Circumstances is the only "weak" track if you can even call it that. If you like that, maybe try A Farewell to Kings, with the excellent Xanadu and epic Cygnus X-1 (beware: cheese alert) and a few more straightforward in between tracks

You are a true progressive rock fan. Wanting a band but despising the commercial. Hemispheres is a great album my favorite and A Farewell To Kings, two great albums. Rush should have stayed here a bit longer but they did not. I would go for these two albums. They are the albums I play the most. YYZ is a great instrumental (as all Rush instrumentals are) La Villa Strangiato on Hemsipheres is a great instrumental. Better than YYZ, imo.

I had to mention this about A Farewell to Kings. It is possibly the best Rush album ( I think Hemispheres is a tiny bit better, but I could be wrong). It has two great long tracks. The first is Xanadu, influenced by the Kubla Khan. A great 11 minute track. The second is the fabled Cygnus X-1, an amazing 10 minute track that has only been topped by Cygnus X-1 Book II, in Hemispheres. A Farewell to Kings also has great tracks as Closer To The Heart and A Farewell to Kings. Both are amazing songs, even though they are shorter.

I also forgot to mention the song Cinderella Man, a great song based on the movie Mr. Deeds Goes To Town.

Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings are the 2 essential Rush albums. The Cygnus songs are amazing!

Don't forget Xanadu. That is an amazing track that is often overlooked by the almighty Cygnus X-1.

All of the tracks on those 2 albums are great. Even though, I do prefer the title track to Xanadu

Me too. But I love listening to Xanadu. Speaking of A Farewell to Kings I bought the Different Stages 3 CD set from Rush, and my favorite CD on that is the 3rd one because it is a recording from 1978 of basically all A Farewell to King tracks. They sound amazing live. Especially Xanadu and Cygnus X-1.

^Just a little joke
Art Rock's my second fav sub genre after prog metal. Probably ties with symphonic
Rush, King Crimson, and Van Der Graaf Generator are about as close to metal as you can get. Red, Hemispheres, and Pawn Hearts can out heavy 75% of 80s metal.
Haven't heard Gentle Giant yet, but I'm going to get Octopus and In a Glass House soon

I have yet to hear In A Glass House, but I already enjoy Acquiring the Taste and Octopus.
GG has been one of my recent discoveries, and I really like them very much  |

though i like the concept of "art rock", looking over ther genre's homepage here i find that i'm actually very little acquainted with it. seems like for me art rock means KC - and indeed they fit the definition perfectly: highly progressive though not symphonic or psychedelic rock, with a path with many turns but no "ups and downs", just excellent work. most of the other highlights are totally unknown to me yet: VDGG, Gentle Giant, Supertramp, Mars Volta, Bubu, Dredg, Manfred Mann, etc. Looking over the list, most of the bands' names are new to me. Radiohead i knew from my teenage as an alternative rock band - but maybe that's because i didn't listen to anything from them since "OK Computer". Roger Waters is another of the few art rock acts that i know and appreciate. and, finally, it's Rush that i'm trying to get into at the moment - though not with great succes. but, thinking of the half a year that took me to get into Genesis, i'm rather optimistic.

Maybe Fly By Night would be a good album to start with for Rush? It still has some hard rock elements but there is some prog elements as well. I think it is a good starter album for Rush, but that is just my opinion.

But if you like the Fly By Night style, you're not going to find anything else by them with the same style. They lost their hard rock style pretty quick I think.

That is true. Maybe the live album All The World's A Stage would be better because it has a lot of prog and some hard rock in it.
