Anyway, Fah Zi is just saying that the band is not progressive and is not going to be interesting to prog fans, that they have a straightforward alternative metal sound. I think it could be helpful(and I agree BTW).

I'm not white, I'm hispanic. Approve

I don't know if the review would be helpful really. All I see is bashing the band instead of actually reviewing it. IMO the last paragraph is the only one that's informative and I don't have any problem with it. The numbered paragraphs aren't really convincing. #1 talks about how unprogressive they sound compared to POS and DT and we all know that not all progressive metal sounds like both bands. #2 Looks like letting out his frustrations because of Mastodon / DT conflict in an interview. #3, well, we all know that there's retro prog and it's still prog I guess there can be retro prog metal too although I don't know what he's really trying to say here. I think this one is also informative and it doesn't sound like bbashing.

So the way I see it we have half informative and a half bashing review.Confused

aside the aspect, you didn't made more than 30 words. the site asks 50, recently 75.

then, on the other hand, short reviews are okay in 100 words just as well. I don't mean anything than already said, try some more arguments to the five centric lines.

I was just joking (Flossy calls everybody a white n00b), but in all honestly I don't care whether or not the review stays or gets deleted. LOL

Shut up you white n00b, I do not call everyone a white n00b, just kidding with you guys on MSN

But anyways, my review on Mastodon was carefully thought out and I really dislike their addition to this site. Even though I really dislike their addition to this site does not mean they are bad. They are a fine Alternative Metal band, but I'd rate them accordingly to the site name and this is not Metal Archives, so such a review and rating is the correct answer in my mind.

By the way, only one member was joking about their comments towards Dream Theater and has since apologized to Mike Portnoy. But I felt to mention such a comment on the paper even when the person is joking or such is unprofessional.

You are completely missing the point.

Reviewing is a way of expressing one's opinion and, most importantly, describing the music - rather than voicing an opinion about inclusion of a band to the archives. For such purposes, the forums exist, so if you wish to hear the reasons why Mastodon are on the site, go ahead, start a topic and engage in a discussion.

It must have been a year or two since it was decided that reviews that stick to toothless remarks about a band "not being prog and not deserving to be represented on the website" and nothing else are deleted, I am honestly surprised that a long-term member like you has no idea of that.

the guidelines for rating speak of "progressive music", so he does have a point.
anyway i also think that rating extremely low something on the PA doesn't mean that the rated music is not progressive, but that it is progressive music of extreme low quality (blasphemy! LOL yes there is such) or that the certain compilation/bootleg etc. is an useless purchase.

5 stars Wonderful CD to SCARE THE sh*tE out of your neighbors!!!! Guys, guys guys-READ THE SMALL PRINT BEFORE BITCHIN'!!!!! You want cohesive stuff???-BUY A STUDIO CD!!!! Totally improvised- I have a question for all of you who poo-pooed this CD, can YOU actually improvise/come up with this kind of stuff??? Be honest!!! NO YOU CAN'T!!! You're fooling yourself if you think you can. I'm a graduate from Berklee in Boston who has played Bass/Stick for more than 20 years- I can play T Lev's stuff but Trey Gunn is WAY over my head most of the time!!! The beauty of the shredding taking place on this CD is that it takes REAL musicians to improvise like this, sure, it's easy to dismiss it as"anyone can play this kind of noise, duh". NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED OR FOR BEGINNERS-OR EVEN THE SEASONED FANS!!! I DO recommend this CD if you want total chaos, KC style. Great packaging ,as always. I give this a 5 star , because it takes some brass "cojones" to release this kind of CD, and also because , there's NOTHING out there that compares to this.

BTW, Patto lives!!!!

well you should really. it gives and extra dimension to the record.

Anyway if this is the quality of writing from a Berklee graduate, remind me not to send my kids to that school, I think kindergarten will educate them better.Tongue

Really!    Not only bad writing but a bad attitude. If you love ThrakAttack that's great, but convince me with glory not bitterness.

Wait, pointless and/or bad reviews can be edited and/or deleted? Huh...guess I shouldn't be writing that review for Thick as a Brick that spends six pages commenting on what a great guy Ian Anderson must be...

Pfweeewhhh - inpraiseoffolly managed to write an even longer review (on Spock's Beard  V) than ClemOfNazareth did a couple of months ago (on Misplaced Childhood).

Impressive, but I have to let it sink in a bit ...Confused

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART (AND THE MAGIC BAND) — Trout Mask Replica

Quote Review by greenback
SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Neo-Prog Specialist

1 stars This album is definitely VERY overrated! The songs are AWFUL! Many say it is very hard to acquire, but I wonder WHAT can be acquired? And if there was nothing to acquire? Indeed, where is the music here? Where is the melody, the structure, the finesse, the elaborated rhythm, the catchy character, the addictive parts? The Captain has a very bad voice, as being very negligent and nonchalant. Apparently, the music is absolutely not improvised; well, it is hard to believe! The guitar notes are dissonant, and it is so irrelevant and incoherent that it seems young kids of 6-7 years old play with their Fisher Price guitars in the basement! The tracks contain NO keyboards! The strongest point are the EXCELLENT elaborated drums, but unfortunately, the retarded electric guitars sounds and Vliet's irritating vocals kill everything that could be good on this record. The sound of the electric guitars is very gross, unrefined and primitive! Vliet is good and very funny with Frank Zappa, like on the "Bongo fury" album, but here he is pitifully insipid. Nevertheless, I've been able to find some rare better structured rhythmic parts, like on "Pachuco Cadaver" and on "Sugar' N Spikes". The bass, despite quite present, does not seem to make a definite catchy rhythm. The album has a strong experimental dissonant blues influence. 28 redundant tracks all sounding the same? That's TOO much! There are numerous pseudo humorous narrations a la EMINEM: this is not encouraging. Some crazy free sax parts contribute to give a CACOPHONIC character to this album! Frank Zappa speaks on "The Blimp". As improvised-like dissonant albums, I strongly prefer Pat Metheny - Song X, a complex free jazz album: at least, the album is technically outstanding and there is much more structure in the music! The best I can give is 1 well deserved star for the DRUMS here!

This probably reflects most people's first reaction to the album in question (mine too, I doubt many people dig it on first hearing) but should it be allowed to stand as a review?  Particularly where dealing with an album widely thought of as a classic, and which the reviewer knows is difficult / takes some getting into, it seems to me a little more caution is required before concluding "this is garbage" rather than "I don't get it / it's not for me".  The complaint about the lack of keyboards and the very off-base comparisons with Eminem and Pat Metheny don't give the impression that the reviewer has really engaged with this type of music.

It also has "at the end of the day, you'll be fine." Assuming that you don't listen to this album.

Greenback's review is fine. We're not going to intervene in reviews, jsut because they criticise an album. There are similar reviews for Close to the edge, Selling England etc.

Fair enough.  It was really the language used to express the criticisms that bothered me, but on refllection I was probably being too precious.  Anyway I've certainly no problem with anyone expressing their dislike of that or any record in itself, it takes all sorts...

It's way too long for anyone to read it indeed, but the guy has obviously put lots of work into it and should be rewarded, not reported as abuse.

Surely he put a lot of work into it as the every reviewer does as well, and i didn`t mean to report it as an abuse, but i personally think that both very short and way too looooong reviews are not good, extremes are never good for me, every person thinks different, i am one of those who everyday reads reviews (and like it) but when i saw that... i felt kind of annoying, who wants to read that Ouch.

That review is probably longer than the whole Velvet Room LOL
