The other day I watched the vocalist from Enchant singing the national anthem before a big football match. Geoff Tate of Queensryche has done this too.
Now...my question
Can you imagine any vocalist (Besides someone from the Prog Metal or Rock, Prog Related Genres) doing this?
From the Symphonic Genre, I can only imagine Steve Walsh (in the 70´s) doing it.
Can you imagine guys like Fish and Jon Anderson attempting to sing their national anthems in front of a big crowd?
So, can you think of anyone in the Neo, Symph, or other genre that would be able to sing their national anthem and would they be able to cut it?

I don't really think I could imagine many prog-artists doing that.... Maybe Ian Anderson?
but slightly off-topic: Jørn Lande(Ark, Masterplan, Jorn etc.) sung the norwegian 1994 football world-cup "anthem" ![]() |

Hard to imagine.
But Shinsekai perform a very cute synthesizer version of 'Kimi ga yo', the Japanese national anthem (which normally sounds rather dreary), on their fascinating album ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. |

While I'm not a great fan of national anthems, I am always amazed why the Americans allow all and sundry to murder "The Star Spangled Banner". Billy Joel at the Superbowl was just plain embarrassing. I watched it in the company of a bunch of Americans while on business in Bermuda, and they were squirming.
And on the Fish theme, Donnie Munro, ex of Runrig has sung Flower of Scotland at Scotland footie games (sometimes miming and missing his cue - more embarrassment!). Edited by CandyAppleRed - March 11 2007 at 18:02 |

You know I wouldn't find it very surprising to find James LaBrie singing in some silly boxing final... But alltogether, I think the whole tradition of singing the bloody anthem in every possible game is stupid, and during spring especially here the anthem is really suffering inflation with one having to heat it at least 3 times a week.

Oh, God, that was even more awful than that recording of him when he was twelve, singing this grating pop tune for a local radio programme or something...
![]() I don't know about singing, but Randy Coven (bass player with ARK and Holy Mother among others) has a pretty nice rendition of the same "Star Spangled Banner" on his solo album, Funk Me Tender, from '89, played entirely on bass. Probably an answer to Jimi's version some twenty years before...

I think many many prog singers that would easily be able to do it. I'm
sure Russell Allen would give the Star Spangled Banner great justice.

Greg Lake sung Jerusalem and lyricized parts of Pictures At An Exhibition (Great Gates Of Kiev I think), and he did it well. If he can do hymnal, anthemic songs, there shouldn't be a problem for him to sing a national anthem, even with his nicotine-stained voice nowadays.
Queen covered God Save The Queen, I could easily imagine Freddie singing it. He performed the Hungarian anthem anyway. And I don't know why but I got an impression that Robert Wyatt could sing easily any anthem...including Internazionale ![]() |

John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers were forced to play God Save The Queen at a Belfast gig, as heard on Diary of a Band - not surprisingly it is a blues.
