So in my prog. music experience Ayreon is the artist that takes concept albums to the most ridiculous, outrageous levels.  Are there other bands who do anything similar to him?

Dream theater's "Scenes from a memory". While the music was kinda nice, the lyrics/concept were...LOLLOLLOLLOL

A lot of prog is ridiculous, that's why we're all so damn interested.

Check out Arcturus.

Well....

Sadly, CryCry, you're kind of right.... The best album ever has one of the most ridiculous, cheesy stories ever.... But it's one case I really don't care. Big%20smile

I think you've never heard anything written by Luca Turilli, so it seems. After having some Luca Turilli or Rhapsody, you're ready to go fight demons, dragons and evil lords armed with just a sword and a shield... and you have trilogies, tetralogies that easily could be made into the LordOfThe Rings part II in terms of size!

I, for one, like Ayreon's stories very muchEmbarrassed.

That's correct.   For 'bad' ridiculous I would say Cynic's 'Focus' comes to mind or a little outfit called Copernicus. For 'good' ridiculous, bands like Von Zamla and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

Yeah, Rhapsody is completely ridiculous. The music is great (at least for me). but those stories, especially when they make a saga that go through 4 albums...

I think  that's great. I had a few Turilli videos a while back and always meant to look into more. I like dragons and sorcerous tales. AND i'm not embaressed about it.

Anyway, the acme of ridiculous prog was perpetrated upon us by one Jon Anderson on the Yes album Tormato. It's called 'Circus of heaven' and it is ghastly silly.

For the most part, Ayreon can be over the top and cheesy, but I think Arjen hit a home run with the story for THE....just an opinion Tongue

Rhapsody is actually one of my favourite bands, but about the videos, i think their videos were ridiculous. i haven't seen or heard Turilli solo project though

I have to second Ayreon as well; I've only heard "The Human Equation", but that was plenty enough for me.

first thing to come to mind would beGenesis/Phil Collins stuuf, lyrically that is. Songs like A Trick of the Tail or All in a Mouses Night or Robbery, Assault and Battery, and especially that one with the cowboy dude, Big Jim, what's the name of that again, can't bother to go look for it on the cd.

Excellent point. What WERE they thinking of? I love every single tune on TRICK OF THE TAIL, but there's only so much you can do with simple fairy tales. After PG left, Genesis stopped sounding OMINOUS, and it's our loss.

If there was a "ridiculous prog" genre, Primus would be the first in there :P

most of the bob drake avant projects across the globe are nothing more than circuses. SGM too.

whereas naming Henry Cow as ridiculous... IS ridiculous. ;) I hope whoever mentioned them gives them another try.

Gong and Mother Gong are sometimes pretty ridiculous, but on purpose. Hawkwind could be pretty ridiculous on purpose too, especially with Robert Calvert on board. His solo albums are pretty ridiculous too.
Ridiculous on a negative scale: Eloy. Their pomposity is totally serious, but the result is totally ridiculous.
And the humour of Amon Düül 2 is sometimes very ridiculous too. On their first album "Phallus Dei" their humour borders on tastelessness even (in "Dem Guten, Schönen, Wahren" and "Henriette Krötenschwanz").
