Now we're talking! This is the stuff that has kept me going, imho the modern avant-jazz scene is infinitely more interesting than the modern prog scene. Here's some of my favorite stuff involving electric guitar, in no particular order except that I think Tim Berne absolutely rules: Tim Berne - The Sublime And., Livein Cognito, Science Friction (guitarist on these albums is Marc Ducret who is a MONSTER, especially on Sublime, which is easily my favorite of the above) Electric Masada - At the Mountains of Madness and 50th Birthday Celebration Volume 4 (Zorn's great electric project, rippin' guitar from Marc Ribot, very electric Miles like) Bar Kokhba Sextet - 50th Birthday Celebration Volume 11 (maybe my favorite Zorn/Masada project ever, gorgeous stuff! Ribot again on guitar) Damsel - Distressed (featuring Nels Cline along with Zach Hill from Hella) Cline/Parkins/Rainey - Ash and Tabula Aka Moon - Elohim (really great and accessible Belgian electric jazz group, this album includes Marc Ducret) Crimetime Orchestra - Life is a Beautiful Monster (10-piece big band electric fusion blowout, seriously intense stuff) Rova::Orkestrova - Electric Ascension (an even more intense big-band electric blowout, this time a modern interpretation of Coltrane's famous album. features Nels Cline on guitar) Pat Metheny & Ornette Coleman - Song X (a classic! Metheny fans flipped their sh*t when they heard this one, some of this stuff is very noisy and intense; I love it) xmarsx - xmarsx (very tuneful, accessible modern avant-fusion) |

Best thread ever...
Guitars? Elliott Sharp, David Torn, Marc Ducret with Tim Berne (already mentioned) and solo (not mentioned yet, I think), Last Exit (Sharrock, Brotzmann, Laswell, Jackson), Derek Bailey's cooperation with Brotzmann et al. on "Nipples"... there's also a guy called Bern Nix who played guitar for Ornette Coleman, I haven't heard his music, but it might be worth checking out... James "Blood" Ulmer deserves a mention here... Also, while not really 'aggressive', highly recommended for its creativity - Joe Morris, "Age of Everything" : http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=13125 No guitars in these, but still: Huseyin Ertunc Trio: http://www.fusetronsound.com/index.php?whomlab=BarnRe-leasing Max Roach & Anthony Braxton http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=15106 (though you're probably well familiar with Braxton...) I think that's The Giant Pin....although your title for it may be better! It is an excellent record, although personally I marginally prefer their other album, Instrumentals. Edited by Mascodagama - March 04 2007 at 05:39 |

It's very good stuff. Anybody who fancies buying the album might want to go to Wayside Music, where it's on clearance for $4. Edited by Mascodagama - March 04 2007 at 05:47 |

Although I'm hardly an expert in the field of Avant-Jazz, I agree with
progreviews that you should check out Aka Moon. If you want guitars,
you could start with their album Guitars. My favourites are their
self-titled debut album, In Real Time and the aforementioned Guitars.

I would recommend Taylor's Free Universe. Some of their works are too avant and too free form for me to enjoy to the full, but I am slowly getting into it. It's demanding but very rewarding listening. I am no expert in free form music, but judging by experts opinions TFU is one of the best modern free-jazz around. Give it a try.

Well, if you're looking for a Frith recommendation, Fred Frith - Accidental is a very good and very dissonant album. I wouldn't call it avant jazz though. I haven't really heard anything that frith that I would directly call avant jazz. |

Electric Masada - At the Mountains of Madness and 50th Birthday Celebration Volume 4 (Zorn's great electric project, rippin' guitar from Marc Ribot, very electric Miles like) This is a must.
Also Don Cherry
Iva Bittova ( I discovered her a few months ago and she is mind blowing)

I ordered a couple of Nels Cline Singers albums, including The Giant Pin from their label Cryptogramophone at Venice Beach LA, about a year ago. This was after a Nels Cline interview on BBC Radio 3 and a sample aired from Instrumentals. A good price and delivery is the fastest ever I've had from the USA. And Cryptogramophone, threw in a sampler CD for nothing. The sampler is a gold mine for other avant jazz musicians. |

I've now got several copies of that sampler, as they seem to chuck one in with any chunky order...must get round to listening to it

Here is something I have been listening to a lot since it was posted on mutant-sounds blog. Not guitar orientated, I usually prefer jazz this way; most likely because I used to play trumpet.
Not too much information about the album. Reform Art Unit-Impressions ,LP,1978 , Austria(NWW List!) Improvisation/free jazz band from Austria. members: Anthony Braxton Fritz Novotny Muhammad Malli Paul Fickl Walter Schiefer Clifford Thornton Heinz Jδger 1978 – September 30 http://mutant-sounds.blogspot.com/search?q=reform+art+unit+-+impressions+three+motions+1978 http://www.advancedpoetx.com/RAU/rau00i.html |
