Does anyone have any of those new book/CD combos, such as I saw in a record store this summer? (I saw one for Genesis - Foxtrot, among others.)

What's up with that? Are they any good?

Have you ever seen what I'm talking about?

I think Erik has reviewed a few of them Peter.

The small print on them indicates that they are "not approved by the band as the projects require total independence".

In other words, the artists are not receiving any royalties from them. They tend to have a documentary style, which heaps praise on the products and offers some rare footage. That footage is usually extracts of songs, not complete renditions, presumably to stay within copyright requirements.

Do you think you could provide a link to Erik's reviews.

I have yet to see these Books/cds on the market

I'm not sure about that one, Tristan, but I certainly saw a couple of Genesis ones, including Foxtrot. The package was not open, but the cover art was as per the original Whitehead art, and you seem to get the album, and some sort of hardcover book. Interesting.

I recently bought such a version of Porcupine Trees Deadwing...

CD + DVD-A... all in a funny little 72-page hardcover book full of photos and such.

But this is a contraption though out by Steven Wilson himself. And sold only via burnigshed.com, his online store...

Will see how it looks like when it arrives...

Peter, is the whole packing still the normal jewelcase size or does look like a normal book?

If it is a normal size one, its a DIGIBOOK...

and I love digibooks... They are far cooler than jewelcases and digipacks, and aren't as easy to damage...

But they can get damaged beyond repair. The plastic case are easy to repair, however, the cardboard artwork, can get scratched to death. This does not happen with standard jewel cases.

Oh, what you describe sounds more like a regular Inside-Out special edition, Peter (not that I know they've ever released Genesis albums though). With the cd being the normal size for a CD, but as a sort of hardbound digipack: digibook to be more precise.

The one I mentioned is actually more of the size of a regular DVD-box, only it being a book with CD's inside of it. I've seen these before for the likes of Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, the first ltd edition pressing of Ayreon's "The Human Equation", Jimmy Hendrix... Those are real CD-books, not digibooks..

Exactly, such as Gilmours latest...

Its pretty hard to damage them in the 1st place... And they look extremely cool. The cd can be easily damaged when trying to get it out of the packing however... And thats probably the only draw back

I think the ones Peter mentions are more likely to be the Classic Rock DVDs, not book style versions of offical albums.

I'm not so sure -- the Foxtrot did look pretty official, and I don't think it was a DVD (I'd have been checking for that). I can't seem to find them on Amazon, etc, so I'll just take a closer look next time I see one -- most likely in Toronto.

I do know that there was a book, and a disc -- not simply a compact disc in a cardboard cover (I''ve several of those, but this was a new format, for me.)

I've seen the Foxtrot one you speak of, and if I'm not mistaken, I saw others too...I can't remember off hand, but I found them in the CD section of a book store. I think they're just a form of documentary, but I wouldn't really know.
