Topic: ELP re-issues, & general policy debate Posted: January 13 2007 at 14:26 |
ELP, or more precisely the owners of their copyrights, appear to have a habit of repackaging and re-issuing their live material.
One in particular, originally issued as "The and now", seems to be particularly vulnerable. As far as I can see, it is listed on this site as:
- Then and now
- The show that never ends
- Lucky man
- The best of Emerson Lake and Palmer (watch, there are at least 3 different albums with this title !)
- Emerson Lake and Palmer gold (a Retro release not listed on the site yet, but another variant)
I think some have most but not all of the tracks, perhaps in a different order. I'm looking for confirmation that they are all the same recordings, and suggestions on the best way to present them. The site policy is to only lsit an album with the same tracks once, so we don't really want new albums being added each time these recordings are re-packaged.
Thoughts?

I'll have a look, Bob, as I happen to own that album with the title of "Then and Now". Going to take the CD out of the tower now...

Checked it out against the others - they seem to have the same tracks, though the original "Then and Now" is longer and more complete than the rest. However, not having the other three albums in my collection, I don't know whether they also contain performances from Cal Jam '74 - that is, "Toccata", "Take a Pebble - Lucky Man - Piano Improvisations", and "KE9 - First/Third Impression".
The reviewer of "The Best of ELP Live" clearly states at the end of his review that this is the same album as "Then and Now"... So, perhaps we could start by deleting this one, and wait until we have other info on the other two.

Bob, I have "The Show That Never Ends" and there's very little information on when and where it was recorded - it just says it was recorded on the "Then and Now" tour in the late 90s, so it could well be the same recordings as the "Then and Now" CD. I have seen a couple of CDs with a very similar track listing.

I have to admit, I have had suspicions about the amount of times this recording has popped up. I think they ARE all the same recordings- I have a naturally suspicious nature when it comes to compilations, to be honest.

Thanks for the responses so far guys.
I'm in two minds as to whether such albums should be listed separately. They are slightly different for straight re-issues and re-masters, as they have different names.
By listing them separately, people will find them more easily. We could put notations in the album information referring to the other releases of the same source music.
I'm thinking for example of someone coming to the site for information on the "Lucky man" CD. They would not see it listed, and would not know to look at "Then and now" for the info.
What do you think?

I agree with you, Bob. After all, the tracks included may be almost the same, but the listing is different, and the different names complicate matters further. I think the idea of putting explanatory notes in the album description is excellent.

I reckon just one entry with the following title .... EMERSON, LAKE AND PALMER - "Then and now / The show that never ends / Lucky man / The best of Emerson Lake and Palmer (the one that is the same as Then And Now!) / Emerson Lake and Palmer Gold" Should cover it Seriously, I agree with Raffaella, who agrees with Bob .... a shame to have so many entries but seems the most sensible solution
