Ok boys and girls, here is a variation on the US presidents thread, with a slightly more positive gloss...
...who do you think has been the finest British PM over the past 100 years, and why???
Personally, my vote goes to Clement Attlee for setting up the welfare state in an attempt to slay the 5 social giants... "want, disease, squalor, ignorance and idleness"... for me, a great man coming to power at the right time...

land of pink & GREY. PM responisble for engaging republicanism and bringing them into NI peace process: that was a problem more intractable than nazi germany IMHO & one that was common to all the previous PMs. |

Who voted for Clement Atlee as well, the NHS was a true masterstroke. Churchill was an inspiring figure but it goes a bit far to call him the greatest briton. For one thing he was responsible for the disaster of Gallipoli. Furthermore he was not a particularly good peace time leader. Who voted for Margaret Thatcher, one of the worst prime ministers this country has ever seen. She ruined the economy e.g. Mining and sold off all of the national assets railroads etc. She was also responsible for the Falkland wars which were a disgrace. |

Calling Churchill the greatest Briton doesn't go too far in the least. I from memory serves me correectly, he won that title ina national poll a few years ago. Calling him responsible for Gallipoli is going too far though, when it is proven thhat it was bad leadership in the field (or well behind it) that was at faullt, and he wasn't PM at the time! And wether he was a good peactime leader is irrelevant compared to what he did for this country in WW2! |

I'm sorry Snowie, but Churchill had to take the wrap for Gallipoli; he was defence secretary, and it was almost entirely his plan, which was why he was dismissed in 1915. When he was trying to get back into parliament in the early 20's by standing in as a Tory candidate in the North East, he was booed out of the hall by a hostile crowd who incessantly shouted 'What about Gallipoli'... he had to leave the hall without getting a word in edgeways, and was pelted with vegetables, never to return.... feelings against him ran that high at the time...

Whatever Jared, this poll is about greatest PM, not pre PM life. No?  In 1915, Churchill was one of the political and military engineers of the disastrous Gallipoli landings on the Dardanelles during World War I. Churchill took much of the blame for the fiasco, but those responsible for the fiasco were actually the tactical commanders of the opening engagements. Edited by Snow Dog - January 04 2007 at 10:51 |

^^I agree, its about the poll is about the 'PM' part of his life; I'm not going to get into a wrangle with you over Gallipoli, but it's just that I think you have a slightly too rosy view of someone who showed brilliance in our hour of need, but was otherwise a deeply flawed character...

yes... the irony is that privatisation has continued apace under Blair, only matched for speed by the widening of the rich/poor social divide... it's really depressing how New Labour are carrying out the same liberalist policies as Mrs T, only in the garb of socialism...
