I'm not a virtuoso player like Emerson, Wakeman, Livgren,
ect., even though I listen to them, along with Banks, David Palmer, ect. Never took piano lessons ... I've just been playing for years. I'd say I'm a prog musician because I play originals that are not pop or straight rock. My songs are conceptual, and I rarely follow typical song structure. I favor programming sounds, textures, odd chord structure, and orchastration, over complex playing. If I had to mention someone I play like ... probably Wright, Barbieri, Jarre and Fast, would come to mind. Cool to hear other players on here. |

I'm a classically trained Cello player, but a play many other instruments and i sing. As for my musical activity, i have three projects: One is a prog-power metal band called Golgotha, i'm doing vocals/bass there. Another one is my solo project called Mnemosyne. i play all instruments. It's an avant-garde/space-rock/post-rock/metal project influenced by The Residents, Sigur Ros, Frank Zappa, Mr. Bungle... The other one is a post-rock project called Monserrat... i play bass/cello/theremin/guitars/vocals.
As you can see, i'm a big lover of all Prog...

I use to be in a short lived psychadelic-jam band in the 70's in Spain called GNOMO, have jammed with others here in the US in the 80's, still play the drums along with my Prog CD's and Albums, but thats about it....no Prog in Vegas.

Instruments: Drums, Percussion( does that differ from drums?) and (rudimentary) keyboards. Neal Peart is my main influence and his drumming is gold to me. The way he meshes with Lifeson and Lee is stunning. I'm also a songwriter...since '95.

I play drums, percussions, and piano/keyboard. I want to learn bass. Influences- Bill Bruford, Gentle Giant (as a whole), Phil Collins, and Zappa (with his zany, complex, insane percussions). I have been in a few unoffical bands, all of which went absolutely noplace. I prefer to play prog, but i also enjoy to play swing and classical (not classical piano mind you). I have written a few songs all of which are horrible and haven't been used...yet (i hope). O i can also sing...horribly. |

I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect. |

i threw together an instrumental version of Captain Beefheart's "Moonlight on Vermont" in 4 hours, playing all instruments. unfortunately, the drums are synthesized on a MIDI keyboard because I don't have a drumset or know anyone who drums, it's all slightly out of sync because of my poor mixing, and worst of all the program I used to record it is Windows Movie Maker. I recorded a "video" of me playing each instrument (basically me sitting in a chair with headphones listening and referencing from the original track) and used it's AMAZING two-track capacity, then fused the two tracks and made a third, fused those, then a fourth, and fused that. Other than all these technological limitations, it's quite good if I say so myself, accurately reproduced with some personal touches with the bass and rhythm guitar, while the lead remains accurate. oh, and I brought in my friend who "plays" sax (he's REALLY bad) and got him to solo Beefheart-style over the second half of the track (the part where you'd usually hear "old time religion"). This Christmas I'm getting some real recording software and equipment, and once I get that and figure out how I'll post it here....or somewhere...how do you post stuff here anyway? Who here is a prog musician?
Me. What do you play? I play in a band which exists since 2 years. Once it was punk but we've changed our style into prog (really, that's not a joke and it's not that kind of "prog" like "Muse"). Well let me describe the style of our band: Crazy melodies in odd time signatures who often change, a lot of distortion, not very hard, more a mix of Stoner- or Noise-Rock and classic progressive rock. Unfortunatly we can't find a keyboarder. Our band has 5 members: 1 Lead-Singer, 2 guitar-players, 1 bass-player, 1 drummer Who are your influences as a musician? I'm extremly influenced by Gentle Giant. |

I play rhythm guitar for a band called Unorthodox, even though me and a friend of mine who plays bass are trying to branch out and do some bass and drums jams on our own time.

I play guitar as my primary instrument, and I have a teacher. I first played the violin, but I gave up on that after 5 years. I also play piano, and I just took up the cello. I want to get a ukulele next.
Oh, my main influences on guitar are Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, John McLaughlin, and Al Di Meola. Maybe some EitS influence, too. Edited by Arrrghus - February 15 2007 at 20:44 |

oh also forgot my influences: Al Di Meola, Allan Holdsworth, George Benson, Frank Gambale, Robben Ford (jazz and blues).. Oscar Herrero, Juan Serrano, Paco De Lucia & Juan Martin (flamenco)... though I'm mainly in a blues style I'm trying to practice on more complex harmonies and different scales (harmonic minor, diminished, etc)... also have some Hackett influence
Also just learning some flute and sax though at the time being I suck (more than I do on guitar) Edited by Chus - February 15 2007 at 20:54 |

Well I play bass and used to have sort of a band, but that was before I was into prog. We played some goofy Primus type sounding stuff. Now I don't have a band and just write music myself (you can check out the song I'm working on now in the thread titled "My Composition") I'm looking for people to play with that are talented and like the same music I do and the style of music I write. It's hard to find people like that here though, especially keyboard players Some of my material is also here: www.myspace.com/populationoverride

I mostly play keyboards/synths. Some drums, bass, and guitar as well, along with terrible vocals now and then.
I'm not sure if I'm prog. I tend to play noise and improvisation mostly...
