So I decided to actually try and make something up instead of messing around like I normally do. This is somehting I did on guitar through a bass amp (I'm a bassist - I borrowed my brother's guitar for this) and I was wondering what you guys think.

Here's the song.

I changed it up a bit and added some background to the guitar.

Good sounds and great ambience on the two MySpace tracks Clap

The only comment I would make (apart from the fact that neither seem to be finished compositions), is that there seems to be a lot of clipping - try adding some compression.

Otherwise, I look forward to hearing the megaupload track, once I've megadownloaded it...

I'd be interested to know what you think of our track Disturbed, which some people seem to think is Prog Metal (it's not, it's just a slightly odd 1980s flavoured rock/electronica song with an improvised guitar solo that I recorded in one take just to give the idea of what a guitar solo could sound like once I'd composed it).

The important thing is not to stop questioning.

I have no idea how to compress stuff and barely know how to use this music program (Calkwalk - I think)

it is supposed to be ambience (my current favorite form of music Tongue)

The first track on the myspace (Into Space He Cried - I make up weird song titles for no reason) is the only "composed" one since I took about 15 tries to get the guitar right.

The ambience part is just me recording me trying to overdrive my 10 watt bass amp and then adding the weirdest sounds to it with the program I use to create the ambience back drop. Also the guitar is played through the same 10 watt bass amp.

Oh and I like that track Certif1ed. Very cool I like the electronica feel to it. It does not sound like Prog Metal but rather heavy symphonic stuff a bit.

Most versions of Cakewalk (isn't it called Sonar these days?) support VST plug-ins, and I'm pretty sure that it ships with a set of VSTs.

If yours doesn't, consider using Sony's ACID - ACID Express 5 is FREE and un-time-bombed - and comes with a bunch of useful and useable VSTs.

Most sets of VSTs include a compressor, as compression is something every musician has to learn about when trying to get a good quality recording.
The important thing is not to stop questioning.

Virtual Studio Technology.

VST plugins are Virtual pieces of studio kit, such as compressors, distortion units, delays and EQ that are vital to getting a good sound. They "Plug-In" to just about any DAW (Digital Audio Workstation - this phrase often means the software, like Cakewalk, ACID, Pro Tools, etc, but can also mean the physical system).

If your version of Cakewalk is reasonably recent, it probably has a few effects plug-ins like these.

If you install a DAW that comes with VSTs, these are typically available to ANY DAW that supports them.
The important thing is not to stop questioning.
