Neil Peart solos...enough said.
No other drummer, for a major band, has constructed solos in
such a listenable format. His solos are compositions not wailing fests. |

My favourite solos instrument by instrument
Guitar:- John Petrucci on "Under a Glass Moon" - Dream Theatre
Keyboard:- Kit Watkins on "Ibby It Is" - Happy The Man
Bass:- A lot of Jeff Berlin's work with Bruford is just amazing and so very tuneful
Drums:- Neil Peart's solo on "Show of Hands" - Rush
Violin:- a lot of Akihisa Tsuboy work with KBB is just superb (
and my job is making violins, so I've heard a lot of very good players
in my time!)
Trumpet:- Don Cherry on "Lunar Musik Suite" - Steve Hillage
Saxophone:- Dick Morrissey on "Start" - Peter Gabriel
Trombone:- Trent Gardner on "Test of Wills" - Magellan
for multiple solos one following the other it's hard to look past "50-50" by Frank Zappa from Overnite Sensation

My favorite keyboard solo is from Camel's song "Nimrodel." I don't know
why, I just love it. My favorite guitar solo is Keith Richards'
lightning-bolt-like solo on "Sympathy For The Devil." Its beauty is in
its simplicity!
(p.s. good call on St. Elmo's Fire. Some of the best playing Fripp has ever done.)

Bah, with all of the Zappa love in this thread, no one nailed his greatest moment:
On The Bus from Joe's Garage.
Man that solo gives me teh chills everytime.
Also, mad props for those that recognized Thin Lizzy, that is one sadly unrecognized band, and "Romeo and the Lonely Girl" is a f*&^ing fantastic song.

Great thread!
Lots of superb solos have already been mentioned. Steve Hackett's superb guitar solo on 'Firth of Fifth', and Rick W.'s harpsichord solo on 'Siberian Khatru': who could possibly disagree about them?
But the first solo I thought of was Steve Howe's sublime guitar cadenza on 'Sound Chaser', one of the greatest moments in prog.
Almost as good is Patrick Moraz' Bachian minimoog solo on 'To Be Over', just before the final return of the vocals.
And did anyone mention Eddie Jobson's violin solo on the VIVA! ROXY version of 'Out of the blue'?
P.S. If you really enjoy that 'Siberian Khatru' solo, try some of J.S. Bach's harpsichord suites. It's thanks to Wakeman that I discovered them - and they're incredibly exciting!

It is Vivaldi that you should also give a try for great harpsichord parts, fuxi!
My favourite guitar songs from the 70s actually defide the idea of "song with solo part"; I'm talking about "The Song Remains the Same" and "Achilles Last Stand". Man, those are... sound cascade streams!

Thanks for the tip! Can you recommend any CDs?
I've been a Bach freak for over twenty years; now I've just started listening to Francois Couperin's harpsichord pieces as well. (There's an excellent bargain priced set by Michael Borgstede.)

Mine is "Firth Of Fifth" and will always remain so
I also love the sax and violon solos on "The Gumbo Variations" from Zappa (w/ Underwood, Ponty) I pretty much enjoy all of Steve Hackett's works and especially his instrumental "Sierra Quemada".

Tony Banks - The Cinema Show (Studio version) My all-time favorite solo.
There's so many great solos he's done, from Watcher Of The Skies to all the solos in The Lamb. This was a difficult one for me to pick since his playing is so original and creative. But at the end of the day I always end up coming back to The Cinema Show.
Same here. I also love all of Steve Hackett's work. Also PFM's Franco Mussida's guitar solo at the end of "The Mountain" (The World Became The World), and Mike Oldfield's guitar solos from his album, "Incantations" which I think is one of his best.
