Once you'll be in Italy, it will be easy to find Parsifal.Smile In almost any music shop there is a huge collection of I Pooh. Glad to know you like italian prog. Have you also listened to something new as La Maschera di Cera, Finisterre, Mangala Vallis et cetera?

No, no...I wish I could sample much of it, though. The only album I own, I'm afraid, is 'Io Sono Nato Libero', but I love it and will be getting 'Darwin'. Banco's productions are some of the finest-sounding I've ever heard.

Maybe also "Un Po' del Nostro Tempo Migliore" (1975):

Thanks Andrea, sounds like music I will love.

I am not going to give anything too descriptive today, but I will mention this.
A few months ago, in the begining of 2006 I happened to cross by this bands called The (Ec) Nudes. I heard several samples and liked the sound which reminded me a bit of something else I heard before.
I dug up some details and found that in this group were Chris Cutler (yes yes the man himself on drums, radio and electrics whatever that means), Amy Denio (bass, alto sax, accordion and vocals) and Wadi Gysl (guitars).
Now, since Chris was here, I went to his website and learned more about this group and their background. And I learned that Amy Denio is an accomplished musician which I should look more into her other projects (one of which I just ordered on Wayside, called The Danubians).

Here is what Chris says about the band in his website:
I had been in touch with Amy for along time before we met. She was working for the Musak corporation then and Recommended distributed her first LP.

1992 found me touring with Wadi Gysi and Hans Reichel - shortly after they had both toured with Amy- and a little later, while Wadi and I were doing a series of duo performances, the two of us began discussing the idea of a more organised group playing written rather than improvised music. Amy's was the first name to came up. So we called her and that was the beginning of The (ec) Nudes. I wrote a number of texts, which I sent both parties, then we met, rehearsed, toured and made our first CD, The Vanishing Point, in a single sweep. The Nudes was a straight-ahead band project: basic composition by individuals, collective arrangements and plenty of space for extemporisation. We recorded in France and Switzerland (with Bill Gilonis engineering). But, once we had the songs to tape, I had a strong intimation that mixing would be problematical. Although I had never relinquished hands-on participation in mixing before, on this occasion I suggested we hand the whole project to new ears in order to give the material its best shot. I had known Bob Drake for many years, both as an engineer and a musician (Thinking Plague, Hail). And I had worked with him too, in the touring version of Hail. So, I suggested he mix the CD alone. The group sent the masters to LA; Bob sent a coherent album back. And, for future tours, since Amy was somewhat over-demanded - being bassist, saxophonist, accordionist and singer - we invited Bob to join us. This quartet toured all over Europe and visited Brasil, but never recorded. Fitting schedules together was becoming increasingly difficult, and in light of various other internal complications, I decided in 1994 to leave. Amy and Wadi continued as The Pale Nudes, taking on a new bass-player and drummer.

WHAT'S IN A NAME-
THE NUDES because I thought it would be funny, look great on posters and be nice to live with. But at the last moment it had to become the (ec) NUDES (which is funnier, luckily) since it turned out that there was already a folk group in New York called The Nudes, and we didn't want to tread on their toes (them being nude and all).

ON RECORD:

THE VANISHING POINT (1994) ReR N1CD

Pochakaite Malko

Japanese outfit with ties to other bands (Koenjihyakkei), they are experimental, on the weird side of things, but not too far as to make it unlisteneable, on the contrary.
Blending sounds from variuos styles, they create a intriguing and eclectic music.

Let me give you snippets form around the web:

The debut album from 2002 by this band was one of the big, pleasant surprises of that year. Since that time, the band has changed in that one of the two keyboardists left the band and was replaced by violinist Akishisa Tsuboy of KBB and others excellent Japanese project. This has changed the sound of the band alot. There are still echoes of the "Keith Emerson meets Happy Family" sound of the debut, but there is a lot of other influences too, including a middle eastern vibe at times. This CD even includes a QuickTime video of one of the aforementioned middle eastern influenced tunes which includes the band playing and a bunch of attractive Japanese girls doing a belly dance! So...another very, very good one from these guys. [Tutinoko]

An extremely good debut album by a quartet from Japan of dual keyboardists, bass & drums. The bassist previously played in 100 Sights of Koenji, & one of the keyboardists plays in Ghost. Additionally, the band backed Lars Hollmer on his 2001 Tokyo tour, playing Samlas tunes! They are obviously a Zeuhl band, as the rhythm section is firmly in that vein, but the lead keyboards tend to be Hammond organ or piano, & they have a Keith Emerson at his early Hammond best kinda sound. So, if you could imagine enjoying Keith playing at his best on top of the Happy Family rhythm section, this could be for you! The recording is kinda low budget, but even the sound of it eventually grew on me & I felt like it fit the music. A very, very good one.

Pochakaite Malko: Pochakaite Malko

There has been a recent trend in Japanese prog these last few years to create strong ELP inspired, keyboard-led bombastic rock. As with fellow bands Ars Nova and Gerard, Pochakaite Malko have gone that same route, and with a two keyboard attack and furious rhythm section have created a stellar debit.

The stars of the show here are Kazuo Ogino and Tomohiro Ueno, who lay down molten torrents of Hammond, piano, and synthesizer blasts while bassist Shigekazu Kuwahara and drummer Junzo Tateiwa keep up the complex beat. This CD has two flavors to it, one being the ominous, dark feeling as on tracks like "Funeral" and "Holy Mountain", both of which remind me of the classic Italian band Goblin. Then there are the more upbeat and symphonic sounds of "Trinity" and "5th Element." The latter features the albums only vocal section, whispered quite nicely by female singer Keiku. While sometimes keyboard dominated albums can get a bit monotonous, the use of varied instruments like Mellotron, piano, synth, and Hammond, along with memorable tunes kept this one very listenable.

Along with the some of the other standouts in the Japanese prog scene like Kenso, Ars Nova, Gerard and Side Steps, Pochakaite Malko has made it to contender status with this fine release. ELP fans especially will dig this big time!
Reviewer: Pete Pardo

There was something about this I couldn't put my finger on until my boss came in just now and said, "What is this, Tarkus on 45?" Throw in a zeuhl schooling and a pinch of wasabe and you get the idea. In the vein of Happy Family, Pochakaite Malko blast out instrumental keyboard laden prog, only with much more of a classical undertone (an homage to their namesake), and all of the drama that entails. Comparisons to Keith Emerson abound, and the keyboard work here deserves it, albeit from four hands rather than two. At moments, they Tipographically mimic the vibes of 70's & '80's Zappa; other moments tricked me into thinking there was an actual flute; many moments lapse into stretches of synthesized mayhem.
The rhythm section doesn't necessarily take a back seat, though. The drums carry each change and shift with almost unnoticable ease, often demonstrating great cymbal work. However, it was actually the bass that originally got me hooked on this CD. That's where the Magma worship comes in. Totally distorted, thick and heavy, with lots of repetitious slides. The first track makes use of synthesized choral chanting, which adds to the zeuhlery and makes Kuwuhara all the more Jannick Top-heavy. Not surprising, as Kuwuhara was the original bassist for Koenjihyakkei, Tatsuya Yoshida's zeuhl powerhouse. His tricks aren't limited to that style or sound, though, and he drops into the mix as the CD progresses, calling attention to himself here and there, but supporting the synths for the most part.

If you're not familiar with the cacophonic musicianship of other modern Japanese progressive bands, this CD may prove to be overwhelming. Even as a fan, my first listen to this found it so dense I almost couldn't make sense of it at all. The quieter moments (like tracks 4 & 7) are like an aural sorbet, lending contrast to the thick and savory stew. Its an aquired taste even for those with an aquired taste, but tasty nonetheless.

Jody told me the other day about this band he really liked called Exsimio, and I told him I agree with his enthusiasm abou the band. Each of us heard a different album by this Chilean band; Jody heard the s/t from 1999 and I heard Carbono 14 from 2005.

Let me quote the bio here which is actually written by the band's guitarist, Claudio Corcione:

EXSIMIO, is a band from Chile formed in 1995 by Carlos Perez (bass guitar), Claudio Corcione (guitar), Juan Ignacio ¨Iñaki¨ Varela (guitar) and Fernando Jaramillo (drums). The band records their first Ep with 4 songs live recorded. It was a limited edition and mainly for broadcasting.

In january 1999, the band starts to record their first Lp. An independent production with 11 songs and named “Exsimio”. The recording and mixing was financed by the band and the fonds for the mastering and the edition of copies were given by FONDART - Fonds For The Development Of Chilian Arts And Culture. FONDART is only given to a few amount of projects, and the selection is made by a specialized committee. This important goal was made by EXSIMIO with a main purpose: to project the band in the national and international market.

In november 1999, EXSIMIO is invited to L.A. -California to play at the opening of the Julie Rico Art Galery. The band gave interviews to La Opinion, the most important latin newspaper in U.S.A, Al Borde Magazine, and TU MUSICA, music tv program at channel 54 where the video clip of the song Cigoto - the band first single- was presented. Back in Chile, ESIMIO presented their first album live. The Lp started to be distributed by Musicland label through Chile and Argentina, and recieves excellent critics by the specialized press. This same year the band creates their own web site, www.exsimio.cl.

In October, the band receives a call from Mexico, telling that EXSIMIO will be part of the 5th version Of the BajaProg Fest – one of the most important progressive music festival around the world.. EXSIMIO would be in representation of Chile, togheter with bands from France, Germany, U.S.A., Spain, Poland, Indonesia, Hungry and Mexico. The band went to the festival recieving flathering words from the local press and putting EXSIMIO within the 5 best bands of the festival. The band also recieved an invitation to play in Chihuahua with the italian band FINISTERRE. Later the band would go to the University Of Baja California to play with a local band called ARIA. The presence of EXSIMIO in Mexico, would open the door so that two new chilean bands would be invited to the festival in the year 2002.

Back in chile EXSIMIO appeared in the press as “The new conquerors Of Mexico” (Rockaxis Magazine and web site), the band also played for a live recording on Radio Futuro in the studio of the radiostation, and later was invited to play at the Celebration concert of the 12th Aniversary of the station, next to other national bands and in front of thousands of people. During this period EXSIMIO appears in important foreing magazines such as Acid Dragon - France, Margen - Spain, Progressive Newsleter - Germany and Nobody’s Land - Italy, among others, and in a lot of web sites specialized in progressive rock music. Likewise EXSIMIO is distributed by Mylodon Records-Chile, Cuneiform Records-U.S.A., Musea Records-France, Lizard-Italy and Record Runner-Brazil.

In march 2002 EXSIMIO is awarded as the Best Chilean VANGUARD Band by the specialized music magazine and web site Rockaxis. On the same month, the band recieves an invitation to participate at the second version of Bahia Prog festival, rock festival that takes place in Cadiz – Spain. In july 2001, EXSIMIO receives Us$ 5.000. From the goverment of chile in order that the band could go to the festival in Spain and also to do an European tour on november 2002, including Italy, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Germany and finishing on Spain.

Before going on Tour the band performs at the Second Vanguard Festival on the Municipe Theater of Valparaiso – Chile, and in an Alive Transmision Concert for the University of Chile Radio Station program: Chile Musica en Vivo. Back in Chile the band opens a Concert for the Mythic Italian Band Il BALLETTO DI BRONZO that was touring on Chile and also played together with the famous bass player Jorge Campos (CONGRESO, FULANO) and his drum & bass project Machi.

In December 2005 the band starts to record their second LP called “Carbono 14” financed again by the Chilian goverment FONDART. and distributed in Europe by Musea Records.

The End.... ¿or the beginning?

Since I heard only Carbono 14 I will recommend that one and give you 2 reviews made here by Cesaar Inca and John Davie (Sinkadotenree):

EXSIMIO — Carbono 14

Review by Cesar Inca (César Inca Mendoza Loyola)
SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Symphonic Prog Specialist

4 stars Equaling the magic and surpassing the power of their namesake debut album, Exsimio’s “Carbono-14” was one of the most exciting prog releases in 2005, either regarding the South American continent or the worldwide spectrum. The band’s line of work is pretty much the same, albeit with a harder edge provided by the enhanced input of the dual guitar riffs and counterpoints. That means that the rhythm section feels obliged to tighten up their amalgam in order to keep up with the ensemble’s overall pace, and sure they manage to do so successfully. Once again, bassist Pérez does a terrific job at complementing his rhythm duties with services as a “third guitarist” in some of the counterpoints that take place. The combative nature of the three tracks with lyrics focuses on social violence (‘El Juicio II’), abuse of political-economical power (‘Haploide’) and the environmental deflagration (‘2012’), which add rebellion to the anger spread all through the instrumentation. The cover image is quite significant: excavation tools, craniums and archeological ruins, all of them seem to symbolize the band’s intention to analyze the roots of modern’s society self-destruction. ‘Ser en el Ensueño’ kicks off the album as a subtle overture that partially announces the display of strength to be immediately developed in ‘C- 14’ and ‘Amenaza’. These two numbers solidly portray complex structures in which the stronger elements get fluidly combined with other constrained passages – ‘Amenaza’ includes some of the best guitar leads of the album. The aura of restlessness and anger feels like a cloud floating heavily in the air as the album goes on. This sensation of emotional turmoil is taken to a rather hostile level in ‘Haploide’ and ‘El Trauko’, two segued pieces that display a most powerful unit, as well as in the oppressive, gray atmospheres of ‘Esquizofrenia’. Also notable are the martial, obsessive cadence of ‘Eugenesia’ and the clever use of decreasing nuances in the closure ‘2012’. These are really specific examples of the album’s appeal, which can only be enjoyed as a sequenced whole of ballsy prog numbers. Definitely, with this amazing sophomore album, Exsimio reaffirm themselves as a proficient item of current Crimson-inspired prog: “Carbono 14” is exciting and inventive, in a word, excellent

EXSIMIO — Carbono 14

Review by sinkadotentree (john davie)

4 stars EXSIMIO are an instrumental band from Chile.Comprised of a drummer, base player and two guitarists. No keyboards. The base player stands out from the other musicians,he's the star and leader of this band. You have to check out his solo on "amenaza"probably the standout song along with "c-14" where the drum, guitar interplay is amazing. They all shine bright on this song."Sentencia"is a short song that starts out ominously with base and drums leading the way.In "el juicio II" the base playing again steals the show. There is also some Spanish speaking going on.(no idea what he's saying).Another highlight is "fragmento"some complex guitar work and the base playing is so clear,a credit to the excellent production of this album."Haploide"has spanish words ,again spoken by the base player.(i still have no idea what he is saying). This is highly recommended! If you like GUAPO or heavy KING CRIMSON style music, this is for you.

To be discovered!

I'd like to recommend a great Polish jazz-rock band Laboratorium. They were said to have been the best jazz-rock ensemble behind the Iron Curtain. They released Anthology 1971 - 1988 this year - a 10 CD boxset containing everything they had ever recorded:

Highly recommended (limited edition to 1000 copies, so better hurry)!

I apologize for the long time with no rec's, but I will resume this next week.

For the time being here is another Israeli new band called Musica Ficta:
www.myspace.com/mficta

Very 70's art-rock influenced, but still nicely done.

Musica Ficta was founded at 2003 by Udi Horev in Jerusalem. During that year the personal of the band went through a few stages, until it became an organized group. During this period of time the musical material also took shape, and in time came to be the band’s debut album - “Child and a Well”. The band’s debut concert took place at the “Swedish chef” club in Jerusalem at November 2003 and since then the band had performed regularly throughout Israel at leading music clubs such as: “Barbie” in Tel Aviv, “Baraka” in Beer-Sheva, “Stanga” in Jerusalem and many more. The band’s debut album (“Child and a Well”) was recorded during 2005 by the sound engineer Gil Stein (also, the keyboard player and composer of progrock band- “Trespass”). The mix and master are a work of art by the esteem sound engineer and producer Udi Koomran. Shortly after recording the album there was another change in personal and "Musica Ficta" `s fine keyboard player- Yury Tulchinsky, who was one of the founding members of the band, was replaced by another fine keyboard player – Omer Rizi, with whom the band filmed its first video clip on April 2006. The clip was filmed by the great director Tamar Singer. The band members state that they have a strong belief in the group`s musical direction, which is: expending the listener’s limits of imagination and taking him/her to the realms of the unfamiliar, along together with providing songs in a sincere way that anyone can relate to.

MUSICA FICTA is a progressive rock group from Israel, which performs original music composed by guitarist and composer Udi Horev. While listening to the group’s debut album one can easily trace the strong influence of classical music penetrating the world of rock tradition. Further influences are being brought by the six, well experienced musicians, all of whom has come from different styles, such as: jazz, classical, rock and world music. Together they create music full of charm and atmosphere- colorful and varied compositions with a broad musical perspective that combines fiction and reality; prewritten music and “on the spot” improvisation; energetic rock, subtle ballads and a few touches of avant-garde. Within this music come to light the capabilities and uniqueness of each player alongside with challenging group playing, all of these in a wrapping of an easy-to-communicate-with songs, sometimes with a vivid nature and sometimes with a rather melancholic one.

J.A. Caesar's album was reissued on Dec. 20, 2006 !

国境巡礼歌
J.A. Caesar (J.A.シーザー) / Kokkyo Junreika (国境巡礼歌) 1973 [price = 3056 yen]

J.A.Caesar's dark, heavy, gloomy music. It is very Japanesque also it is very different from general European and American darkness. Can you accept this atmosphere ? Anyway this is a legendary important album in Japanese progressive rock scene.

Also no.1 masterpiece by Tenjo Sajiki, Shintokumaru (身毒丸) was reissued on the same day.

Shintokumaru

Tenjo Sajiki (天井桟敷) / Shintokumaru (身毒丸) 1978 [price = 3056 yen]

This is a live recording of this play Shintokumaru. But you may be astonished by music. One of the best gems in 70s Japanese scene.

By the way, this price is too expensive. DeadDead
I already own both albums, but if I wish to buy soon without any good reviews, I can't buy them. Because J.A. Caesar is merely a musician/composer/director of a play party. I must not think he can produce such great music. The price will harm me ...
However fortunately I own them. If you can accept Magma, Chene Noir, Carmina Burana, rock opera etc, you can enjoy them especially Shintokumaru.

I recommend listening to great master bass player Jorge Campos. He was composer and bassist for Chilean avant garde Fulano and now is dedicated only to his solo career.
Check out his music

there is bass solos and mp3 from his Jorge Campos Quartet live.
Cheers!
