More news is filtering through about the as yet un-named new Porcupine Tree album.

Dutch International Rock and Metalmagazine AARDSCHOK(issue january 2007)has an interview with Steve Wilson about Porcupine Tree and Blackfield's new album releases.
Apparently the new PT album will contain 6 songs and be 55 minutes long. The already legendary track nicknamed by Steve as "The Beast" will come in at almost 20 minutes long and apparently the album will be an epic of unprecedented (for PT) structure and cohesion - dealing with the 'Blank Generation' that grew up with MTV, CD's, reality shows etc etc. Word has it that the album could be inspired by one of Brett Easton Ellis' novels.

Sounds tremendous.

"The Beast" sounded great in concert as did his other new tracks.  The releases for 2007 are going to be some of the best.

I wonder if it's the same 6 tracks they played live, or if they switched a few.

more again, Steven Wilson surpreends. When everyone thought he would try the deserved mainstream by signing to roadrunner, he goes to make precicely the opposite... many fans who listened to their most recent shows, which included several songs from the new album, say that it will be the best PT record. I'm thrilled, can not wait to see it...

Sounds like a concept album ... that would be a first for them, apart from Voyage 34 (which is rather a jam session).Big smile

The lyrics he sang sounded pretty conceptual, and it's what I thought it was about...and I heard all of this and The Sound of Muzak, all in Nokia Theater, which is right under TRL headquarters.....I love ironyBig smile

After hearing The Beast (which then came to 17mins) in October, I'm beyond excited for the release of this album.  And a concept album has me even more excited!!

Honestly, call me the naysayer of the pack here...but I wasn't all that impressed with the new material when I heard it live...even the long track...I thought the build-up was boring as hell and the rest just standard PT...it'll probably grow on me hopefully, but I couldn't help thinking when I was at the show that aside from one of the new songs (tricky time sigs. and a blistering solo from SW) that they had a major clunker on their hands.  Even some of the lyrics had me wincing a little bit, "let's get together?"...  Here's hoping the album's not 6 songs long, due to that being the amount of songs they PLAYED live...but it'll probably be good.

I've also been on the fence w/r/t Bret Easton Ellis too...I enjoyed the cinematic equivalents to his books, although I still have yet to read him.

So now those MTV kids who were lucky enough to come across Porcupine Tree (Yes they exist) will hear perhaps some even further out of the ordinary music.

Initially, on paper (so far), Wilson's idea sounds great!

I always thought that both In Absentia and Deadwing were sort of concept albums, based upon stories and ideas that related all the songs together... at least, this is from what I've read a lot about the albums and what other people's opinions have been about lyrical analysis of each album. Deadwing is more of a story-concept because isn't Wilson trying to make it into a movie? And In Absentia is a bit more loose in terms of connecting the lyrics together. Read the album pages for the respective albums on the Wiki for the band, as that's where I read most of what made me believe each album was a concept.

Looking forward to the next round of news on the PT album - thanks Tony for the update. The 2007 album release can't come soon enough!

Are you sure they played 6 new songs last tour? I only remember 4 @ the HOB's in Hollywood. I thought Steven Wilson said that they weren't playing several other new songs for this tour?

Yep, it was definitely 6 at Nokia.

I am very curious to hear what Alex Lifeson's and Robert Fripp's contributions will be. I hope it's more than just one song. These two, along with Steve, are very different guitarists, so it could be very interesting. I wonder why David Gilmore has never been involved with PT, since there appears to be such a Pink Floyd influence in much of their music.

Can't wait to hear the album. I actually expected some of the last concerts to appear on the bootleg sites, but it seems everyone took seriously the warning not to tape or at least distribute the stuff. That is what I call fair play :)
