I bought anELP book: Edward Macanīs  "Endless Enigma"; thatīs just amazing as complete and comprehensive it is. Highly recommended not just for ELP fans but also for progressive rock ones in general.
Didnīt manage to catch it, but there was an ELP tribute at an italian radio few days ago (Ghostrider, did you noticed that?).

I read Macan's book, and it's a very interesting analyse of ELP's music. I also read Keith Emerson's autobiography " Picture of an Exhibitionnist", It's fun to read.

As a hardcore ELP fan, I recently bought "pictures of an exhibitionist" (it was in barnes and noble!) and "Endless Enigma"
Both are fascinating.
I hope to find more literature concerning this incredible band!

ever hear the saying.. silence is worth a  thousand words hahah... oh well...  Raff and I  decided to put Palmer in AR for the same reason even though he should be in symphonic as well..  They're in.. that's what counts I guess..

Tarkus.. is simply... wow... so far advanced over what many groups ever did.  What I call one of the rarified... 'Oh Sh*t!' songs upon one's first listen.

for me... The Barbarian...  that just gets me everytime I hear it...  ahhh...

*grabs CD and puts in*

"Tarkus" is a masterpiece, pure and simple. People who like sl*gging ELP off seem to forget the sheer prog brilliance of that track, which packs just about everything in the space of 20 minutes. Out-of-this world keyboard work, atmospheric guitar, masterful drumming, and THAT voice...HeartClap Pity the rest of the album isn't on the same level, though (talk about 'flawed masterpiece'...LOL).

As to the majestic "The Barbarian", for me it was love at first hearing... And then, it is someone's own theme song!EmbarrassedWink

Tarkus IS a game of two halves, agreed. Some of the 2nd side is first class- Bitches Crystal and The Only Way- the other tracks range from OK- A Time and a Place- to awful- the 'comedy' numbers. I think the one unequivical masterpiece they made was probably 'Trilogy', but 'Benny The Bouncer' aside, 'Brain Salad Surgery' is their quintessential album-but their first 5 albums and the Emerson Lake and Powell get lots of airings from me.

You know, I kinda starting buying into all that bit about Emerson not being too bright. Then after reading Pictures I was so impressed with his writing, I came to realize that I had been right all along.  The man is brilliant.:)

And those piano bits they did, Take a Pebble, Trilogy and Second Impression are some really nice music regardless of what enyone says. :P

I have the new Macan book but its been sitting on my shelf.  I read through it but maybe I should go dust it off

signed,

another unapologetic ELP fan.

I saw Bruford recently and he said that Bob Fripp always has about 6 minutes of music written when he decides to get a band going.  It was that way with Discipline and Lark's Tongues, where he had written all of Part I and some of Part II.  I said, "That's why all his albums only have six minutes of good music. " (re: Exposure where he redid the Gabrial tune and then gave us 15 minutes of Frippertronics.) If you like ELP you like the filler stuff.  Most of its not that bad, Tarkus is probably the exception. But Benny the Bouncer does not take away from the majesty of Karnevil 9 no matter how you slice him.

I love 'Benny The Bouncy'. It is a well crafted bar room esque song! No way is it filler!

Couldn't agree more. "Karn Evil 9" is one of the greatest (prog) suites ever. "Benny" is a fun little track but I usually skip over it. 3/4 of ELPowell is damn good sh*t!
