I'm wondering ... with all these "top of 2006" polls/threads, how many albums have you even listened to (only releases of 2006, no re-releases/re-issues)?

I have listened to more than 50 ... and I rated about 40. In December I'll try to listen to and rate about 40 more albums of 2006.

The point is: 2006 has been (and still is) a good year for prog ... many, many awesome releases. Smile

Four (five if you count Muse's new album).

The only 2006 album I heard is DT's Score but I don't vote in the top of 2006 polls.

that's the problem Mike, most of the stuff I have bought this year has been from previous years...

but from the ones I have heard, my fave album of 2006 is certainly Vanden Plas' Christ.0, and I'm not sure it will be beaten, even by those I haven't heard (it spent ALL summer in the car CD player...Embarrassed)
Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I spent most of 2005 listening to the classics from the 70s - I had a lot of catching up to do. In 2006 I tried to focus on new releases ... I have been constantly monitoring them, reading magazines, websites like this one etc.. It's quite interesting ... I would never have thought that there are so many strong albums being released every month. It's really more that I can listen to.Smile

And that is why you keep seeing the same albums being mentioned as the best of 2006.

This is why I don't like those lists too much since many albums are not exposed enough to be taken into account there, like several albums I heard this year and are only mantioned scarcely.

I did not count how many albums of this year I've listened to. Rough estimate is about the same number as you, Mike.
But you must remember, Mike, that not everyone uses the same services as you to listen to music, so the exposure you get is much broader than others.
But it is a valid point you make. Those lists aren't worth much, since it takes many people who listened to differnt albums. There is no full common basis for comparison here.

EDIT - Oh and yes, this year has had very good releases.

^ of course. I didn't mean to imply that people have to listen to that many albums ... that would be quite decadent (although Napster is quite cheap - but it's not available in many countries, and that really sucks). I just wanted to see whether there are other people like me who listen to that many current releases, and overall this thread could simply serve as a reminder for some people that much more interesting music is being released every month than they think.Smile

I find it a bit difficult to separate albums released this year from all other stuff I got to know this year. It would be very interesting to see comprehensive list of 2006 progressive albums, it might happen I heard some good part of them.

@ Mike
Certainly.
I tried to do it in the different Best 2006 threads that kept repeating the same bands and albums. Another esteemed member (who is one of my mentors here) is Honganji who seems to have all this year's releases... He kept posting those lists of albums which only parts of it I knew.

But definitely, members here are encouraged to go and seek those new releases of 2006. I believe they will be pleasantly surprised.

Of the 211 albums I have so far bought this year, 34 were released in 2006, 18 of which are prog.
I don't ever get to listen to new music other than the cds I purchase.
When you look at the figures, I don't get to hear that many new releases ( in the same year of release that is). I'm not sure how this proportion relates to previous years - I only keep account of the totals year-on-year. This might seem somewhat anal but I need to keep records for insurance purposes.

My buys include:

Evergrey - Monday Morning Apocalypse (pretty bad sadly...)
TFK - Paradox Hotel (awesome!!!)
OSI - Free (awesome as well)

Oh yeah. I had forgotten that I actually heard Queensr˙che's Operation: Mindcrime 2. LOL I don't really remember what it sounded like though, so I guess it hardly counts...
