I say this amazing post rock band last night at a local cofee shop. Called Small Life Within. They had a sitarist and a violinist and I had a great time. Local music is always fun. My caused them to start by playing them A Silver Mount Zion. How cool is that!

I wish there was more music like that here in Puerto Rico. Most of the new bands are emo, metal or cover bands that play modern day hit singles. It isn't really interesting, but they're good party music.

A sitar and a violin duo sounds very intriguing myself being a big fan of the sitar sound. What did they sound like?

Also, I didn't quite understood the last sentence of your post.

i just got this s/t album by a Chicago-school-of-postrock group called Directions In Music, featuring former Tortoise bassist Bundy K Brown.  Well its not a new album (released in 96) but those who love their postrock sounds in the vein of Aerial M, Slint or pre-TNT Tortoise this one is for you!!!

Here's a possible addition to postrock: The Italian band LARSEN.
Saw them at the Safe as Milk Festival in Haugesund, Norway, late last summer. Perhaps not always the most innovative postrock band imo, but still nice, and their use of the accordion makes up an interesting sound. Like a mix between Godspeed and Swans. One of their albums was produced by Michael Gira and released on Young God records. They have also released albums on Important records.

In Norway Larsen is a common family name. In the rest of the world it is the name of a mystical and enigmatic band from Turin, Italy. Our opinion is that they are no doubt the most interesting post-rock band in the whole world right now. They have been remixed by the norwegian producer Deathprod and together with Xiu Xiu they make up the collaborative project XXL. Their music is grand and abstract, like a mix of Goodspeeds epic qualities and Swans dark elegance.

Thank you, chamberry. Maybe it's actually a really distorted guitar that I'm hearing. Anyway, now I can still use eMusic, unless there's some packaging that's just so awesome I can't possibly miss it.

What in the hell is the cover of Mr. Beast? Seriously, it's starting to creep me out.

BePink, if what you're doing can accurately be called noise and drone, then you shouldn't be surprised most people would dislike it. I'm fairly prog, but I don't think I would like it: all I've heard of drone is 3 really long notes played over and over again and noise is...noise.

at ghandi. Drone music really is not like that at all. Drone music simply means that the music has a constant "drone" going on in the music. The idea was developed greatly by Charlie Parker, and you can image that he did NOT just play three really long notes.

Droning gives you amazing creativity ability, because really, there aren't wrong notes...

So if i tune my cello to DADA(i usually do this or another form of I,V,I(8),V(8) )

i can keep that drone (DA..or just D) and go crazy everywhere else, with other musicians creating riffs and ideas around that, and it all melds together.

 

WIth noise music, it is just a lounder, harsher version of what guys like Sigur Ros are doing. its about the mood and emotion rather then the music itself. Its main goal is to create mood, not music, jsut the same as in post rock. However their means of getting there are a little more intense. But it's all relative. I think when a drummer beats the sh*t out of his drums in a 3/4 waltz, while the bass player slaps his bass with drum sticks, the guitarist plays tremolo riffs over and over again, the cellist plays long crecendoing and diminuendoing glissandos, one vocals lays on the floor and groans into the microphone, and another reads poetry, it is beautiful.
I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

I definitely agree with you about the drone side of things. Though I think the biggest problem is a lot of people get mixed up with the two different styles. I think the three drawn out notes style would be linked with the metal side of things (which I personally do find to be to my tastes).

I would have loved to see the concert, drone and noise are two things that really need to be heard live to understand what the bands are about. Over here in Australia and New Zealand we have a quite healthy scene (post-rock, drone, noise), I was lucky enough to see the band "Birchville Cat Motel". Here is a picture from the concert to give people an idea of the emotions running through the place.

I wish we had more bands like that here. and you would figure that in long island, where there is a lot of people and diverse culture, there would be. But, sadly, there is not. :/

I only know some very few drone/ noise bands, but I wouldn't mind seeing them live. That would definitely be an excellent experience. Ambient artists would be cool to see as well, but most of those acts are from the Metro area of Puerto Rico, in the north of the island, where as I live in the south side and I don't have car or drivers license either.

One of my jobs at my college radio station is to mix sound for live bands in the studio on wednesday nights.  Last week we had a band called the Sad Cobras, who are pretty shoegaze-oriented, and at one point they were improving and I could've sworn they were GYBE.  It was utterly fantastic.  Their myspace is here, but they sound a bit more electronic in their recording than they were live.

I personally don't know of any. But it sounds like a great idea.
 
I mean there are plenty of guys( GY!BE and Bell Orchestre, ect) that play acoustic or organic instruments, but I think what you mean is acoustic guitars right?
 
I'd love to hear some if some of the more veteren listeners know of any.
