I second Hawkwind. Ideal driving music. Otherwise I use self-made samplers with songs I think ideal for driving, like "The Last Seven Minutes" by Magma or "Master Builder" by Gong.

As someone said in the thread that was just cut short, my car is my sactuary, as well. That's where I do my primary listening. I do have most of my stuff uploaded to iTunes at work, but how seriously can you listen there? And with a 4 year old tearing around the house, I usually put on a DVD when she goes to bed.

For the car, anything by Marillion sounds great. Neal Morse also gets a steady rotation. Lately, however, I've been playing the new Camel discs I've been getting, plus Pain Of Salvation's The Perfect Element and Remedy Lane.

Depends on my mood.  I like to play music that resembles how I feel as opposed to using it to get me in a different mood.  Cars are good, but more for background stuff as I am supposed to be concentrating on my driving. 
 
For getting somewhere quick, some metal suits: Pantera, cog, Devin Townsend et al (thou not Tool - I actually drive slower with them as Im always trying to listen to what they are doing, thou Lateralis is a fave in the car)
 
A long drive would consist with a series of Kraut, balanced with those with driving beats (pardon the pun) like can, to popul vox and tangerine dream, to enjoyable pieces like 'tanz der lemmange', all mixed together in a soup.
 
If im not wanting to go to where I am going: post rock is a treat. () gets wide playing in this case, thou I've recently discovered Explosions in the sky.  'the earth is not a cold dead place' is pleasant and not too taxing to the ears (im driving remember), and Im open for anywhere to listen to 'the rescue' ep.
 
Non prog faves (depending on mood) include 'kind of blue' - miles daves; and 'welcome to the big bigot' - severed heads.......    et al.
 
Many other albums are welcome.

Tha Allman Brothers Live At The Filmore is one of the great driving albums of all time - mind you, if you have the expanded edition, 45 minutes is barely long enough to listen to 'Mountain Jam'

Agreed. Music is and always has been for different moods, in my opinion. However, the only cassettes I have in my car are 4 from Supertramp, one of Nirvana Live, No More Tears from Ozzy, and a Kate Bush, so my playlist rotates between those fairly often.

I don't drive, but while in the passenger seat and asked to put music, I always put some Mars Volta, or Tool. (because my others favourite bands tends to annoy the driver, or send me too far away lol)
