You loved it? Well in that case, get Images and Words as soon as
possible! That will be a great eargasm, so much better than FiI (which
does have its moments though).

Scenes From a Memory or A Change of Seasons.
I'm really surprised no one has mentioned ACOS. The first DT album I bought and it's still one of my favourites.

Octavarium is pretty good, but otherwise, they're only so-so.

Images and Words, Awake and A Change of Seasons.
If you get those three albums you'll have all that's essential of Dream Theater. I just can't decide on one of them. If you intend to buy only one, any of these is perfect. Well, in A Change of Seasons you'll find only one original song, the rest are covers, but that one original song is so round and enhancing that it's worth the buy. And the cover versions are among the best you'll hear in your life. If you're looking for a complete original album, then Images and Words or Awake. No mistake.

Now, 2 months later, i own "Images & Words" and "Live At The Maquee". I'm deeply into dream theater and have watched live performances on Internet and DVD. Thanks!

Man, I have zero problem with Falling Into Infinity. A little unsure why it gets hammered all of the time.

Well, there's 'You not Me', co-written by Desmond Childs (you know, that co-writer with Bon Jovi???), there's also 'Hollow Years' ( ) and, worst of all 'Analy'... oops, i mean 'Ana Lee'. Three over cheesy tracks. The rest of the album is great though, I must admit. 'New Millenium', 'Lines in the Sand', 'Hell's Kitchen', 'Under Peruvian Skies' are all DT classics to me. |
I must say that when an album has a play time of more than 60 minutes, a few not so good tracks don't bother me at all - at least if it's not a concept album that "forces" you to listen to these tracks.

It's definitely one of their weaker albums, still, tracks like "New Millennium", "Lines In The Sand" and "Trial of Tears" makes it an necessary listen for fans. Me personally would rate it 4/5, mostly because of those three tracks.

I think it's an amazing album actually, maybe not one to figure in your average top 10 of prog masterpieces, but still wonderful and unique in their discography. There is not one track on it that really bothers me and there are some (those already mentioned as highlights, plus "Take Away My Pain") that I absolutely love.

Exactly what I did!
I like Scenes best, and then Octavarium and I&W are tied. Awake didn't do much for me...

I think I know what you're getting through
I entered DT with I&W and a few months later I had bought their complete discography. Actually, there has been a rather long period of time where I didn't feel any appetite for listening to anything else than DT.
Though, I would say that their first three live albums, from Live at the Marquee to LSFNY , are really dispensable : the first doesn't add much to I&W and the two others are pleagued by LaBrie's failures.
And, of course I have a big problem with the Score's DVD because the voice is obviously and completely out of sync with the images. So, either I have a bad copy, either all the voices have been overdubbed and that should be told by the band ...
