In general I love any kind of maj7 chord, as well as m7 ones, possibly because of the fact that they go together quite well. One of the bands I play in (the more pregressive one) thrives off maj7 chords for a dreamy kind of sound, and I've always thought m7 chords sound very mellow.

I think it depends on your instrument as well, say between guitar and keyboards/piano. For example on the guitar there are these two chords I love, they are the phrasings of maj7 and m7 chords on the guitar, as used in "Deadwing" by Porcupine Tree.

But on piano, there is a chord which I am not entirely sure how to name, that my progressive band has come to utilise often. It's something like a maj7 chord in it's sound, but I think the texture is a little more diminished, I actally don't know. The first specimen of the chord that we came up with on the piano, was as follows.

C#

G#

E

Now I can't really decide what that is, and it depends on whether you reverse it to eb, Db, Ab and E because that could also change the way you look at it. But taken in the sharp context, it's almost an Emaj7 just without the 5th and an added 6th.

Or on the other hand it's a C#m/E, another possibility is an Ab(sus4)/E, I'm really not at all too sure. Has anyone got a better name for the chord? I'd be very interested to know.

BTW: What tuning and/or instrument is that? On a 6 string guitar in standard tuning Em79 would look like this:

Recently listened to:

I love the simple yet sadly beautiful Em add9. It's a very common chord for bands like Opeth cause of the 2nd and minor 3rd being rite next to each other. I love how it's used in the song "Windowpane" by Opeth.
