Well of those listed, it's probably Dream Theater. The only album I think is all that great and consistent is 'Scenes From A Memory'. The songwriting obviously came first with that one- ironic that it should be a concept album, then. The others I have of theirs have too many long winded solos for my taste, and too many sub par AOR ballads ('Octavarium' stand up).

Dream Theater definitely. I listen to them occasionally (well, rarely really). Guess I'm still living in the 70's!

I had the same idea for a poll a few days ago, but I thought it was too negative. Nah, it doesn't matter if it's negative. Anyway, I wouldn't have given the option for DT, because we already know that it's one of the most... controversial bands on this site. My vote goes for Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd is yuk for me, although sometimes enjoyable.

I voted KC, because of the ones I know enough of to make a judgement they are the one I like least...I donk really know any GG, and only a couple of VDGG and Camel, but like what I know.....

Dream Theater is the only metal band listed, thus this poll is hopelessly skewed.
They'll be slaughtered like squealing swine by all of us more "traditional-minded" prog fans!
Wheeeeee!
Seriously, this poll seems pretty pointless.
Sorry.

so what? this is a fact of life ...
apparently the topic starter took only those bands listed in the top 100 or whatever in progarchives... what can we do, when DT is the one and only prog metal band in this scope (which actually shows how much overrated it is!)
go, go, go, kill it, slaughter, rip off their heads
if DT wasn't on the list, I believe PF would have assumed its role, or Rush maybe... (don't be distracted by the ratings; ask DT bashers which one would they have prefered in place of it!)

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret: Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

Ah, but people might not have voted if Dream Theater had not been present! (I probably wouldn't have, actually) They are both the current poster boy and the whipping boy of prog!!

I'd have to say King Crimson. Their debut is a PRogressive Rock masterpiece but after that most of their material does little for me.

I have massisve amounts of respect for KC, but their style doesn't always work for me, that's why I voted that way.....BTW Floyd would be my 2nd choice of those listed, they get a but "DOWN" for my taste most of the time, but when I'm in the right mood it is KILLER...lol

Like many others, I don't consider Dream Theater to be one of the true greats of Prog. I don't like them that much, so they got my vote. I'm not too fond of ELP either though.

Why the people keep say that Dream Theater is overrated
is one of the greatest bands ever
by the way, for me is very hard vote in this poll, but i vote for VDGG, because they have much jams without feeling in their songs.

I voted for Floyd as I find them exceedingly dull.
I was tempted to vote for Dream Theatre <<<proper spelling! as a) IMO, they are not a "proper" prog band - not an original note in their repertoire, and, b) All the other bands were at the forefront of the original prog movement.

I'm not really a big fan of progressive metal, at all. I mean, Dream Theater has their moments (Metropolis pts 1 and 2, Some stuff on Images) but I don't care for their style. Sorry, but I have to say this was an easy answer.

...that's the European spelling. It is not the proper spelling. Either way is proper, however the official spelling BY THE BAND is ER, nor RE.

The way I came up with this top 10 list was totally objective, based on the Prog Archives Top Albums list.....I just took the first 10 bands that had at least 2 albums listed, starting with #1. Anyway, my curiosity has been satisfied. It looks like the majority of progheads (including me) do not favor prog metal music over the classic Symphonic/Art Rock/Folk/Psych-Space prog music. A generalization, but a fair one I think. Of the most popular bands listed in the prog archives, Dream Theater is least beloved and it sounds as if ELP would have captured some "tough love" too (I can't stand them either). I can understand some people having a hard time with Rush and VDGG. Actually, the poll went pretty much as I thought it would. Thanks for participating and PROG ON!!!
