Try "Lucky Man" by ELP, very simple chords (they must be if I can play it).
G D in the verse and Am Em in the chorus (I think).
Can't help you with the synth solo though.Smile

Agreed, I've been playing for nearly a decade now (saying that really makes me feel older than I am) and to be honest I can't play any songs all the way through except Empty Spaces by Pink Floyd and Apache by The Shadows Embarrassed, mainly this is because I'm not very good technically and can't play fast enough for most rock solos and after a while I find blues gets too repetative.

However I am good at improvising and writing my own material (albiet slightly limited because I can't remember scales bar minor ones) and would prefer to do that than play something written by someone else.

My advice is to learn how to play basic stuff like chords then learn a few scales and start improvising and writing your own material, I find it much more satisfying than learning how to repeat a song parrot fasion

Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" is quite easy as well. As Mike says, you won't find too many prog songs that are easy to play.

I second that.  If someone else already plays a song let them play it.

There are a few things that are proggy but simple enough;

'Hey You'   Floyd
'Dazed and Confused'   Zep
..and some riffs like 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' by Yes

Well I agree with the two that say write your own stuff. Heres my story, it may shock you. Ive been in at least one band for the last 3 years, and I've written over 50 2:00+ songs over the last 3 years. The only famous songs I have actually played before ( I know I can play thousands of them, but these are the ones I've actually played.)

Horse With No Name - America (2 chords, easy easy stuff)
Smoke on The Water - Deep Purple (need I say more?)
Absolutely Free - The Mothers of Invention (a bunch of chords, but very slow)
then I started writing my own material.

But if you want to play famous songs, I recommend you do those three in that orded because if you think about it, the first teaches you basic chords, the second teaches you to play frets and the third teaches you moreintermediate chords.
Beauty will save the world.

Porcupine Tree's Shallow is pretty easy and fun to play. Most of Chain Sling by Pain Of Salvation is pretty easy too.

My suggestion is that you locate and purchase a chord book of some songs you know and learn those first.  If you can tolerate any folk artists that would be best because they are easier to master and you won't get discouraged early on.  Bob Dylan is good because the chords are basic and I doubt that anyone will think the songs are beneath them.
