I just want to ask what do you think about where each one of these bands is located here in PA. I just heard one album of each band (Black Holes for Muse, Catch without arm for Dredg) . Maybe that's not enough to give an informed opinion, but anyway, I was checking some reviews for Muse and they said this album was the less prog by them, though I found it very prog, so I guess the rest (I just bought Absolution) will be even proggier. Now, I've read this album by Dredg is prog, but for me it truly wasn't What's your opinion about this: I think Muse could perfectly well fit in the Art Rock category, it has a lot of prog elements (and even though that album is supposed to be their least prog), but I also think Dredg is not prog, or at least should only be included in Prog-related. But like it is is the exact opposite. What do you think? Or are other albums by Dredg so much proggier? I may be so wrong, so please correct me if that's so.

well, for the record, Catch Without Arms is by far their least prog effort, perhaps try to listen to El Cielo. I wouldn't mind Muse in Art Rock but I don't feel compelled to get them in ASAP and wouldn't be at loss if they stayed in prog related

I agree with how it is now. Catch Without Arms is definately Dredg's least progressive and is only borderline art rock. Muse, although one of my favorite bands seems to me to fit perfectly in the prog-related category. Their music has a progressive tinge to it, but is appartenly most dictated by British Rock from the mid/late 90s...and Queen

Muse are really wonderful, but not Prog. I think it's best to keep them in Prog Related.

I think Muse should stay where they are in Prog-Related.

About Dredg, though, I'd agree with you based on what I've heard (El Cielo and Catch Without Arms). I'm not sure there's enough to justify their inclusion in Art Rock. They'd probably fit better as prog-related. This is particularly true if they continue in the less-proggy direction of Catch Without Arms in future albums.

Muse are prog related for me, and are probably one of the acts that best define that genre.

pretty much similar with the Gabriel stirr you've made, Mr. T, you've heard an album that speaks you a different language. only that this time you want something out of Art Rock into related.

Dredg aren't impeccable at pure art rock feeling, that's why they must be in for a totally different reason. And that reason a very interesting find of prog and dominant rock in the alternative, heavy and core material you least expect.

I for one support Dredg in AR, not heard Muse.

Muse is a great band though not prog enough to be in art rock.  Let's keep them in prog-related.

While I'm at it, I would say the same about Radiohead.

Never heard anything by Dredg, but I'll get around to it.

Yes they are, CwA is their worst and least prog album.

I don't know about Muse though.

"Art Rock" ... the label is kind of misleading in the archives. It is not used as a genre, but as an alias for "Miscellaneous Prog", and Dredg really fit in that context. As a genre they don't fit - King Crimson is the key band, and Dredg don't sound anything like them. But neither do Rush, so I guess it's ok.Smile

That is the main problem. We of the team (especially Micky and I) have tried multiple times to effect a name change in order to make things clearer for site users - but to no avail, or so it seems.

BTW, you might remember that I had suggested the definition "Eclectic Prog" instead of Art Rock - however, for reasons that I still don't understand, people seemed to dislike it.

Seriously, I think "Eclectic prog" doesn't sound right. The word eclectic itself is not a common word for many people so maybe some would be lost... Art rock sounds better I think.... Even though the genre is too free-for-all, but anyway... I've heard Muse's ABSOLUTION now and I stand by my position: it's proggier than expected, it's as prog as Radiohead.... it's incoherent that Radiohead is in Art Rock, and Muse isn't . Talking about something else, man it's true that Stockhold Syndrome sounds like Panic Attack from the New York MAster Band!

Dredg, on the other hand... I shouldn't have talked about them 'cause I've only heard CATCH, but the rest of their output has to be SERIOUS PROG in order for them to be in Art Rock... Are those albums that much proggier? Because CATCH truly isn't prog, and I would say it isn't even prog-related.

Yeah Ive been saying the same for Phish. Maybe it's because I thought they really revived progressive ideals in the early 90s with their off the wall jazz/fusion/funk/rock/weirdness. I don't think Muse or Dredg are nearly as prog as phish used to be in the early days of their prime and they're still in prog related. Ehhh whatever. It doesn't affect my life that much.

I think Muse barely even deserve a place here in related. dredg are 100% prog, you just listened to the wrong album. Personally I prefer Leitmotif, but everyone else on the archives thinks El Cielo is the best. Regardless, you just picked the wrong album.

Of the 4 studio albums Muse have done the second and fourth ones (Origin and Black Holes) have more prominent keyboards. That maybe leads people into thinking they could be art rock. The debut (Showbiz) is mostly a straight rock album while Absolution (their best IMO) is actually alternative rock..although the track Butterflies and Hurricanes is very proggy.

Hope I've not added to the confusion. Big%20smile

Dredg is great... Catch Without Arms is a really really enjoyable album.

Dredg is more prog than Muse, imo. But not by a ton...

EDIT: I dont know what I  was thinking. Confused I'd say muse is more prog, they have the biggest consistency of prog [tendencies] in their albums
