Too much Rush in here.

Tiles is a band I've yet to see mentioned, what do you guys think of them. I only have Window Dressing and its a dull album to be honest, I'm wondering if the earlier albums are better.
Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

All of them are dull and derivative and unimaginative, however there are good songs on each album - less than half of each album is pretty good, but I am getting bored by them quickly.
IMO their Presents of Mind album is their best.

Most of my favourite bands are categorized as Art Rock on this site. RIO/Avant comes second, although that category might overtake Art Rock soon.

Yes there is. WHat do you guys think of Van Der Graaf Generator? I only have 2 albums H to He Who Am The Only One and Pawn Hearts. I think they are great. Could they be better than King Crimson? I think they just might be.

Just a  quick word from the queen of Art Rock herselfWink...

I'm very pleased to see that there are people who're getting more and more into this rather peculiar category (rather than subgenre). However, I would like to encourage all of you to explore other bands rather than the 'big ones' such as GG, VDGG, King Crimson and Rush - as much as I love all of them. As a matter of fact, I do agree with Sleeper when he says that there is way too much Rush in this thread. Everyone knows I love them to bits (just look at my nick and sig), but a quick look at the list of bands and artists included will tell you that there is far more to AR than the mighty Canadians. Some of the new bands that have been added are quite interesting indeed - check 90 Day Men, After the Fall, Nurt and Disen Gage - and more will be added once I get back on home turf.

I highly recommend After The Fall especially their "Knowledge" album.

However, I think they are more NEO than Art Rock....

Grumbling:

this thread looks more like a private conversation about a couple of bands than an appreciation thread of a certain category. Art Rock isn't a subgenre, it's a category. It's a category. It's a category!

I would like to see here some additional names (not too obvious ones). The discussed category includes a great amount of super-interesting groups and artists. But, seriously (for me personally), this thread as it is currently, just kills any interest to participate in...

To move this appreciation of rock I think Nurt is an awesome band and it is sad that they only came out with one album. I reviewed it a little while ago, so if you want to see my review (which I think is kinda weak but thats my opinion of myself) go ahead. They are a great polish band and I highly recommend them. I enjoy all the songs on the album but song 5 (Gdyby Przebaczac Mogli Wszyscy) being one of the top tracks on the album for me.

Just to name a few of lesser known bands (all from the earlier 70's) -- most of them released a little number of albums, but some of them are as strong as the albums of the "leaders" of the Art Rock category (King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Van der Graaf Generator -- I'm mentioning those whom I know well).

Marsupilami have only two albums -- the debut one (self-titled) is just superb (Thumbs Up). The second (Arena) is a little bit weaker but still a decent one.

Spring, Indian Summer, and Still Life (each one has only one, a self-titled, album) are well-known, I think. Opinions about them vary, but the acquaintance may be interesting.

Raw Material's Time Is... sounds (partly) like VdGG -- I like this album.

East of Eden's first two albums (the only real East of Eden albums), Mercator Projected and SNAFU, are both grandiose Thumbs UpThumbs Up.

We have that sub genre already. It's called neo-progressive (not trying to start anything, I happen to LOVE Marillion and IQ

no-no, Modern Prog have nothing common with Neo (as I understand them both...).Try to search for my topics on MODERN PROG to get what I mean

On Topic: I discovered BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST!
