Hi all,

First post.  Looking for feedback on my 2 new songs.  Progressive rock with influence mainly from Mairllion....  but purely instrumental.

Thanks

Hey there.  I went off to that link and listened to your song, and I found it quite enjoyable.  You have some very nice sounds and it was mixed very well.  I was wondering how you record your stuff?  Such as, was that a drum machine or do you work with other people.

Also, I only found one song there, but I would like to hear more (you said you had two new songs).

Good job though.

asimplemistake:

Thanks for your comments. There is a second song that I uploaded, but MySpace says 'in progress'. Guess we need to wait and see if it pops up today. The second one is a lot more elaborate (bit of an 'Epic' tune, if you will).
EDIT: It's there now.

I use Reason (from PropellerHead software) for all the instrumentation and mixes. It is an incredible piece of software. Guitar is real, and overlayed though...

Just got done with the second song.  It too is very enjoyable.  You do a very good job of using different sounds throughout your songs (I especially like that guitar sound that comes in about a minute into the newer song).  I too make music, but I find it harder to use many sounds because I use a light version of a recording program, meaning that I can only use 4 midi tracks and 4 audio tracks.  If you have some time, maybe you could check out some of my stuff at http://www.myspace.com/dancaputo.

Something else that I enjoyed about your stuff was that it was...happier (for a lack of a better term).  I'm used to listening to more melancholic music because I find that a lot of happier music sounds very poppy, but your music I did enjoy.

asimplemistake,

Thanks a lot for your comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the tunes. I feel they need lyrics/vocals to really be complete, but I have no talent for that at all.

You're right about the happy feel/mood. That was totally the intent. I was trying to put together something with a bit of an epic feel to ti on the Triumphant Exit track. Something that would make you feel inspired or motivated. Or happy even as you put it.

I will listen to your stuff and let you know what I think.

You really HAVE to try propellerheads reason:
http://www.propellerheads.se/

They have a free trial. It is absolutely incredible, and although it looks complicated, it is in fact very very easy to use!

Thanks!

I'm kind of low on time right now, so I can't download the demo now, but I did go to the site and I'm liking what I see.  Theres a guy who goes to my school who's also very into recording, and he uses Reason.

When I get some time though, I'll test out Reason.  The reason I use the program I am currently using is because I have two products made by M-Audio, that go very well with the Ableton programs.  I just haven't bought the full version of Ableton Live yet.  I'm still searching for the best possible program for me before I spend a lot of money on it, so I'll go check out Reason.

I went ahead an listened to the 4 songs you have on myspace. I'm very impressed.

ON MY OWN: Terrific! I love the mood you set with this song, and I think the 'monk-chorus type vocals' are just perfect for the melody. It's all quite melancholic, great work.
LOOKING BACK: A very good tune too. I think you do a great job of creating ambience without over-doing it.
MONOMANIA: not my style, so I really can't comment on this one.
ONE DAY: This one I liked a lot too. Good work on the guitar volume swells.

All in all I enjoyed your style very much. If you like Porcupine Tree, I think you should listen to KINO's only album (Pictures).

I think if you learn to use Reason, every single one of your songs could be greatly enhanced even more, because you will easily be able to add some more ambience and textures.

Thanks!

JustinTime - I just listened to the two songs you have up on myspace.  They are incredible!  You definately have a lot of naturlal talent.

Triumphant exit is so expressive, and makes amazing use of different sounds.  They interweave beautifully, and the title really says it - the mood is triumphant.  I love it!  And I'd love to hear some vocals over it, too.  Digression - is that a built-in piano sound in Reason, or were you recording a real piano/keyboard?  It sounds like it's real to me, which is why I ask.  There are some lovely soft sounds in the background on this one that add tremendously to the overall texture.

asimplemistake - I also checked out your stuff, very interesting!

Monomania I think is very appropriately titled.  It sounds kind of like what goes on in my mind when I'm experiencing one-track thinking of a negative kind.  Some cool riffs in this one!  On My Own is pleasant and somewhat Anathema-esque, and I thought the harmony-vocals were very well placed, having a great magnifying effect on the song.  Looking Back is a moving song, I like your use of keyboards (or is that technically a mellotron sound?) to softly play the background chords.  One Day: the guitar in this was lovely!  I'm just learning how to use my guitar pedal, myself.  I thought the mixing in this one was superb, and I think this one might be my favorite of the four.

If you guys are interested, my project is at:
http://www.myspace.com/sonolumina
It's in a very rough form, since there's no one else but me working on it at the moment.  Even the person who's actually the singer hasn't been recorded yet.

I have another one at http://www.myspace.com/thejamexperimentband , but that one's kind of broken up now that the drummer moved to CA... along with his wife, who is the singer!
Check out the Unsigned Bands section!

I'm confused. :(    The description under Music and Musicians Exchange says 'Provide links to original music for feedback from members and/or find or talk shop with other musicians on the site'.

"Unsigned bands" is a new section, but its probably the best place for this, as asll the artists are in one section.

What do you think?

Edit.

I will consult with Admin to clarify.

Okay :)  Thanks.  I see, I didn't realize the other section was new, so I guess there's some shuffling going on?

When I looked at the unsigned bands section I was thinking it was for bands that were just pure prog-rock, not prog-metal or anything like that.

It does make sense to have all the artists in one section!  It would make it easy to find a particular artist.

Excellent!  Tongue

Although, now that I'm thinking about it, the metal elements aren't even in mine yet because the band is very much incomplete.  Thanks!

woah I missed out on some action here.  I don't know how to do it myself, but this conversation could be moved into the section for bands.

For JustinTime, I checked out the Reason demo and was surprised by how sophisticated it is.  You do really get a lot of control over the midi's and such.

For StarsongAgeless, thanks for your thoughts, I'd like to go look at your stuff (especially cause you like Opeth Wink), but I'll wait to see what happens to this thread before I give any feedback.

@ For Justintime and Asimplemistake:
I recommend a visit to the forum mentioned above by SnowDog.
I'm quite sure if you'll get more visibility there, including comments and reviews by Collabs, Prog Reviewers and Senior Members.
Please, don't forget to read the guidelines first. Thanks! Smile

It is a standard Reason Piano. It is called 'A Grand Piano'.   It ptrobably sounds a little more real because I changed the velocity on the key strokes... this way they don't all sound with the same volume, and more natural.
