok.  But it really points out that people do not have in their sights what is really important and that is attaining or helping others attain some measure of fulfillment in life.

My 7 yr old daughter got upset at me because I wouldn't read her a bedtime story.  I thought that instead of reading a book that she has read 10 times, that we could talk about something new and I could try and teach her something interesting or give her something to think about.  I think I have my topic for tonight.

Horrible...simply horrible. Words really can't do justice for an event like this one. This just shows how screwed up America is today.

My prayers go out to all the loved ones and all the survivors of this tragedy.

May God rest the souls of the innocents.

I'm happy to live in a place where having weapons is a crime.

For those who need to understand, the best "explanation" I ever got for such things happening was in the movie Elephant by Gus van Sant.

My question (which is more of a story) is this:

I woke up at 9am, when the first shooting had occurred at 7:15, and I received an email that said there had been a shooting in one of the dorms, but that class was to continue as scheduled
I then went to get on the bus to go to class at about 9:45, and the bus driver pulled over and said class was cancelled and the buses are shut down.
At noon, we find out 22 people are dead.

There is a serious lapse in communication somewhere, and it seems it put many people's lives at risk.

the press...TV... in DC are already out for up in arms on that.....  that is unexcuseable...

watching the local news here...... completely and utterly tragic and senseless. I'm glad you are OK.  For what it's worth... Raff  TM'd me to tell me, and my first thoughts were of you and other posters here that may attend.  So very happy you are safe.

Was the name of this thread changed?

Anyway, just got back from class, Heard the OFFICIAL toll right now is 32, including the gun men. A little frightening to think people my age, fellow college students killed for absolutely no reason. If such a thing was ever to happen, what could you do? And I am living away from home, the turmoil the family would go through. My campus is a place where I feel so safe, like a second home almost.

To think, what circumstance could drive a person to this?
And to Golden Spiral, I don't know what to say man. I pray everything is alright.

I think it was Stonebeard who said it, but school shootings do happen all the time. It's always a tragedy, and in this case 31 people.

I don't know what, but something...has to be done to TRY and stop this. Columbine, VA Tech now, how many of these need to happen?
And we will see in the time to come, what impact will this have on schools now.

Sorry to bring it up again, I was in class and now can finally think about it...
