![]() ![]() This is so true, though many religious people get offended at this argument. Two main purposes of religion were to organize people and give them ultimate fear of a supreme being to keep them in order, and second - to have a God to complain to and to blame for their mistakes and misfortunes, as well is to ask for stuff. "If I am good and never sin I will go to heaven" - the most powerful way to prevent a person from doing anything out of line! I am responsible enough to blame myself for crap that happens to me and instead of going to church and praying for something, I actually do something to get it. That's why I'm an atheist. Everyone must read The Gadfly by E. L. Voynich, it caused me to become an atheist 6 years ago. More like triggered, I was already coming to my senses around that time ![]() |

I don't believe atheism really exists - religion is ingrained in all of us from primeval times similar to fear of the dark and violence, we ALL believe in a God of some description, though not necessarily the ones presented before us by our elders and betters.
Theorising is a waste of time, only those of you who have been in a real life-or-death situation are truly qualified to say if you are or not a true atheist, as a situation like this will bring the strongest, bravest men to their knees praying to God - how many of you have been scared, I mean really scared for your life, like lying bleeding to death, drowning or someone with a gun pointed at your head? Then your faith, or lack of it, will be truly tested! BTW Happy new year! ![]() Edited by mystic fred - December 29 2006 at 04:57 |

A totally wrong view of Christianity. Most religions in the world rely too much on human willpower saying if you want to be good don't sin. That is impossible. Everybody sins, EVERYBODY (except Jesus - he being the son of God and all that jazz). Even the apostles who knew Jesus even struggled with sin. The bible recognises this and that is why Jesus is such a great savior. We can be assured that are actions have been forgiven by God and we can go to heaven. But that doesn't nullify the consequences. A murderer can become a Christian but they still need to be punished for what they did. And about the praying for stuff and it doesn't happen that is an esy answer. "You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives that you may spend what you get on your pleasures." (James 4:2-3). People pray for stuff and don't get it because they are acting selfish and will not acknowledge God. Hey you want to hear an interesting story? My dad (when we werer in the process of moving and had no income) wanted an iPod so he could listen to sermons from past preachers. So he prayed about because he did not want to spend money on it but would have liked one for the reason mentioned above. A few hours later, my dad's friend (who lived 700 miles away) called him up and asked if he had an ipod because he had been given 4 30 GB ipods with 4 days worth of sermons from great pastors. SO he gave one to my dad. Edited by progismylife - December 29 2006 at 16:12 |

I edited my post. Happy? Jeez can't a Christian make a mistake without all these atheists pointing it out?

If i was a theist, i'd stun you atheists with a bit of the cosmological argument, then wound you and incapacitate you with the argument for design, then blast you all away with the ontological argument.

If this is what you think religion is, then you have shallow opinions indeed. In your defense, you definitely should be atheists if you believe this nonsense. For religious belief is based not only on faith but on reason also. As far as reading, consider Confessions by St. Augustine and Summa Theologica by St. Thomas Aquinas if you are really interested in understanding Christianity. These works should adequately demonstrate the reason required for religious belief. I'm willing to bet theirs are minds far greater than Voynich. These are works of religious scholasticism that have survived since the 5th and 13th centuries. Will we be able to say this about Voynich in 700 years? Time will tell.

Well duh, everyone does sin but they feel guilty about it and try to do as little about as possible and then try to get their little sing forgiven. They know the punishment is waiting. They're afraid of the ultimate law - you can get away from cops but you will be punished by God after death: the most powerful control factor ever invented! ![]()
It gives people hope, and that's the point. Also when they do something wrong they can say God punished them so they let it go easier. It also gives them hope for better future: "God is with me" - the most powerful comforting factor ever. That's a nice story but sorry it's a coincidence ![]() |

It's a coincidence that someone gave my dad's friend 4 30GB iPods for free (when they were around $200-300 a piece) with the the exact thing my dad asked for and that friend in turn called my dad (hadn't talked in a year or so) and gave him one?!?! Besides "coincedences" don't exist, they come from God. Coincedence suggests that stuff happens at random and God is not in total control of all he created. |
