My favourite solos instrument by instrument

Guitar:- John Petrucci on "Under a Glass Moon" - Dream Theatre
Keyboard:- Kit Watkins on "Ibby It Is" - Happy The Man
Bass:- A lot of Jeff Berlin's work with Bruford is just amazing and so very tuneful
Drums:- Neil Peart's solo on "Show of Hands" - Rush
Violin:- a lot  of Akihisa Tsuboy work with KBB is just superb ( and my job is making violins, so I've heard a lot of very good players in my time!)
Trumpet:- Don Cherry on "Lunar Musik Suite" - Steve Hillage
Saxophone:- Dick Morrissey on "Start" - Peter Gabriel
Trombone:- Trent Gardner on "Test of Wills" - Magellan

for multiple solos one following the other it's hard to look past "50-50" by Frank Zappa from Overnite Sensation

My favorite keyboard solo is from Camel's song "Nimrodel." I don't know why, I just love it. My favorite guitar solo is Keith Richards' lightning-bolt-like solo on "Sympathy For The Devil." Its beauty is in its simplicity!

Lots of superb solos have already been mentioned. Steve Hackett's superb guitar solo on 'Firth of Fifth', and Rick W.'s harpsichord solo on 'Siberian Khatru': who could possibly disagree about them?

But the first solo I thought of was Steve Howe's sublime guitar cadenza on 'Sound Chaser', one of the greatest moments in prog.

Almost as good is Patrick Moraz' Bachian minimoog solo on 'To Be Over', just before the final return of the vocals.

And did anyone mention Eddie Jobson's violin solo on the VIVA! ROXY version of 'Out of the blue'?

P.S. If you really enjoy that 'Siberian Khatru' solo, try some of J.S. Bach's harpsichord suites. It's thanks to Wakeman that I discovered them - and they're incredibly exciting!
