The Boss range does seem superior to other makes including Zoom which sound rather digital - i have seen many semi-pro guitarists with boxfuls of Boss pedals - i use a CH-1 Chorus, AC-2 Acoustic simulator and MT-2 Metalzone all in a little case with a transformer - they sound fantastic! i also have a Boss SE-70 - an amazing little box of tricks!

I've never got on with Boss pedals they always seem to breakdown about 1 month after the warranty ends, however my electro-harmonix pedal has never let me down

I'm a big fan of line 6 stuff. Their POD XT is quite versatile. Also, the roland midi pickups are really cool. Try playing one sometime. It's so much fun.

I own a PODXT live, and I have played with many Line 6 amps, and I personally feel they are the worst both the worst Items I have ever touched. Though myself I play jazz, blues, and space/art rock, I can see it being good if you're going for a harder sound. |

There are many, but the MXR Distortion+ is an excellent choice, and is probably the one responsible for the sounds on most 70's recordings. You'll find that most of the very expensive "boutique" distortions are not designed to provide all of the distortion on their own. They are typically designed to overdrive an already crunchy amp... |

Now thats a tough pedal. I bought an MXR unit in '88 and it was old then. The thing is still kicking around doing its thing. and I mean kicking, I used to unplug it and kick it over to the bassist across the garage floor. I swear you could throw that thing through a brick wall and it would come out just fine. A real pedal from an age where guitars were made of wood, and men of iron.  |

The Boss GT-8 was a big disappointment. I've used Boss pedals for years. I've given up buying commercial stuff now, and just build my own. The closest I come to commercial effects is using three Morley pedal mechanisms on my effects board - one for volume, one for wah-wah or pedal phasing and the last for parameter control - for the speed of a phaser or the drive to the distortion circuits.
Most of the commercial pedals are rubbish, and the "boutique" ones are just a rip off. |

Well the bottom end of Zoom's multi effects are that good, and I can see how you like the GT-6 way more (although to be honest, I think even the GT-8 could have sounded better, which hopefully is rectified in the GT-10 coming soon), but I suspect you have not heard the Zoom G9.2tt. It just sounded noticeably more realistic than the GT-8, and the top of the line Digitech multi effects (the GNX4 I think the name is), still couldn't compete with the G9.2tt. Plus, the G9.2tt cost 200 AUD$ less than the GT-8. But if the hype surrounding the GT-10 is anything to go by, it should be very good

but seriously, the MXR D+ is a great recommendation ..I also used to hear good things about the old Ibanez Tube Screamer frankly, I always ended up with a much better, richer and more diverse overdrive from adjusting a good amp till it sounds how you like it Edited by Atavachron - February 09 2008 at 02:25 |

How could I forget the Rat? The bass player in my last band used one of those in conjunction with an old Morley power wah. Great scary sound, kinda reminiscent of Wetton's Red-era work... |
