Well, what do you guys think of the Orchestra? I have their first two albums and think there a pretty good band. No where near some of the other Prog greats of the era, but still awesome group.

I think it's a matter of whether you prefer jazz or not to determine which is better. I'm not familiar with much jazz, so a lot of their stuff is over my head. Still great though.

I also recently got Shakti - Natural Elements which is very good also. For those who don't know Shakti is a World Music oriented project of John McLaughlin.

Just amazing... One of the great 70's band and a kind of school of many musicians... Birds of Fire still is one of my all time favourite albums...

And yet I think every other classic prog group tops Yes (with the exception of KC because for some reason I never liked them at all, but I do love Relayer). Such is the power of opinion.

I really should get more into jazz-rock.

Well, I'd say Nucleus were better than all of the "Prog greats," whatever that is supposed to mean, consistently better too. Mahavishnu are of course good, but Nucleus are so much better imo.

I have Birds of Fire, which is a pretty dman good album - definitely has some "holy crap/that's insane" parts in it.
The Lost Trident Sessions wasn't bad either.

Call me crazy, but I liked Visions of the Emerald Beyond the best. Love Jean-Luc Ponty's work on that album, and it seems like the songs have more purpose other than to amaze you with awesomeness.

They are the only fusion band I really really like. I guess it's because they don't sound too jazzy. After Emerald t, though, hey become too funfy for my taste.

And of course re-evaluation of MO is in the vogue now. Mahavishnu Project's three live recordings of reinterpretations of early MO are excellent. A lot of good noise currently about the Colin Towns/Billy Cobham/HR Big Band album. Mastermind with Jens Johnson did enigmatic tribute on Excelsior! Even Gary Husband's piano-based and most excellent Music Of John McLaughlin. For a wacked out re-run of Birds Of Fire, check the Japanese band Kennedy. For an clever bit of hybridisation check out Don Sebeski's Firebird/Birds Of Fire (ex. Giant Box)

Wellm I guess Yes isn't as "extreme" as say ELP, but still, stuff like Close To The Edge, you can't deny how much talent that band has.

I can't believe you mentioned Sebeski's Giant Box.  I have always loved the version of "Song for a Seagull" on there.  I'm not sure that the double LP is available on CD so I treasure my vinyl copy.

Mahavishnu Orchestra = God. I saw the Mahavishnu Project in NYC and have to admit they WERE good. I  have their  first album which I got for $5 in a bargain bin. I`ve given the others a listen but they wear thin. It`s nice to hear killer covers but I`ve never rerally been into these bands that play nothing but covers from a single artist. Same with the Musical Box. It`s just rehash. I`ve also got a couple of  live bootlegs of the real Mahavishnu Orchestra from back in the 70`s. The magic that band had will never be repeated by any band.
