That is already done!
About JT we must resituate the debate around people who believe to the roots of bucolic, rustic prog folk songs. I particularly dislike popular mainstream acts, especially when we put the label of superlative music on it!

Maybe so Philippe, but it is a poor review, especially for a senior collaborator. You have simply berated the band and the album without telling us anyhting about the contents. If you don't like an album, the challenge is even greater to write constructive criticism, not merely a generalised rant.

Our senior members, especially those such as yourself who can write so intelligently when they wish to, should demonstrate the art of doing so.

Hugues, thanks for clarifying the apparent profanity. It's fair to say that in English the work is still considered inappropriate for general usage.

Isnt that a little harsh there?Confused

5%20stars Inpraiseoffoly has managed to sum up (LOL) everything that we love in prog reviewing. Pretentious, overblown, full of padding to achieve that mythical length to achieve 'epic' status. While I think that Future Days is simply a better album, his review his convinced me to knock the dust off of my copy of Tago Mago and give it another listen.  There can be no great reward to a reviewer than to either inspire someone to check out an album, stay far away from an album, or get a listener to reconsider their existing notions of it.  In my book a masterpiece of prog reviewing.. 5 stars.. easyMichael (aka micky)

Actually, I think I understand perfectly what Philippe is saying, but being francophone , the review  makes much more sense (on top that I agree that this album is incredibly over-rated) than when I switch my brains in English, then it makes a bit less sense.

Maybe Phillippe could add one more sentence by explaining, why this is watered-down, or just the fact that it is...

Reccomended order in which to buy your Floyd albums:

First: 'Dark Side Of The Moon', 'The Wall' (the more accesible albums, which don't lose their initial effect) Then: 'Animals', 'Wish You Were Here' (the best albums, but probably more appreciated once your more into Pink Floyd) Then: 'Meddle', 'Atom Heart Mother' (great albums, but not neccesarily for the casual listener) Then: 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn', 'A Saucerful Of Secrets' (by now, you'll probably want to venture into their earlier psychedelic days) Then: 'Ummagumma', 'More', 'Obscured By Clouds' (not for everyone, but still very intriguing stuff, and neccessities for the hardcore fan) Then: 'The Final Cut', 'A Momentary Lapse Of Reason', 'The Division Bell'. (Their later efforts, not as inspiring as their 70's work but you gotta catch 'em all)

This is not the entire review, just the part that I feel may be inappropriate. Here he is giving five stars to an album (which means that it is ESSENTIAL), and then in this paragraph suggests that it's not essential. Perhaps he needs a PM explaining that five stars means ESSENTIAL...

Sorry, IPOF, but I saw differently... he gave 5 stars to ATOM and said it's not for the 'casual listener' - I see no contradiction here. IMO there's a bunch of albums that are essential but not easy to get in.  Smile

I can attest to that last sentence... most of my five star albums are real buggers to get into...

But actively not recommending an album to some people while calling it essential is quite a contradiction.  If it's really essential, you should be telling them to toughen up and get the album, not that they shouldn't get it until they better know the band...
EDIT: But I did put it in the discussion rather than abuse section for a reason.

Someone please explain to me why it is he still continues to review prog metal, which he doesn't consider prog...

Pretty low coming from a collab as he continues to do this mostly just to flame the entire genre.

perhaps Sean, but continually reviewing albums to tell everyone that band X or album X is not prog is well, unfounded, incorrect, and also happens to go against reviewing policy.

im usually not a stickler for rules and such, but if I'm going to have my reviews edited and adapted to fit guidelines, I would expect the same rules to apply to others

Me too. I read some of his reviews and got really angry over the content in them saying its not prog etc. Very annoying. In factI just (stupidly) read another review of his, this time Damnation! ARRGH it horrible how he has to say its not prog but then just start to pick it piece by piece and say its not prog and calls it Junk at the end! This is flaming in review s it utterly un-objective in fact very subjective since he describes a lot of stuff which is just him not liking Prog metal period! Why does he continue to bash music? Why? AngryAngryAngry

Hmm, maybe this was a little overboard but it is a shortened version of my reaction to it!

The way I see it, those reviews are just not helpful. he obviously doesn't see what we see in those albums, and it's safe to assume that he's the one not getting something seeing as the whole prog world ranks these albums very highly. The reason people read reviews is to get recommendations, not sit through a 5-page yawner describing in sophisticated technical terms how un-prog this album is, in the midst of rave reviews from almost everyone else. Really, we got the point in the beginning with the SFAM review, no need to munch on it for so long.

And I find it very ironic that he reviewed Scream Bloody Gore, a straightforward sloppy death metal album with no signs of prog 4 stars and Sound Of Perseverance, widely acclaimed as their best and one of their proggiest efforts, a 2.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I am curious though as to how this is considered in "Discussions" and not "Abuse" as I think it favors more toward the latter.

The only reason I really brought this up was because I saw Cert post another " "prog" metal " review today.

That's the one that really gets me, it's flat out unprofessional, a low blow in attempt at humor, especially considering it involves the band Death and Chuck Schuldiner, who can only be described as the classiest and most professional of musicians and persons. RIP Chuck.

Long ago when I read the review for "Sound of Perseverance" I got so upset not because he bashes the album (I guess is his right to think what he thinks) but because of HOW he says it, giving the impression that he thinks prog-metal-heads are stupid or something...Then I searched his reviews and I found the DT-I&W one and that's when I decided to write my own (which is a little bit too sentimental I have to concedeEmbarrassed) because he called the album "unoriginal" and "derivative"...Yes, the ONE album most people (even DT haters) agree that at least CHANGED history, he says is just another album and, the worst, he says "Metropolis" is derivative from Metallica!!!!!! Yes, ONE RIFF that lasts like 30 SECONDS....The guy obviously hates prog-metal and now he's up there in another lounge preaching against it... So I agree.... By the way, what do you say I start with my series of reviews of post-rock albums? Surely post-rock fans won't like that and will think that I do it only for trying to bring the rating down...(as, sadly, some people accused me of doing with KAyo Dot, which is not the case).. So I have chosen NOT to review post rock ever again, even an album I enjoyed like F#A! (or something like that by GYBE!), because, what's the point if you all know I start with a prejudice against the genre? So I agree...100%... As I've said it before....And now up north to defend the genre I travel!!Angry

by all means go ahead and review GY!BE

it might open some eyes to others who would ignore such a great band

and in the same regard, thats exactly why I dont review Neo Prog

if i went and wrote 10 reviews about how much neo prog isnt prog and isnt any good, im sure several people would be up in arms

The reporting thread is just for reporting, not for debate. I think in this case, it is useful to garner opinions on the topic.

Okay I was just reading some of Certif1ed reviews (which are being discussed in the reviews discussion thread) when I came across this  http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=38193

This is not a review it is more of a bash against the band. First he starts off with "Now you've heard this, go listen to some Prog"

And near the bottom of the review he says this: "This appears to be music made by people who have heard heavy metal, liked it, wanted to do something different to impress their mates, but failed to grasp the basics of what makes a piece of music tick."

He disregarded one of the reviewing rules

4 - Write in an intelligent and considerate manner. Rude or insulting language (including blatant vulgarity) will not be tolerated! Show respect for other reviewers, readers, the artists, and the CD and song titles.
