I have been using the Prog archives for some time now, but never noticed the forum until someone on another message board (Relapse) pointed it out.
I enjoy progressive thrash, some prog metal (even though most of it is formulaic and boring to me)....Lots of RIO (goddamn I LOVE this sub genre) and as much Avant Garde as I can get my hands on.  I also love experimental jazz, Technical Death metal and technical metal period.  I also enjoy some classical.  Most of my collection (now bordering on 900 cds and 350 cdrs) is mostly metal, but almost all of it is obscure.  I am obsessed with music.  I play a 6string John Myung Bass Guitar and an Ibanez guitar and have recently started playing piano again.  I have ideas to incorporate the wild playing of Orthrelm/Mick Barr with the beats of Aphex Twin at his most crazy....with insane samples and a little bit of The Residents thrown in for good measure.......but alas, I do not have all of the necessary equipment.  Speaking of Mick Barr, he just released a cd on Tzadik with him playing accompanied by a drum machine.  Lately I have been listening to Rope (from Chicago- Avant Jazz), Ephel Duath, The Residents, Thinking Plague, This Heat, and many more.................

Welcome!

Your username is very appropriate given the current discussion of songs about disasters in the non-music prog lounge. LOL

Welcome!

If you like Mick Barr I take it you're already all over the Flying Luttenbachers

If not, you'll want to get their recent album Cataclysm for certain.  Based on what you've said it's going to be right up your alley.
Soldato of the Pan Head Mafia. We'll make you an offer you can't listen to.

Unexpect?
OF COURSE!  I saw them last year on of their few US shows and got to hang out with them at a bar into the wee hours of the morning, discussing all things Canadian and musical.  Very cool people who put on an excellent show.  Their disc was my #2 disc for last year.  (right behind Martyr's "feeding the abscess" which just had to be #1)

I think I like your tastes and want  to learn more about most of them (specially the ones you mentioned in Avant Jazz thread)

What Camel, Rush, Opeth albums do you like?

the only Camel I own:
Mirage, a Live record  (both very good and I want more.....)

Rush:
2112, hemispheres, moving pictures, exit stage left, signals...(have not heard anything newer than the one with "roll the bones")

Opeth:
I am on the fence with these guys.  I have been listening to them since '99, so I am no stranger to their sound- which has its limits....even if it is brilliant!  But I think my favorite was their departure from their "usual" sound:  Damnation.
really I think a lot of them tend to blend together song for song and album for album and I really do not see it necessary to own them all.

what other bands are you interested in from my list?  ask away and I will try to be as concise and helpful as possible.....
