help: record wows and sways

   Hello,

i bought a steve howe LP, 'the Steve Home Album', and i noticed that durng the last song on side B there is a very noticeable wowing and swaying of the sound, you can hear it clearly because the strings are playing long unvibrated notes.. (or they're supposed to be unvibrated ;)  the wow and sway go in sync with the sway of the physical vinyl as the hole is not in dead centre

Anyway, this is the first record that i've had this problem with, so i guess it's somehow an unlikely problem. Or what's your enlightened guess, is there anything that can be done about it (e.g. tweak my player a bit), or do you think it's likely, as i haven't noticed this problem with other records, that it's just this particular record that's wasted..?

	Back in the days of vinyl this wasn't all that uncommon. However, in those days you caould just take the record back to the shop and they'd replace it for you. Without that option you;re pretty much out of luck. you coulkd try for a refund or do as I used to simetimes do; fill the hole with epoxy and try to re-drill it on center. With a little care and luck you can sometimes save the record from skeet practice.

	sounds like just that particular record to me. I just threw my copy of that vinyl on and there is definatly no vibrato on the strings in that band.. IF its really that important to you for whatever reason I suggest looking for another copy. The chance of damaging the grooves while you epoxy and drill is probably pretty good and that might end up being more annoying than the wow and flutter on that one song. If ya do drill and it screws up you have one more chance, you can upsize the hole to 45 rpm size and use an adaptor. let us know if you try drilling and how it works (or doesn't). as a vinyl lover im very interested.

	the slightest deviation of the spindle hole from dead centre will affect playback in the way you describe, though up and down movement, such as in a warp, will hardly affect it at all. if you can live with the problem, all well and good, otherwise there's nothing you can do
