I remember last year's top 5 list of prog albums and there were some members that complained because the list looked "too safe". Most of the bands were known prog acts and their sound wasn't pretty demanding. With this year, things changed and I have to say for the better.
It isn't healthy to stay inside our homes where everything is nice and warm. Sometimes we have to go outside, explore and get ourselves dirty! |

I agree with most of this Top 10... Exceptions: Tool and and Mars Volta. Not my cup of tea and I think that these both albums are very irregular...
And... WHERE IS RED SPAROWES - EVERY RED HEART SHINE TOWARDS THE SUN??? |

^Red Sparowes "Alone and Unaware" is listed at number 26 according to
Tony R's post on the previous page. But that's just the name of the
first track from At the Soundless Dawn (the band's 2005 release), right?
At least Every Red Heart, specifically, made Avestin's list (in about number 30). As it's only rated 3.50 at this site (click), I wouldn't have expected it to be high on the collab's list. |

^ Really, I just meant about 30 down the list. I had noted that Red Sparowes is part of an alphabetically ordered section. I had figured your top ten would show some preference, as it becomes more alphabetically listed after that.

Well, actually the first 3 are my favourites and after that it's 5-6 randomply ordered but also highly rated and the others, I jst couldn't remember all, so I went by A-B...
Anyway, Deluge Grander and Nemo are two great albums. Also check out the previous incarnation of Deluge Grander with Dan Britton called Cerebus Effect and their Acts of Deception album. As for Nemo, check all their albums. Pretty constant in their output (quality wise). |

also MINDGAMES' Actors in a Play is the best NEO album from 2006 so far. Yep, Assaf, majority is always possessed with "the-ones-everyone-knows" and I wonder what prevents it from digging deeper. I, the Ukrainian student, have enough desire, money and time to find the ones I want to (or just maybe I'm the happiest person on Earth?) .I expressed some thoughts considering that problem in "emperor's new clothes"-thread... ON MY "TO GET" LIST - Steve Hackett - Wild Orchids(soon!!!) Deluge Grander - August in the Urals(soon!!!) PFM's new one Red Sparowes - Every Red Heart Shines Towards the Sun Marygold – The guns of Marygold Mono – You are there NeBeLNeST - ZePTO Nemo - Si partie I Isis – In the absence of truth ... |

Any chance we can see the complete list of nominees and their ranking? Only one of my 2006 acquisitions made it to the top 10 (Wild Orchids) and I'm really curious how well some of my favorites that didn't make the list did.

I also have a prpoblem with Kayo Dot as progmetal, but Avant prog certainly not.
I think more of KD as a mix of drone metal ala Sun O)))) and Post Rock ala Sigur Ros.
And I think their first was much better also
As for the rest, I believe that Amputecture gets placed too low, but my #1 choice Nebelnest did not show as I expected it to.

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Just because I don't care for them doesn't mean that I don't want anyone else to enjoy them. I'm glad people dig their music; they're just not for me. E |

The new Blackfield album, though "only" Prog-Related, is wonderful. Absolutely stunning!!
Will be high on my list for 2007... |

*passing the buck* It's Ghandi [sic for my lame purposes] 2's fault, he said it before me! If in doubt, always blame the second coming of Mahatma Gandhi. He-he, ho-ho. "Evolution of democracy is not possible if we are not prepared to hear the other side" (random Gandhi quote). "Gandhi didn't believe in that stupid stuff anyway, since he was a Buddhist" (Ghandi 2 quote). But seriously, you're right. Post-rock (or post-metal) is more apt for Kayo Dot. I said it could be in various categories utilising various Prog subgenre tags. Art Rock sprung to mind first since the band is quite eclectic in terms of inspiration (but then Prog usually is), but with the latter release I'm inclined to say it's more fart than art. However, I do think KD show significant avant Prog tendencies, particularly in the band's, I think, debut album (which is why I thought the tag fit). I'm more familiar with the debut over the subsequent one, as I have only casually heard the second one once at an acquaintance's house as background noise and subsequent listening of samples. You mention Nebelnest, I have yet to hear the whole album, but from what I have heard I prefer it to either KD album. I must say, I was rather surprised to see KD's album take it since I thought their debut so much better. Amputechture did nothing good for me, but chacun a son gout. One man's meat is another man's poison and one man's fish is another man's poisson, as I like to say. I like Avestin's list. I have several of those albums and have sampled most of them and consider them to be excellent (still don't know Deluge Grander -- a big oversight as I've been meaning to check out their samples for some time -- not in the archive yet, are they?). I would have predicted that Gargamel's album (the first album of 2006 I heard -- or was Hamster Theatre my first?) to get into the top ten earlier in the year. Later I thought Maschera might take it (though I prefer the Gargamel). The Nemo one is very good, but I didn't expect it to make more than the top twenty. And of course, as I said, Zaar is my pick, but a close call. 'Twas a pretty good year year for Prog -- not up to 2003 (or 2005 or...) for my tastes from what I know, but then I probably don't know enough. There hasn't been one year from the late 60's on that doesn't have a Progressive album I know and love -- well maybe there is, but none that I'm aware of. ;) Edited by Logan - January 18 2007 at 14:12 |

I found it merely OK. A nice adult alternative style CD. I don't consider it Prog. That being said, I can't wait for the new PT! |

It's not Prog at all, I was referring to Blackfield's status here. I was unsure on first play but with a few spins I have grown to love it. I am not a big fan of the first album but this is a real classy affair and I urge you to give it a few more listens. |

For an alternate, non-collab (and possibly more representative?) view
on the Top albums of 2006, check out the Prog Archives list as voted by
ALL the site members with their reviews. TMV's Amputechture is #1 by a country mile.
http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?year=2006 Remember, the list on the front page is Collaborator generated, and thus voted on by old farts like me. My votes went to Prog stalwarts like Adrian Belew, Steve Hackett, Fish, and Peter Hammill. Edited by Cluster One - January 18 2007 at 18:24 |
