Adult Orientated Rock, or soft rock, if you will. Bands like Journey, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon etc. I like some bands of this style (not REO though), but not necessarily prog bands doing that. Many of DT's albums I've come across have some AOR ballad like 'Another Day', 'Through Her Eyes', 'I Walk Beside You' etc. |
Soeey Salmacis butt AOR is Album Orieted Rock.
Defines bands that based their releases in whole albums rather than in hit singles, Prog Rock is one oform of AOR, buyt what we are talking about us the AOR of the late 70's and 80's a conservatie and boring evolution of Rock that despite being mainstream kept releasing in the AOR format.

Yeah, I've heard that term used too as well as 'adult oriented rock'. Same thing really. Whatever it's called, Dream Theater are for sure influenced by it.

Rush or maybe DT (I haven't listened that much to DT). I don't think any one of these two can be considered "great".

Tull. Although I also could have picked GG or Rush, or even KC.

I hate Pink Floyd with a passion... but it's not like they are THAT bad, I just see them as slightly boring. The reason I hate them with such a passion is that herds of people idolize them, and the way I see it, most of them are too blind to see that Pink Floyd are just another "Elevator Music" influenced rock band, with a good vocalist and a good songwriter... They nowhere near the Progressive Giants they are thought to be... I've heard the term " Musical Genius" used in association with Pink Floyd... That makes me SICK! they are just a pretty good band IMO... Nothing more.
But it's not like I don't enjoy some of their material... I like the album Meddle... and I guess they have some other songs that I can stand...
VDGG on the other hand... I never really got into that band... at all... Maybe I should give them a few more listens... but so far, I really don't see anything that I like about VDGG... so I vote VDGG

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret: Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

I just find it so hard to get into Dream Theater, and believe me, I've tried. They have mixed albums and many songs that would be good if they didn't come in at 200 mph with heavy guitar every 30 sec.

Pink Floyd. Easy. I just don't like most of their music. They're like any average band to me. 2 Good albums, rest, boring. yet they're popular.

I think you're forgetting ELP, I would have voted for them anyway. From
this selection I would have to say Gentle Giant or Camel, though I love
Three Friends and The Snow Goose.

I voted King Krimson.
Excepting "ITCOTCK" (which featured the boring and looooooooong "Moonchild" by the way), I never could enter into their work (and I tried hardly) : too noisy, too improv, too jazzy, little feeling, almost no emotion, absolutely no charisma from its leader etc.
So, this is not for me. Actually, I never understood why and how this band was so popular.
But as I often say, it is not possible to love all the bands reviewed on this great site.
Cheers.

Everybody knows that Dream Theater are above all of these classics (altought I like all of them), so why ignore or hate them...
but it´s a fact that they are the least favourite band from this list here on PA...

DT have surpassed the formative prog bands in your opinion. what name do you review under? I'd like to be able to ignore everything you've written.
