Depends on your status and whereabouts in the world you lived. The Islamic world was far more advanced than Christendom, for example.
 
That is true, I had forgotten about the prosperity in the Middle East at that time. Typically when I think Medieval I think Europe. Plus I am fairly sure my ancestors of that time were English, so I tend to place myself there. Never the less you have a good point.
