your codec packages (for decoding sound and image) might be old. try ffdshow, you can download it here - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/ffdshow.cfm

then try your dvd and tell us if there's any difference.

Brand New PC! Just tried a few DVDs and they WORKED, but others dont...my Gentle Giant out of the box DVD, Strawbs live in Tokyo 75, and YESSONGS DVD all DONT WORK with sound...but

The Propisition works fine

so does the Genesis DVD 2 disc set critical review.

WHY dont certain ones work? Ive tried everything!

it's not your pc's problem, it's a software issue! sound comes in various formats on dvds: MP3, OGG, AC3, DTS, etc... in order to hear the sound you need to have installed the proper filters that decode the format. your sound card's software and Windows' software is just basic, it only decodes the most common formats... this is what might be the problem. the link i gave you is for you to download a package of audio/video filters.

If you use Videolan Client, it probably will play anything.

The decoder just allows your PC to play the DVD format.

Just install ffdshow and put a DVD in the DVD drive and the rest is super-fantastic easy...

Have you tried this:
on your PC (presumably XP)
start>control panel>
then either:
if you are in "category view" select "sounds, speech and audio devices"

click on "sounds and audio devices" and make sure that "mute" has not been selected.

or if you are in "classic view" select "sound and audio devices" and do the same check as before...

If it's a brand new PC then you should contact the supplier. They should have a support phone line for this sort of thing. I must admit I've had lots of problems with DVD software in the past - some of mine wouldn't play at all.
