Topic: Do you listen samples before buying? Posted: November 26 2006 at 14:43 |
I'm kind of curious, when you are faced with an artist whose mucis you haven't heard, do you rely in reviews and comments or do you actually download a sample of his muci to buy it?
I usually don't. That's why I have quite a few awful cd's in my collection. But I just don't like listening to anything "in pieces".... I prefer to read a comment, read a few more, buy the cd, listen to it, and then agree or not with the review.
You?

I always try to hear the whole album before buying it. There are some exceptions though.

None of the above, I choose 'sometimes'.

Ditto Mr Barla (previous post). I listen to soundfiles if at all possible. This is becoming increasingly more common, due to most bands having soundfiles on their websites. Up until a year or two ago it would be very rare for me to hear anything of an album prior to purchase. Most of my record collection has been obtained by the fingers crossed method.

Never. If I listen to samples I won't be completely surprised.

Sometimes I do and sometimes I just take a risk. In most cases, taking the risk has been more rewarding....kinda like diving into the unknown.

Same here. I do research the albums a lot, but I listen to the sample, but I also take risks. A great example of taking a risk blindly (or should I say deaf) for me is my recent purchase of Lift Your Skinny Fists... by GYBE!. I had never heard a sample by them, but it's now one of my favorite all-time albums, let alone one of my favorite post-rock albums.

I'll listen to samples now and again. Sometimes it'll influence my purchase, and sometimes not. After hearing some of the upcoming Pain Of Salvation, I may hold off a bit. Anti-American sentiments aside, it just doesn't sound as interesting as The Perfect Element or Remedy Lane.

I always listen to samples to hear what I may or may not spend money on.
As far as reviews go, everyone has different musical tastes so one person's gold is another person's cheese. I have had this happen numerous times when reading a review that praises the album to high heaven but when I listen to samples I'm, like, you've got to be kidding.
Sometimes the vibe I get concerning a group is correct and I listen to samples and I buy the albums (Pure Reason Revolution, Taal).
Other times it isn't and I listen to samples and I don't buy the albums (Hawkwind, Glass Hammer).

I download, thank you for asking though! I think music should be for free and I don't think these bands need more money than they already have. |
What the heck is this - music should be for free? The music they create is theirs to sale and profit from. A record company is to be rewarded for their work as well. Granted, the band should get more than they do and the record company less but that is between the band and record company. As for you - you are a thief! And another thing - who are you to say that they already have enough?

BTW - I listen to samples on occasion - especially if it is a band that I have never heard of.

I sometimes do, usually a strong reccomendation alone is enough to get me buy an album though.

I am going to re-open this thread. The topic is not about illegal downloading, but if you listen or download samples before buying music. Most artists have a website where you can dl free full tracks or samples,or have a myspace page where you can listen to their tunes.
Please stay on topic,we do not need a discussion about the legality of downloading. As long as you are talking about dl'ing legal samples, fine.

Almost every album that I plan to buy, I sample first by either downloading it or going to sites that give samples. I've bought albums before not sampling them, and a lot of the time I regret it.
