I have just stumbled upon another site where someone going by the user name of ZoolanderHotept has plagiarised some of my reviews, for example:

Plagiarised review of Brain Salad Surgery

I am NOT amused - I think it is a damn cheek for someone to copy someone else's work and pass it off as their own.

Has this happened to anyone else who reviews on Prog Archives?

No, as long as I remember the only case was when someone copied Rico's review, but they gae him credit.

I think you should email them(not the plagiarizing author but the site admins)

3 of 3 thought this review was well written

One of my reviews was used without permission, but at leats they mentioned the original source and my name, so i saw that as a compliment.

That ain't right.  Then he has the gall in the comments to reply to someone else's critique of his review

Critique of the review
Good review, you should include a paragraph about ELP's overall sound, as I don't really understand what they sound like from just this. Finally someone submitted an ELP review to follow up my Love Beach review, their defining moment This is my favourite ELP album, but I find the band to be a bit too prentious and pompous.

his comments to the critique:
I did have an introduction paragraph which described the overall sound, but the review turned out to lengthy so I had to cut some bits out. Im currently trying to write as many prog review as I can in an atempt to fill this site's lackluster collection.

Yes, I tried, but e-mails to the site Admins have been disabled and the only way to contact them would be to register as a user, which I do not want to do if at all possible.

What really annoys me is that this ZoolanderHotept guy has written "Fitzcarraldo aka ZoolanderHotept" as if he and I are one and the same person. He's also submitted reviews of albums that I have not reviewed. Perhaps he copied those reviews from other people too. In any case, I don't want people thinking the other reviews were written by me.

Believe me, I don't feel flattered at all. What a lowlife. The guy is just a lazy cheat.

I managed to find an e-mail address for the Admins of the site hosting the plagiariser, and sent the e-mail copied below. The guy ripped off twelve of my reviews. As he has reviewed several albums that I have not reviewed, it might be worth reviewers on Prog Archives checking that he -- or other members of that site -- have not ripped off your reviews too.

Dear Webmaster,

I have just discovered that someone going by the user name of ZoolanderHotept on your Website has plagiarised several reviews that I posted a couple of years ago on the Prog Archives Web site. According to your Website, this ZoolanderHotept is a student named Jon from Forth Worth, Texas.

Whoever this person is, he had the cheek to write "Fitzcarraldo aka ZoolanderHotept" at the end of some (but not all) of the reviews he copied, as if he is the same person who posted the reviews on Prog Archives. I can assure you that I am not ZoolanderHotept and would kindly request you to remove the reviews from your site that he has copied without my permission. Listed below are the URLs on your site of the reviews that he has plagiarised, along with the URLs of my dated reviews on the Prog Archives Web site.

You can clearly see that this person has copied my reviews.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

A few months ago I Googled my name and noticed the same activity as Fitzcarraldo discovered, at least 3 commercial sites (unknown to me) were using my Prog Archives reviews. If I have more time, I will check out this and mention these sites. In fact it's illegal use for commercial benefits Angry ..!

Well ..... not plagiarism, but the unauthorised use of our reviews is widespread amongst the music blogging community .... sometimes they are explicitly credited to the author, other times they are credited simply to "a ProgArchives review" [or similar phrase] .... this also applies to reviewers from other sites [eg seaoftranquility, progressiveworld etc] .... not sure there is anything we can do to stop it

So far I have not noticed that someone copied my reviews from PA, but I did notice that many of my bio and discographies that I wrote for PA appeared on other web sites... notably on a French site called Amarokprog... My feeling is mixed, I am sort of happy that the correct info on certain artists is spread across the net, but... I don't know.

I am so cross with this thief ZoolanderHotept. Look at this exchange of messages on his review page for ELP Works Vol. II on that site:

AlienEater wrote: "how have managed to do so many good elp reviews so quickly?"

ZoolanderHotept wrote: "I didn't write these all this week. I wrote some of them afew weeks ago when my internet connection was down and started posting them as soon as it came back up. The others I had yet to post here but decided to do so when I saw there was only 1 ELP review."

The guy is a liar as well as a thief.

I have not received a reply from the sputnikmusic Web site's Admins to the e-mail I sent complaining, but it is the Festive Season. Perhaps they will reply in a few days.

In any case, I am so annoyed that I registered with the site and posted a comment on each of the 12 reviews of his that I found had ripped of my reviews. Here is what I wrote for ELP - Works Vol. II, for example:

This review was plagiarised from my November 2004 review of Works Vol. II on the Prog Archives Website. I am not ZoolanderHotept, despite him writing "Fitzcarraldo aka Zoolanderhotept" above. I did NOT give him permission to copy my review. And he even had the cheek to claim he wrote them "a few weeks ago when my internet connection was down". He is a fraud. I see he has also plagiarised 11 other reviews of mine.

Fitzcarraldo

Watch you reviews, guys! This thief will rip off your reviews too and claim that he wrote them.

I just hope that the sputnikmusic site does not have anymore thieves for reviewers.

well i guess we have to wait for ivan's advice on this copyright issue... because i guess in the case of commercial oriented usage of noncredited material legal action could be fruitful.

Sorry to bang on about this, guys, but I have just seen that the punk has plagiarised the review of GENESIS - Foxtrot on Prog Archives by salmacis.

I have not checked the other ZoolanderHotept reviews to see who he has stolen them from, but it could be from other Prog Archives reviews.

I found a couple of mine used in other sites

http://jrfg.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_jrfg_archive.html (Alsop a couple more of PA members as Australian and Muzikman but at least all credited and with a link to PZ)

www.demonoid.com/files/details/566147/5426554/ - 24k (I can't even read it because it's  aclosed site by invitation but it's in Google)

http://www.cybersmusic.com/cybersearch.php?a=25%20Baroque%20Favorites (About Hamburger Concerto linking it to Prog Archives)

BTW: Nothing vcan be done being that Prog Archives doesn't own the reviews and the owners have not copyrighted, still you can ask for the removal.

Funny, I just found this on the website of The Gift:

"Hi one and all We are now on Prog Archives; the biggest progressive resource in the world, and have been given a great review by Erik Neuteboom, one of their most prolific reviewers. He is an advocate.."  LOLLOL

To be serious:

This is the harvest of only a few minutes searching with Google, all these site are using my reviews without my knowledge. And I presume that a lot more sites are doing the same. On one hand it is a bit of an ego-gratification Approve but on the other hand it is a very cheap way to earn money Angry !

i dont think in Fitz's case he would want to remove that, considering that he acknowledge it as his own work...

Erik, Iván,

If the sites you quoted are crediting you and/or Prog Archives then I would not classify that as plagiarism, since they are acknowledging that they are not the originators of the reviews.

The reason I am so hopping mad about this ZoolanderHotept kid is that he has just copied my reviews and passed them off as his own. This is pure plagiarism, pure theft of somebody else's review. I just cannot understand how someone can be so shallow and childish as to do that. To actually claim on that site that he wrote them himself beggars belief. I notice that he even copied a spelling mistake I made and later corrected.
